- After Tess is married to Angel Clare, he tells her a 48 hours affair he had once, and she him the dark secret from the unread letter. - Realizing only on the day of her wedding that Angel never saw the letter she wrote to him telling him of her past, she has little choice but to go through with the ceremony. They are both happy and Angel takes rooms for them at D'Urberville manor for a few days before they go off to London. He confesses to once having had a brief love affair and asks for Tess' forgiveness. She gladly does so and feeling the time is right, tells him her own secret. His reaction is not what she had hoped and he leaves, unable to even kiss her goodbye. Tess returns home while Angel leaves for Brazil but she soon finds that life can be very harsh. After working the fields for more than a year she again comes across Alec D'Urberville, now a preacher, who asks her to marry him.—garykmcd
