Starz is bidding farewell to another show.
The Lionsgate-backed premium cable network on Tuesday announced that crime drama Hightown, starring Monica Raymund, will conclude with its third season. Season three of the series from showrunner Rebecca Cutter (Gotham) will debut Friday, Jan. 26, on Starz.
Hightown is the latest series to get the ax at Starz. The cabler recently cleaned house and canceled Blindspotting, Heels and Run the World after two seasons each and dropped The Venery of Samantha Bird with only two episodes left to produce.
The conclusion of Hightown leaves Starz with a roster of originals that includes Black Mafia Family, Outlander, P-Valley, the Power franchise and Shining Vale. Raymund (Chicago Fire) stars alongside James Badge Dale, Riley Voelkel, Amaury Nolasco, Atkins Estimond and Dohn Norwood. ‘Shadow And Bone’, ‘Glamorous’ & ‘Agent Elvis’ Among 5 Series Canceled By Netflix Amid Strike Impact
Exclusive: Netflix will not be going forward with more seasons of live-action series Shadow and Bone and Glamorous and adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar and Captain Fall.
The decision was made a week after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike and a month and a half after the end of the WGA work stoppage as networks and platforms continue to evaluate the impact from the strike-related seven-month production shutdown.
While there had been a slew of series cancellations and un-renewals by linear networks and streamers during and immediately after the strikes, Netflix had largely refrained from making cancellation decisions during the past 6½ months while announcing a number of renewals, including One Piece (S2), Ginny & Georgia (S3 and S4); The Lincoln Lawyer (S3), Xo, Kitty (S2), Heartstopper (S2 and S3), The Night Agent (S2 picked up on the eve of the WGA strike), The Diplomat (S2), Fubar (S2), Sweet Magnolias...

Ava DuVernay’s untitled drama, starring and executive produced by Joshua Jackson and Lauren Ridloff, is not moving forward at Starz, Variety has confirmed.
The series had begun filming in Wilmington, N.C., in March but was paused in May due to the WGA strike. Starz decided not to move forward with the series following DuVernay’s decision to walk away after her overall deal with Warner Bros. TV came to an end in May. Additionally, Starz has been making multiple series changes; in September, the network axed “Heels,” “Run the World” and “Blindspotting.” Plus, “The Venery of Samantha Bird,” which began filming, paused during the WGA strike and is not continuing.
The DuVernay drama, which had received a three-season pickup, reunited Jackson and Ridloff, who co-starred in Broadway’s 2018 rendition of “Child of a Lesser God.”

Starz has officially ordered “The Hunting Wives” to series with eight episodes.
Based on May Cobb’s best-selling novel of the same name, the story follows Sophie O’Neil and her family as they pack up their things and move away from the East Coast and head down south to East Texas where she’s introduced to socialite Margo Banks. Sophie falls prey to Margo’s irresistible charms and soon winds up consumed by obsession, seduction, and murder.
“‘The Hunting Wives’ is a juicy, suspenseful and sultry thrill-ride,” said Kathryn Busby, president of Original Programming for Starz. “We’re excited to continue to work with Rebecca and Erwin on this propulsive series that perfectly complements Starz’s slate of edgy, female-forward premium content.”

There are some big changes at Starz, and it's bad news for four shows.
Variety reported Monday evening that the premium cabler has canceled Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting and is scrapping The Venery of Samantha Bird ahead of its premiere.
Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting lasted for two seasons on the premium cabler, but it seems that the trio didn't have enough interest to sustain additional seasons.
The highest profile of the three shows was Heels, which starred Stephen Amell as Jack Spade, a man who inherited the league from his father.
However, he struggled to keep things running well, leading to plenty of drama across the two seasons.
The cast also included Alexander Ludwig, Chris Bauer, Mary McCormack, Kelli Berglund, Allen Maldonado, and Trey Tucker.
Rounding out the cast were Robby Ramos, Alice Barrett Mitchell, Roxton Garcia, David James Elliott, Joel Murray, and Cm Punk.

Starz has axed three existing drama series and one upcoming project.
The network has binned Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting as well as not moving forward with The Venery of Samantha Bird.
Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting all aired two seasons and The Venery of Samantha Bird paused production in May due to the strikes with two episodes left to film.
Heels revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

With the months-long WGA walkout looking set for imminent resolve, Starz is getting ahead of the inevitable post-strike culling. The network has canceled four original series — including one that had yet to even air.
On the block are wrestling drama Heels, comedy Run the World and dramedy Blindspotting, each of which recently aired its second season. Additionally, drama The Venery of Samantha Bird will not resume production after stopping, mid first season, when the WGA strike began in May.
Dropping four series at once is not a minor move for the cable network. Starz recently announced an end date for longtime hit Outlander, which will leave the channel and its sister streamer largely reliant on the enduring Power spinoffs and a handful of other programs like horror comedy Shining Vale. (Keeping with spin-offs, Starz has also greenlit a 10-episode prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood from the executive producers of the original.

Starz is canceling four of its series, Variety has learned exclusively. Specifically, “Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” will not get new seasons at the cable network, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” Season 1 is being scrapped without airing.
“Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” all recently aired their second season at Starz, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” was in production on its first season. Production was shut down, however, at the onset of the WGA strike. It was reported at the time that only two episodes of the first season were left to shoot.
“The Venery of Samantha Bird” was to star Katherine Langford as the title character. Per the official logline, “Samantha, while visiting family in New England, reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But the couple’s picture-perfect love story isn’t as sweet as it seems on the surface.

Starz announced the cancellation of four of its series, including “Blindspotting,” “Heels,” “Run the World” and “The Venery of Samantha Bird,” TheWrap has learned.
An individual with knowledge of the decisionmaking told TheWrap that the shows “unfortunately did not find a large enough audience” to be renewed for more episodes. A decision has yet to be made on the series “Minx,” which aired its Season 2 finale on Sept. 8.
The decision to remove the shows from the slate came after strong consideration, and per the insider, the network hopes to work with Rafael Casal (“Blindspotting”), Daveed Diggs (“Blindspotting”), Rachelle Williams-Benary (“Run the World”) and Mike O’Malley (“Heels”) in the future. Each of these shows have all aired their second seasons.
“The Venery of Samantha,” starring Katherine Langford and created by Anna Moriarty, only had two more episodes of its first season left to film, but the writers’ and actors’ strikes impacted its cancellation.

It’s Day 13 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 86 of the WGA strike.
Actor Adam Faison took a break from marching outside Disney in Burbank on Wednesday to speak with Deadline, calling artificial intelligence one of his primary concerns for the future of his profession and the industry at large.
His trepidation was informed by an unnerving encounter with the technology that he had within the past year, before the launch of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and perhaps before AI was even breaking so prevalently into the public discourse. The project on which he was forced to grapple with AI was out of the “gaming world,” he said, and called for body scanning.
“Without going into too much detail, there was a recent situation where I was in negotiations with a company and they were very, very ornery and very trepidatious about even talking about AI,” said Faison, whose...

The series stars Katherine Langford in the title role and was created by Anna Moriarty.

Starz has given a series order to drama The Venery of Samantha Bird, starring Katherine Langford in the title role.
Created by Anna Moriarty, the eight-episode series revolves around Langford’s Samantha Bird, who, while visiting family in New England, Samantha Bird reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But underneath their fever dream lurks a more unsettling interpretation of this affair. The series is described as a haunting portrayal of addictive love and the repercussions that a relationship has on the families in a small New England town.
Moriarty also serves as executive producer. Salvatore Stabile (Waco) is showrunner and executive producer. Jessica Rhoades executive produces through her Pacesetter Productions shingle, with Rachel Polan serving as co-executive producer. Jessica Yu is consulting producer.
