Coming to America

Marcel Perez had been a very successful comedian in Italian films. When he moved to the United States in 1915, he worked, as he had in Europe, under a variety of names. Early on, he used the screen name of "Tweedledum", which was what he was called in the British and American prints of his European films. Later he would work as "Twede-Dan" and "Tweedy"... just one of the reasons it's been so difficult to follow the arc of his career.

Although he would later adapt his style of acting and gag construction, at this point he's still playing things as he had in Europe. Using one of the basic plots that many slapstick comedies did at this stage -- he and his leading lady are in love, but her folks want her to marry some one else -- the gags are vicious and not overly impressive -- he sets Louise Carver on fire, for example. The result is a watchable but unmemorable comedy.
