I think about an anecdote that Clint Eastwood once told regarding Chief Dan George. Clint campaigned for an Oscar nomination for George’s excellent performance in “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” A common reply from voters was, “Well, he wasn’t acting. He was just being himself.”
In late October 2019, Sterlin Harjo first mentioned “Reservation Dogs” to me. Sterlin told me that he and Taika Waititi were developing a TV show for FX — and if a miracle happened (God willin’ and the creek don’t rise) and the show got made, he wanted me to be a part of it. Well, that miracle — or more accurately, a series of miracles — happened. With the help of Angelique Midthunder, Sterlin and Taika cast four young Native actors to play the Rez Dogs, four more to play their rivals (The Bad Guy Gang) and dozens more Native actors to populate their fictional community. FX‘s sorely overlooked series Reservation Dogs delivered some of the best storytelling TV has to offer, thanks in part to star, writer, and director Devery Jacobs who, as Elora Danan rose to the occasion for the show’s third and final season later last year. Created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the series opened with a group of Indigenous youth — Elora, Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor) — living on an Oklahoma reservation where they were dealing with the aftermath of their friend Daniel’s (Dalton Cramer) suicide. As the series progressed, the pals moved through their grief, making the long trek to California where they let Daniel go, and begin to think about the next chapters of their lives. For Elora, that means exploring her future career through schooling, but to get to that next step, she must face a mystery from her...

When it comes to the creative partnership of writer/director Erica Tremblay (“Reservation Dogs”) and Oscar-nominated actor Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) — two Native American artists from the Seneca-Cayuga Nation and Blackfeet Nation, respectively — it all started with Tremblay’s Sundance-premiering short, “Little Chief” (2020), inspired by Tremblay’s mother, Sharon.
“I shot it at the school in my community where my mom taught for many years,” Tremblay recently told IndieWire, in a joint interview with Gladstone. “That story felt like a love letter to my mom, and I was drawn to telling more stories about women like Sharon.”
That longing birthed the idea of Jax, one of the central heroines of “Fancy Dance,” Tremblay’s confident and powerful narrative feature debut that premiered in Sundance last year and recently found a distribution home at Apple TV+; landing that distribution deal had much to do with Gladstone’s own...

In September 2021, Olivia Colman bagged her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite having failed on her Oscar bid for “The Father” five months earlier. This made her the 16th performer to triumph at the Emmys after going home empty-handed at the same year’s Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. The release of the 2024 Emmy nominations ballots confirmed that nine of the 16 actors who lost at the latest Oscars ceremony are capable of joining Colman on said list.
Gold Derby’s current Emmy odds indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Ryan Gosling and Jodie Foster, who just earned their respective third and fifth Academy Award notices for their supporting turns in “Barbie” and “Nyad.” They are now generally expected to share in the experience of being first-time acting Emmy nominees thanks to his...

A lot of the work of making a great TV show is done in the casting. Characters with compelling, dynamic relationships are ultimately a huge part of what keeps our attention on the big or the small screen. So, given that Emmy voting has just begun, IndieWire wanted to reach out to some of television’s top casting directors to ask them to nominate one outstanding work from this past year.
Not so unlike seeing 10 great, different actors give 10 great, different interpretations of a role and then somehow having to pick just one, the casting directors who responded to us were quick to point out how many shows have made revelatory casting choices in the last year. “Baby Reindeer,” “Eric,” “Only Murders In The Building,” “Shogun,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” all received warm praise in multiple email threads about our casting directors’ choices, and luckily, most of...

Reservation Dogs delivered some serious laughs and big tears throughout its three-season run, and one of the stars responsible for such strong reactions was Paulina Alexis who played Willie Jack, the outspoken member of the titular group in FX‘s original Hulu series. Shining a light on the impact of youth suicide in Indigenous communities, Reservation Dogs delivered insightful stories and a rich look into reservation life through Willie Jack and her friends, Elora (Devery Jacobs), Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), and Cheese (Lane Factor), who did their best to honor late friend and family member Daniel (Dalton Cramer) while also finding their way in the world. In the show’s third and final season, Willie Jack follows a calling to become a medicine woman, seeking guidance from elder Fixico (Richard Ray Whitman) as she works toward becoming a pillar in her Oklahoma community. Season 3 also saw her reunite with her onscreen aunt,...

Ah, Emmy season. Does it ever end? The answer is a decisive “no” when it comes to 2024, considering we’ve already held one ceremony and are gamely preparing for a second. So many shows, so many artists, so many choices.
Fear not TV Academy voter. Yes, Emmy ballots are overwhelming. No, it’s not possible to lay discerning eyes on every candidate. But your trusty TV critic is here to help. At the cost of my friendships, physical health, and basic sanity, I’ve spent untold hours watching as much current television as humanly possible, from the highest achievements of imagination to the lowest embarrassments of our middling TV era. Now, I pass that experience onto you, via IndieWire’s 2024 Emmy Nominations Dream Ballot — a guide for voters (and reminder for casual viewers) as to what’s worth honoring among the thinning but still dense TV landscape.

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 73 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 22 contenders from last year. As was the case last year, each member’s selections may not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which will be eight in this case.
On its quest for a second consecutive victory here, “The Bear” will have to fend off just two of its seven 2023 rivals: “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building.” Last year’s remaining contenders that did not air episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 eligibility period are “Barry,” “Jury Duty,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Ted Lasso,” and “Wednesday,” the last of which is the only one known to have a new season in the works.

With the start of Emmy nominations voting arriving on Thursday, campaigning has been happening everywhere, at least in and around Los Angeles.
In recent days, one could find top-tier contenders on FYC panels (Jon Stewart and the other hosts of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show flew out from New York for theirs) and roundtables (check out THR’s), at the Ross House in Mt. Many chose this moment to share positive news about their contender — for instance, Apple announced the renewal of Palm Royale for a second season. Others, curiously, elected this moment to drop bad news about their contender — HBO/Max announced the cancellation of Tokyo Vice,...

There have only been 19 Egot winners in entertainment history. This acronym title is attributed to the few stars who win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony, demonstrating them to be one of the very best practitioners in each of the four major entertainment fields of TV, music, film, and theater.
Several stars are looking to become the 20th Egot winner and among those names is Taika Waititi. He won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2020 for “Jojo Rabbit,” ticking off the film segment of the Egot. He then took home a Grammy for the same film in 2021 when he won Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media. That was number two.
However, he has yet to win an Emmy or a Tony. He has never worked on Broadway, but he has reaped three Emmy bids to date. In 2020, he was nominated for Character Voice-Over Performance for playing...

Before the 2024 Oscars ceremony took place, three of the four eventual acting winners had already filmed TV performances that now put them in contention for the upcoming Emmys. If Emma Stone, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Robert Downey Jr. all end up achieving TV academy recognition this year, they will set a record as the first set of three concurrent acting Oscar recipients to appear on the same year’s Emmy ballot.
Randolph, who scored an Oscar in March for her supporting turn in “The Holdovers,” is seeking her first career Emmy notice for reprising her comedic guest role of Detective Donna Williams during the third season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” According to Gold Derby’s odds, she comfortably ranks as her show’s strongest guest acting candidate, even outpacing first season nominee Jane Lynch.

“Reservation Dogs” ended its three-season run back in September, so we’ve had time to accept the sad truth that we won’t be seeing any new stories about this group of Indigenous teens in Oklahoma anytime soon. I would have truly enjoyed another season, and when I get on a Zoom call with series star Paulina Alexis — who played the outspoken Willie Jack — it’s clear she’s also still a bit disappointed that the show has wrapped.
“I feel like I could have went way longer, but not my choice,” she says. “It felt like it was rushed. The questions I get asked now are, ‘ Why is it ending?’ and ‘Are they making another season?’ I’m asking myself that too. I’m like, ‘Why?’ “

X-men '97 Scores TCA Nomination For Outstanding New Program Alongside Shogun, Ripley & Baby Reindeer
The Television Critics Association announced their picks for the best shows of the 2023-2024 TV season on Monday, and in a pleasantly surprising development, Marvel Studios' recent Disney+ series, X-Men '97, picked up two significant nominations.
The animated revival scored nominations for Outstanding New Program and Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming.
Though X-Men '97 proved to be a big hit with fans and critics alike, it's rare that an animated series - and a superhero animated series at that - would receive any TCA recognition, especially outside of the Children's Programming category.
What are the mutant heroes' chances of picking up the win? Well, the show is up against some heavy hitters such as Shōgun, Baby Reindeer and Ripley, so, fittingly, they are the underdogs here.
Former showrunner Beau DeMayo shared the following post in response to the news.

When the 2023 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Ali Wong and Pedro Pascal both had the honor of being included in multiple performance lineups. She made history as the first newcomer to the acting categories recognized for both live action (“Beef”) and voice (“Tuca & Bertie”) work, while he became the first actor nominated for three programs on his initial Emmy outing. These achievements made them the newest members of a group of 26 people who earned their first two (or three) acting Emmy nominations in a single year.
Wong’s eventual Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress win for “Beef” made her the seventh person in this bunch to succeed on one of her bids. The first was Robert Cummings, who received 1955’s Best Single Performance by an Actor prize for “Twelve Angry Men” and simultaneously lost for his regular lead turn on “My Hero.”

For the second year in a row, three shows have topped the Television Critics Association nominations. “Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley” and “Shōgun” lead Monday’s nominations for the 40th annual awards with five bids each.
All three shows are up for Program of the Year, a category dominated by FX and Netflix. The former fielded three nominees with “Shōgun” “The Bear” and “Reservation Dogs,” while the latter is repped by “Baby Reindeer” and “Ripley.” Max’s “Hacks” is the sole non-fx and non-Netflix nominee.
Last year, “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and “The Bear” scored five nominations apiece. “Succession” and “The Bear” wound up with two wins each, with the former taking Program of the Year, but “The Last of Us” went 0-5.
After expanding to eight slots per category in 2021, TCA has reverted to six slots. No reason was given.
More curious, however, is the unprecedented double-dipping by three shows.

The Television Critics Association announced the nominees for the 2024 TCA Awards and, surprisingly, they come with some controversy. “Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley” and “Shogun” led all programs with five nominations each. “The Bear” earned four nominations while “Fargo” took three. That being said, both “Baby Reindeer” and “Fargo” earned noms for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries or Specials which is utterly head-scratching.

Mel Brooks entered even more prestigious awards territory on Sunday, upgrading his Egot to a Pegot as he was recognized with the Career Achievement Award at the 84th annual Peabody Awards.
Brooks became only the fourth person to win a Peabody, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony, behind Barbra Streisand, Rita Moreno and Mike Nichols. Billy Crystal presented the comedy icon with the honor at the organization’s Los Angeles ceremony. (A Pegot can also refer to a Pulitzer instead of a Peabody, which just Richard Rodgers and Marvin Hamlisch have achieved.)
“Mel is a genius who believes that comedy should push boundaries, challenge societal taboos and yes, be a little vulgar when the mood calls for it — and with Mel, the mood often calls for it,” Crystal told the crowd at the Beverly Wilshire hotel. “Mel is one of the big reasons that I have a life in comedy. From documentaries about war in Ukraine and Gaza to the sweetness of “Bluey” to the earthiness of “Somebody Somewhere” and “Reservation Dogs” to the Mel Brooks canon, the 84th annual Peabody Awards ceremony on Sunday saluted an array of standout TV programs, movies, documentaries, podcasts, video games and more.
The respected awards, adminstered by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications, were held at the Beverly Wilshire hotel, marking the first time the Peabodys were handed out on the West Coast after decades in New York.
“Finally, Los Angeles gets an awards show,” host Kumail Nanjiani quipped at the start of the three hour-plus ceremony.
The high volume of conflict in the world and in the U.S. — from school shootings to hate crimes to the spike in political extremism — was reflected in the programs selected for this year’s honors and in the comments on stage from winners.

The Peabody Awards made its long-overdue Los Angeles debut at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday.
Hosted by Kumail Nanjiani, the 84th annual awards ceremony recognized Mel Brooks, Quinta Brunson, Star Trek and more storytellers for its first time on the West Coast since it launched in 1940.
Brooks received the Career Achievement Award for breaking “ground through his use of comedy as a form of resistance” throughout his storied career, according to Peabody.
Brunson was honored with the Trailblazer Award for shining “a light on the challenges faced by public school teachers” through her ABC series Abbott Elementary, as well as opening “doors for the next generation of Black leaders in television.”
The Institutional Award went to Star Trek for the TV franchise’s “enduring dedication to storytelling that projects the best of humanity into the distant future” nearly 60 years after it first debuted.

Reservation Dogs may be a comedy, but the FX original from Sterlin Harjo never shied away from drama or tragedy throughout its remarkable three-season run. In the Season 3 installment, “Deer Lady,” the show serves to shine a light on the horrifying reality of Native American boarding schools with the origin story of the titular character, played by Kaniehtiio Horn. Introduced in Season 1, Deer Lady (Horn) is plucked from Native American mythology and adapted for the show as a spiritual being that operates to keep men and occasionally badly behaving women in line. While she makes brief appearances in early episodes, Season 3 paved the way for a much more in-depth story. When it came to adapting the Deer Lady for Reservation Dogs, Horn recalls when she auditioned for the role, noting that she recognized the figure from her own community’s stories in Canada. “So, there were parallels of the same mythological being,...

When Peabody holds its 84th awards ceremony on June 9, it will finally be in Los Angeles — after four years of trying. The org had decided in 2020 to move its annual event from New York to the West Coast. And then the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and the ceremony went virtual for three years. Last year, it was ready to try again — until the Hollywood strikes forced another in-person cancellation.
Now, Peabody and its executive director, Jeffrey Jones, are ready to give it another shot. “I don’t know what’s going to stop us now,” says Jones, trying not to jinx it. But speaking to Variety just weeks before the event, he was optimistic that this year’s Peabody Awards, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and hosted by Oscar- and Emmy-nominated comedian-actor-writer Kumail Nanjiani, would be worth the wait.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit comedy, which has some open slots in every category.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about the Emmys comedy race, which means you can expect a whole lot of “Hacks” here at the start since we’re both certified members of its stan club. At least anecdotally, the show’s momentum continues to build after its incredible Season 3 finale — so much so that at least one half-baked hot take about how “Hacks” isn’t a “good comedy” was published this week. I’m here for all the “Hacks” attention, and I remain convinced it can win Hannah Einbinder her deserved Emmy plus perhaps bring another writing award to the shelves of Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky.

Variety hosted its inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast on June 5 in Los Angeles. The event included insightful conversations with Indigenous and Native creators, talent, and industry executives such as “Reservation Dogs” showrunner Sterlin Harjo, Bird Runningwater from “Fancy Dance,” Kali Reis from “True Detective” (who was joined by co-star Isabella Star Lablanc and showrunner Issa López) and many more. The program highlighted Indigenous storytelling and the achievements of Indigenous communities in film and TV and even included a surprise message from director James Cameron.
The event also explored how the industry is faring in creating opportunities for Indigenous talent on and off-screen. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Indigenous Native Americans becoming U.S. citizens, as President Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act in 1924, inspired by the high rate of American Indian enlistment during World War I.

Atomic Features, the production company co-founded by Daniel Ragussis (“Imperium”) and Dennis Lee (“Fireflies in the Garden”), has launched a new development fund, having secured financing from a consortium of investors led by Cxm Enterprises, Davis & Associates, and Pine Valley Investments.
Atomic’s development fund will employ the formal methodology devised by Ragussis as the founder of Notes for Execs, the industry’s first workshop to help executives give better notes to screenwriters.
Notes for Execs launched in 2019 and has included participants from Warner Brothers, Universal, Fox and Disney, as well as multiple management companies and agencies. Ragussis was also formerly Head of Development for Lucas Foster’s Anvl Entertainment.

When the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released a report surveying film roles for Native Americans last October, of the 100 highest-grossing theatrical movies released between 2007 and 2022, only one had an Indigenous performer in a lead role. Yet when speaking to Native creatives and performers, there is an overwhelming sense of optimism for what’s to come for their representation in entertainment. “I feel very hopeful about where we are,” Jana Schmieding, who recently starred on “Reservation Dogs,” tells Variety. “I want to think that studios see the value in our storytelling.”
Variety’s inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast, which will take place June 5 in Los Angeles, will focus on both the value and future of such stories. The invite-only breakfast program will feature a series of keynote and panel conversations with creators, talent and executives that will center on Indigenous storytelling and spotlight the achievements of its communities in film and TV.

It would be a radical understatement to say that getting cast in the role of Willie Jack on the hit FX comedy “Reservation Dogs” changed the life of Paulina Alexis, the woman who played her for all three of the show’s seasons. Overnight, she went from being just another struggling 20-year-old actor to a sensation, particularly in the Indigenous community. “I got mobbed the night the first episode premiered (in 2021),” she recalls. “When it comes to going to Native events back home, I couldn’t go to a powwow or go walk around and stand in line for a bannock burger or go to Wal-Mart in my sweats anymore. People knew me immediately. I mean, I knew the show was going to blow up, but I wasn’t prepared for (everything). It was huge, especially in Native country.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

The number of movies about gifted youngsters sacrificing the traditional teen experience in favor of artistic perfection or academic excellence is immeasurable. "Stick It" peered into the world of Olympic hopeful gymnastics, "Whiplash" pulled back the curtain of elite musicianship, and "Bring It On" turned the world of competitive cheerleading into one of the greatest teen films ever made. This is all to say, coming-of-age stories in this territory are well-tread, so finding a way to stand out among so many all-time greats is a massive undertaking. Fortunately, for D.W. Waterson's directorial feature film debut, "Backspot," this stylish, unapologetically queer look at the world of All-Star Cheerleading (not to be confused with high school cheerleading) is a soaring breath of fresh air.

Some of the entertainment industry’s leading ladies celebrated The Hollywood Reporter‘s inaugural Women in Entertainment Canada event in Toronto on Thursday.
The all-day gathering at the Park Hyatt Hotel was attended by stars like Nia Vardalos, Lilly Singh, director Kari Skogland, Devery Jacobs and Catherine Reitman. “I’m not sure what the requirements are for being an icon, but I’m 67, and I’m rocking with that,” Kim Cattrall said when accepting the Icon Award at the Wie Canada Tribute Awards.
“Congratulations to all the other honorees. It’s amazing what women can do when we come together,” the Sex in the City star added. The event, which coincided with the publication of the Canadian Women’s Power List, focused on driving efforts to achieve gender equity and career breakthroughs for Canadian women in front and behind the camera.

Lily Gladstone has had a breakout year these past 12 months. She featured in season three of FX’s “Reservation Dogs” but, most impressively, stole the show in Martin Scorsese‘s Oscar-nominated epic “Killers of the Flower Moon.” She actually came close to winning Best Actress for her turn in that film but, alas, had to settle for earning her first-ever Oscar nomination. Not a bad consolation prize.
Now, however, she could snag her inaugural Emmy nomination thanks to her terrific performance in “Under the Bridge,” the Hulu true crime series that documents the murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk in 1997. Gladstone features as Police Officer Cam Bentland, who investigates the murder. Her turn expounds upon what we gleaned from her work in “Killers of the Flower Moon” — this is a wonderful actress who can communicate so much with so little dialogue. There is something so delicious about biting into a comedy from the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock universe. “30 Rock,” of course, was the gold standard — and a show I find myself still quoting to this day. Team the Fey camp with Meredith Scardino, who cut her teeth on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” and you get “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” another landmark show that helped Netflix define its smart comedy brand early in that streamer’s life.
Scardino was also part of the Fey/Carlock collab that gave us NBC’s “Mr. Mayor,” and I am still a bit angry that not enough people tuned into that sharp series. Ted Danson and Holly Hunter led a workplace comedy that delightfully skewered Los Angeles while setting up some amazing character dynamics.
But that’s not what this column is about. Yes, the short life of “Mr. Mayor” still stings. Instead,...

The 21st century cheerleader is an athlete unlike any other. With a wide-eyed grin, flashy makeup and a glittering bow to match, she is required to be sturdy yet feminine; pliant yet steely. In “Backspot,” D.W. Waterson’s feature directorial debut, the Canadian filmmaker has crafted a thrilling character portrait that puts those seemingly incongruent demands to the test. And, in the process, they have created a bold showcase for Devery Jacobs (“Reservation Dogs”), an actress who deftly captures the vexing tightrope walk required of young women in such a demanding, performance-driven, sport.
What’s immediately noticeable when you first meet Riley (Jacobs) are her eyebrows. Waterson doesn’t have us fixate on them but as you witness Riley going about her cheerleading practice with, among others, her girlfriend Amanda (Kudakwashe Rutendo), you can’t help but wonder why they’re so thinned out. Missing out on making (even more) Oscars history is ancient history to Lily Gladstone.
The “Killers of the Flower Moon” breakout could have been the first Native-American actress to win the Best Actress Academy Award — if not for Emma Stone’s physical and soul-baring turn as Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” For now, being the first Native-American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award will have to do, but with all the projects and opportunities Gladstone’s got on her plate after “Killers” — including being a recent part of Greta Gerwig’s jury at Cannes — it’s easy to imagine more awards are on the way.

Amazon MGM Studios has rounded out the cast of Oh. What. Fun., its all-star holiday comedy being directed by Michael Showalter, who is coming off the record-breaking success of the streamer’s romantic drama The Idea of You.

Michelle Pfeiffer is leading the ensemble that already include Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Denis Leary and The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa.
Described as both a love letter to moms and tonally a cross between Home for the Holidays and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the story centers on a woman named Claire Clauster (Pfeiffer) who organizes a special Christmas outing, but her family forgets her in the shuffle. Described as both a love letter to moms and tonally a cross between Home for the Holidays and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the story centers on a woman named Claire Clauster (Pfeiffer) who organizes a special Christmas outing, but her family forgets her in the shuffle. By the time they realize their mistake,...

Why did fans love Our Flag Means Death? This series was a big upgrade for the on-screen pirates – they no longer sail the seas in search of mystical artifacts as in the cult Pirates of the Caribbean. Our Flag Means Death shows the pirates of a new era – they are absurd, humorous, and surprisingly vulnerable.
Our Flag Means Death was also an ode to escapism. In the hands of screenwriter David Jenkins, the story of an aristocrat-turned-pirate is transformed into a funny and poignant exploration of escapism as a way out of a mental crisis.
However, the devoted love of the fans did not save Our Flag Means Death from cancellation after the second season, and it continued a series of Taika Waititi's axed projects. In early 2023, the series Reservation Dogs was completed, and then the last, sixth season of What We Do in the Shadows was released.

IndieWire launched our “Pass the Remote” FYC TV screening series, produced in partnership with Disney, with a dynamic casting directors panel April 25, two Disney Storytellers panels April 29, and a panel about “Abbott Elementary” May 20.
Next up? A “Jim Henson Idea Man” panel on May 24 celebrating the documentary about the Muppets creator, which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Like all events in the “Pass the Remote” screening series, it will take place at the Vidiots Foundation in Los Angeles’s Eagle Rock neighborhood.
Legendary director Ron Howard will be in attendance on the panel, as will composer David Fleming and editor Paul Crowder. Howard is a two-time Oscar winner. In recent vintage, he’s become a more prolific documentary director, with films such as “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week” (2016), “Pavarotti” (2019), “Rebuilding Paradise” (2020), and 2022’s profile of Jose Andres and the World Central Kitchen, “We Feed People.”

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”
Lili Loofbourow (Washington Post) declared: “At its best, when it leans...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we wonder if some old faves can over-perform in comedy.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to laugh again about this year’s Emmys comedy race. This has remained a pretty stable race, so much so that not even FX seems concerned about “The Bear” and its status as the obvious frontrunner. The third season of the show comes back on June 27, after Emmy nominations voting has closed and well before final voting begins. It seems like Season 2 of “The Bear” is so far out in front that it might not even need Season 3 to goose its win potential. That’s maybe bad news for our beloved “Hacks,” which always faced an uphill battle in Best Comedy Series but...
