She boasts about the music she's playing, and Harry tells her not to touch her brother and starts to break the violin.
Alma hastily says that she understands so Harry will stop. When her father says that he's trying to keep their family together, Alma wonders why they need Doris and says that her mother doesn't need greatness like they have. Doris cries and says that she had a bad dream about Alma, and Alma says that maybe the pills will make the dreams go away. She offers Doris the pills, and one capsule of Muse is among them. Doris calls to Harry, who comes in.
Doris asks him what Muse is. Harry says that he doesn't know, and Doris says that Alma gave it to her and is trying to poison her. Ursula comes in and says that Doris is suffering from post-partem depression, and should be sedated. When Doris shows Harry the bite marks, he says it was a scrape from the tracking device the nurses put on the baby at the hospital. Doris doesn't believe him, and Alma tells Harry to stop lying to Doris. The girl says that she gave Doris the pill so she'd be one of them.
Alma explains that Muse is letting Harry write the scripts and she can play the violin. Doris asks Harry if it's true, and he backs away without a word. Alma says that drinking blood isn't so bad, and Ursula tells Doris that Muse will make her designer dreams come true. Harry tells them to stop, and Alma says that Doris might not think that she's great enough. Ursula chimes in, and Alma asks Doris if she thinks she's good enough.
Doris takes the pills and the glass of water... and finally throws the glass on the floor. She grabs the baby and runs out onto the street, and Pale Persons surround her. They see Doris and Harry tells Doris to go upstairs with Ursula. Ursula comes up, and Harry says that he invited Holden to finish her work. Doris says that she doesn't need help, and Holden praises her work. Upstairs the baby cries, and Doris lactates. Harry tells her to feed the baby, and in a daze she goes upstairs while Harry and Holden go back to the swatches.
Mickey goes back to his shack and looks at Karen's paintings. Karen comes in and accuses Mickey of telling Belle where she was. He says that he didn't know it was a secret, and Karen tells him what Belle told him to do. Mickey tells her to do it, and that Muse will make everything better for her. When Mickey offers the pills, Karen knocks them to the floor. As he picks them up, Karen says that she wants to take the baby away so that Belle can't get it, and she figures that raising a baby will help her get clean.
Karen tells Mickey that she needs his help, and he needs to do something good before he forgets and it's too late, and because he love her. Karen hugs him, and Mickey looks at her paintings.
That night, Doris is in the bed and holding the baby. Alma looks in from the door and then runs in and sits on the bed next to Doris. She asks Doris what they're going to name the baby, and Doris suggests Eli. Alma agrees, and Doris tells Alma that she hurt the baby when she fed. Doris insists that she knows what happened wasn't a dream, and Alma tells her that when she feeds on baby blood the music she makes is beautiful.
Doris puts the baby in the bassinet and tells Alma that she can't feed on her brother or any baby. Alma promises that she won't and says that she doesn't want to lose her family. Doris wonders how Harry can bring darkness into the family, and Alma says that they spread light with their creativity and Doris can have it all, just like them.
Doris tells Alma that it's not okay to hurt people just to be good at something. Alma takes out a pill and tells Doris that they get used to the blood and forget where it came from. However, they never get used to the perfection. Alma says that she loves Doris and wants her to have the same perfection. Doris strokes her face, and Alma holds the pill up to Doris' mouth and tells her to open her lips. Doris does so and Alma puts the pill in her mother's mouth. They hug, and Alma tells Doris that she loves her so much.
The next day, Alma practices and Doris sketches out designs. Doris throws up after her drawing turns to scribbles.
That night, Harry, Alma, and Ursula go out to get some food. Harry says that he took the car keys, and Doris won't be going anywhere. Karen and Mickey sneak up to the house and break in, while the Pale Persons watch them from the beach. Mickey tells Karen that they won't hurt her if she's with Mickey. Inside, Doris hears them moving, thinks it's Harry, and calls that she doesn't feel well.
Doris gets out of bed, while Mickey and Karen go up the stairs looking for the baby. Karen insists that they can't kill Doris, and they go into the bedroom. Doris comes out of the bathroom and asks who they are. Karen goes to get the baby, and Doris steps into the light and they realize that her hair is falling out as she turns into a Pale Person.
Karen grabs the baby and runs out of the house. She stops, coughing, and the Pale Persons advance on her. Karen runs back to the house but falls on the steps. Mickey walks up and the Pale Persons treat. He tells Karen that he loves and believes in her, sits down next to her, and says that he's going to have to leave Karen there... unless she takes Muse. Karen insists that she won't, and Mickey says that he believes in her and they could be together and happy. He asks why Karen can't believe in herself the way he does, and Karen says that she doesn't care if she's good enough. Karen tells Mickey that he's not human, and Mickey admits that he's not and says that it's goodbye. He tells Karen that she was his muse, takes the pill, kisses her on the forehead, and walks away. Karen begs Mickey to stay, and the Pale Persons advance on her. Karen takes the pill, and the Pale Persons immediately retreat from her as she cries.
Doris goes into the bathroom and looks at herself in the mirror. More of her hair falls out, and she takes an electric razor and cuts the rest off. Doris hears the baby crying and continues, then goes downstairs and grabs a butcher knife from the kitchen. She then goes back upstairs to her baby and raises the knife above her head.
Harry comes in and knocks Doris down, then stares at her I in dismay. He tells her to look at him, and she says his name. The baby starts crying, and Doris grabs the knife and tries to kill it. Harry throws her into the bathroom and locks the doors, and Doris pounds on the doors while screaming wildly.
Harry barricades the doors and wonders why Doris would take the pill. Alma and Ursula come in, and Alma says that she gave Doris the pill, and she and Ursula knew that it would turn Doris into a Pale Person. Ursula tells Harry that they needed to get Doris out of the way.
Karen goes to Mickey's shack and tells him what happened, and says that she should have let the Pale Persons kill her. Mickey tells her that she needs to feed, and they'll find someone who is better off dead. Karen is sick, and Mickey tells her that his offer still stands. Karen figures that she might become a Pale Person, but Mickey tells her that she won't and she's a great painter. She insists that they' both cursed, and Mickey takes her hand and asks her what her one painting would be. Karen smiles and nods, and Mickey tells her to create that painting and see what she can do. He tells her that first she has to feed.
The next morning, Harry peers into the bathroom but doesn't see Doris. She smashes her hand through the glass, reaching for him, and he pulls back as she pound son the doors for a minute and screams. Once Doris goes silent, Harry sits down on the bed and says to her that he once said that his family was more important than anything. Harry says that it made him feel better, and his work life wasn't impressive. He tells Doris that he should have been honest with her, and it's sorry that it happened. However, Harry tells Doris that he's outgrown her and it will be less painful for Doris not having to see his success.
Harry opens the bathroom doors and finds Doris on the floor. He leads her outside, with Alma and Ursula watching. Ursula says that there's nothing more pathetic than a person without talent trying to make it in the world, and goes inside. Alma takes Harrys hand and smiles up at him, and he smiles back. Meanwhile, Doris staggers off.
On the dunes, Mickey and Karen go to the spot where Karen was painting earlier. He spots a person nearby on the beach that they can feed on, and tells Karen that once she feeds she can produce her masterpiece and they'll be a team. Karen tells Mickey that she's going to help them both, and then rips out his throat and feeds.
Afterward, Karen lays out her supplies and starts painting. She eventually walks off, walks to the water, and stares out at sea. Karen cuts her wrists and lets the blood drip into the water, then walks into the ocean, killing herself.
