There hasn’t been a lot to celebrate at the box office in 2024. Ticket sales have languished. There’s been a dearth of blockbusters. And a few movies that bucked the odds to actually debut in the first half-of-the year probably should have skipped theaters altogether. We’re looking at you, “Argylle.”
And yet, some films still managed to pack in crowds. “Dune: Part Two” and “Inside Out 2” performed like major studio movies of yore, while IFC’s “Late Night With the Devil” proved that there’s still life in the indie business. There were also redemption stories. Will Smith restored the luster on his tarnished star with another “Bad Boys,” and “Garfield,” whose love affair with lasagna dates back to 1976, proved that some kitties have nine lives.
Here’s a look at what scored and stumbled as 2024 reaches its mid-point.

Box Office – It’s a half-century for Chandu Champion after yet another good jump on Sunday; needs to keep consolidating now – Sunday updates ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
It’s a 50 for Chandu Champion. The film could have managed that on Saturday but missed scoring that by just a few lakhs. However, the moment Sunday morning shows kicked off, there was a half-century celebration waiting for it. The film carried forward the momentum created ever since the start of the weekend, which is reflected in Sunday collections, which have come well.
The film ended up netting 8.01 crores more, and that’s much more than double what it had collected on Friday [3.32 crores]. It was a similar trend in the first weekend as well when Sunday collections were double that of Friday, and that was when on Monday there was the partial holiday of Eid, which benefitted evening and night shows on Saturday. No one saw this coming. “Inside Out 2” (Disney) fell only 35 percent in its second weekend. Following a great $154 million opening, huge initial weekdays, it’s added an estimated $100 million. That puts it at $355 million in only 10 days.
How big is that? Second only since Covid to “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021, which had December 25 and 26 in the first 10 days of its opening, eventually grossing $470 million in that time. It even edges out “Barbie” ($351 million) and bests the full run of “Oppenheimer.”
This is phenomenal. In many ways, this weekend is even more impressive than the strong debut. With less emphasis on premium screens and of course many lower-price tickets for kids, sales outpace any release since “No Way Home.” Kids also always elevate concessions, which makes the bounty for theaters even greater.
The total weekend gross will be around $152 million, an improvement of $41 million from last year and reducing the year-to-date shortfall to 21 percent.

After just two weekends of release, “Inside Out 2” is towering above the rest as the highest-grossing movie of the year.
Disney and Pixar’s sequel has generated $355 million in North America and $724 million globally to date, overtaking the previous record holder, “Dune: Part Two” ($282 million domestically and $711 million worldwide). At this rate, it’ll soon be the first movie of 2024 to cross $1 billion worldwide.
Internationally, the “Inside Out” sequel collected $164.4 million from 44 territories in its second outing. So far, it has earned $369.2 million overseas to stand as the year’s third-biggest international release behind “Godzilla x Kong” ($371 million) and “Dune Part 2” ($429 million). Top earning markets include Mexico ($63.9 million), the United Kingdom ($29.2 million), Korea ($29 million), Germany ($17.9 million) and Brazil ($17.3 million). It opens in its final major market, Japan, on Aug. 1.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die has proven to be a big hit for Sony Pictures, with its current worldwide gross sitting at $227 million and growing. It also pushed the Bad Boys franchise over the $1 billion box-office mark. I’d imagine this is good news for a potential Bad Boys 5, and although nothing is official, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah do have a few ideas.
While speaking with Variety, the pair said they’d like to make Bad Boys 5 a more “international” story. “We’re going to first see what this is going to do,” Fallah said. “But what we want [is] to go around the world with them.“
El Arbi added, “In every country we were imagining, how would Mike and Marcus be in France, or how would they be in the U.K., or how would they be in Dubai, or in Morocco, or in Africa, or in Asia?...

Last weekend, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 ended the box office woes that have plagued movie theaters since mid-spring. With a $155 million domestic opening, which is the second-highest animated film opening ever, Disney’s Pixar is now back at the top of the box office heap. With very little in the way of competition this weekend, its continued run at number one is all but assured. But how much will it make on its second weekend, and how steep will the week 2 drop be? If you look back at The Incredibles 2, which is the highest-grossing animated opening ever, it fell off about 56% in week two, although I think Inside Out 2 may have a better hold.
Despite its blockbuster opening, I remember the audience’s reaction to The Incredibles 2 being relatively cool. Audiences seem to be absolutely loving Inside Out 2, with many finding the introduction of Maya Hawke...

Riding high on the tidal wave of success, Sony Pictures and the charismatic Will Smith are already eyeing the horizon for new creative ventures, the ink barely dry on their latest hit, Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Based on Daniel Suarez’s lauded novel Influx, Resistor is set to challenge our perceptions with a tale of brilliant minds against covert suppression. As the actor prepares to star in Sony’s latest science fiction thriller, intrigue surrounds the project, which seems to be reminiscent of a previous Keanu Reeves flick – Chain Reaction (1996 film) – with a similar premise of revolutionary technological discovery.

Will Smith is lining up his next feature, following the career-reviving success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Smith is in talks to star in Resistor for Sony Pictures, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The project that hails from Escape Artists is an adaptation of the 2014 novel Influx from New York Times bestselling author Daniel Suarez, although specific plot details have not been shared. The book focuses on a government agency that locks away inventors in a secretive prison and hijacks their work.
A director is not yet attached for the film, which is currently in development. Screenwriter Zak Olkewicz (Bullet Train) penned the first draft, and the latest version is from Academy Award-nominated writer Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick, American Hustle).
Producers include Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Tony Shaw and Dave Wilson, alongside Westbrook’s Smith and Jon Mone. Heather Washington is executive producing.

Over the weekend, "Inside Out 2" gave the box office a much-needed shot of life with a record-breaking $155 million opening domestically. Pixar's acclaimed sequel also posted the biggest opening ever for an animated film globally. That has, understandably, taken the lion's share of attention in the press. Not to be lost in the conversation though is the fact that "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" managed to hold surprisingly strong against Disney's animated juggernaut. In the process, it cemented Will Smith (once again) as one of Hollywood's biggest A-list movie stars.
While "Inside Out 2" was dominating the charts, "Ride or Die" managed to drop just 40% in its second weekend, adding another $33.7 million domestically. This comes after the fourth film in the "Bad Boys" franchise topped the charts the previous weekend with a $56.5 million haul. It also grossed just shy of $31 million overseas over the weekend, bringing its running global total to $214.6 million.

Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die jolted the battered summer box office back to life with a better-than-expected domestic opening of $56 million and $104.6 million globally. Moreover, it puts Will Smith on the road to a career comeback two years after the infamous Oscars slap. Ride or Die, reuniting Smith with Martin Lawrence, is the fourth outing in Sony’s long-running franchise and earned an A- CinemaScore in North America alongside generally positive reviews. Just as promising, 44 percent of the audience was between ages 18 and 34, showing Smith has a following among younger consumers. Black moviegoers made up...

After many months of disappointing showings at the box office, June seems to have fully recovered with Pixar having its biggest hit since pre-pandemic. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Disney released Pixar’s sequel “Inside Out 2” into 4,400 theaters after it scored a terrific 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The voices of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith and Lewis Black, were joined by new emotions voiced by Maya Hawke, Ayo Edebiri and Adèle Exarchopoulos, but the success of the original Oscar-winning movie in 2015 drove millions to theaters to be the first to experience the sequel.
“Inside Out 2” managed to rack up $13 million in Thursday previews, which was added into Friday for a $62 million opening day. Disney is estimating that the animated sequel will gross $155 million domestically over the Father’s Day weekend. Asked by Empire magazine earlier this year whether their characters utter the classic "Lethal Weapon" line "I'm too old for this s**t" in "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," Will Smith and Martin Lawrence gave a passionate reply. "We refuse! We refuse!" said Smith. "We refuse to give it any power! We are as young as we feel!" concurred Lawrence. The box office certainly seems to agree, with "Ride or Die" riding in with a $56.5 million debut last weekend. Now, according to Smith himself, the fourth movie has officially carried the franchise as a whole past $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Meanwhile, "Ride or Die" will soon be celebrating its own personal milestone. The movie was knocked down from the box office No. 1 spot this weekend by the arrival of Pixar's "Inside Out 2," but it's expected to gross another $31.5 million that will take its domestic total past...

In the world of basketball, the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and former professional basketball player Michael Jordan are easily considered two of the biggest names to have ever played for the National Basketball Association.
However, Hollywood actor Will Smith seems to have a different final name on his list of Goat NBA players.
LeBron James. | Credit: Erik Drost/Wikimedia Commons.
Although he holds both James and Jordon in high regard for how tremendously these two professionals contributed and continue to contribute to the sport, Smith actually tends to differ in his respective opinion on who the Greatest Of All Time basketball player is.
And his response is one that might displease both James and Jordan’s die-hard fans.
LeBron James and Michael Jordan Aren’t the GOATs in Will Smith’s Eyes
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence recently had their latest film in the Bad Boys saga released, Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Whenever a Sony movie comes in at No. 1, Tom Rothman drives his 1967 Ford Mustang to the Culver City lot and leaves it parked in front of the Thalberg building. But on Monday, there was a hitch after Bad Boys: Ride or Die opened to a victorious $56.5 million at the domestic box office: the red beauty wouldn’t start.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) had an exceptional first Monday gross of $6,250,000. That result, combined with multiple positive other elements, suggests that it will ultimately be the biggest domestic grosser among early summer (May through two weeks of June) openers.
Currently, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) leads among an overall disappointing set of releases with $150 million ($5.4 million last weekend). That projects to around a $170 million ultimate domestic result.
“Ride or Die” opened with $56.5 million, $1.9 million less than “Apes.” But with Monday’s total it is now less than $200,000 behind, and should be easily ahead of it for the full week.
Predicting that “Bad Boys” exceeds $170 million, perhaps getting closer to $200 million, is based on several factors playing in its favor. Let’s start with the trajectory of its results so far.
Recently unreliable tracking estimated a $45 million-$50 million opening. After Thursday’s previews, industry consensus was $53 million.

When the summer was in need of saving, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett came to the rescue. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited on screen over the weekend in "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," the fourth installment of the long-running franchise, serving as a sequel to 2020's "Bad Boys for Life." Much has happened in the four years since that movie came out but one important thing hasn't changed: people really love these characters. As such, the new movie easily topped the box office with an impressive global debut.
"Ride or Die" opened to $56.5 million domestically, which was above weekend estimates. It was a little below the $62.5 million that "Bad Boys for Life" opened to in 2020 but that movie also opened in January when there is generally far less competition. Not to mention the pandemic that forever changed moviegoing habits of the general public. So the fact that the sequel...

Theaters will live to fight another day. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) provided more than half of the gross this weekend, taking #1 with $56 million. That isn’t a record for the franchise (with previous films at lower ticket prices), but it is a critical victory for the industry at a time it desperately needs them.
Will Smith’s first wide release since his catastrophic Oscar behavior in 2022 represents a triumph for star power, franchise filmmaking, action titles, and titles that draw from minority audiences (over two thirds for the weekend were Black and Latino). Most of all, it was a vital sign that underperformance for highly touted summer films isn’t a given.
In the face of rising industry panic, an under-$40 million opening for “Ride or Die” (its 2020 predecessor opened to $62 million) could have ratched the doom and despair to toxic levels. Instead, it blew past tracking projections...

The first full weekend of June brought a modicum of hope to the summer box office, as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for the fourth installment of their popular “Bad Boys” action-comedy franchise. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” had been planned since 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” became the highest-grossing blockbuster that year, partially due to Covid shutting down theaters a few weeks after its release. Opening in 3,885 theaters, including IMAX and other premium screens, “Ride or Die” received mixed reviews with 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it was expected to be fairly review-proof with the popularity of its two stars. It ended up making $5.88 million in Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, and $21.6 million on Friday, including those previews.
Sony is estimating it to make $56 million in North America its opening weekend, which is less than the previous movie’s $62.5 million holiday opening,...

Updated: Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die pummeled pre-weekend opening projections, coming in with a $104.6M global bow, including $48.6M from the international box office. While the overseas debut is slightly off 2020’s Bad Boys for Life which did $50.3M in like-for-like offshore markets at today’s exchange rates, that film had strong legs. Either way, Ride or Die‘s start gave some much needed oomph to summer turnstiles. Its launch is 58% bigger than Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The Will Smith/Martin Lawrence reteam from directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah was driven overseas by Europe with $19.3M across the region. It set new regional records for the Bad Boys franchise in Latin America and the Middle East with $10M and $9.5M, respectively.
Of the 60 markets released this session, the UK leads with $4.9M (+ 31% over Furiosa). Mexico was next with $4.2M, followed by Germany at $3.7M (2.5x...

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” surpassed the $100 million mark globally in its first weekend of release.
The fourth installment in Sony’s buddy cop comedy series, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, has collected $104.6 million, including $48.6 million at the international box office. Moviegoers have embraced Smith’s first major film since he assaulted Chris Rock on stage at the 2022 Oscars, though it helped that he returned to theaters with a franchise that has endured over 30 years.
Sony spent $100 million to produce “Bad Boys 4” and many millions more to market the film to global audiences. At this rate, the fourquel is well positioned in its theatrical run. However, it remains to be seen if it’ll match 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” as the franchise’s highest-grossing installment with $206 million domestically and $426 million globally. Turns out, Bad Boys are good for ticket sales.
Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth entry in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led buddy cop series, started strong with $56 million from 3,885 theaters in its domestic debut. The film also opened at the international box office with $48.6 million, bringing its worldwide tally to $104.6 million.
The sequel to 1995’s “Bad Boys,” 2003’s “Bad Boys II” and 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” is notable as Smith’s first major film to grace the big screen since he assaulted Chris Rock on stage at the 2022 Oscars. So what should Hollywood take away from “Bad Boys” in its fourth go-around? Well, audiences haven’t soured on Smith — though it helps that he returned to theaters in a time-tested and generally well-received franchise.

Sunday Am Final: Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die had a great Saturday of $19.5M, -10% against previews/first day of $21.6M, for what’s shaping up to be a $56M opening. This is the highest-grossing R-rated opening since Oppenheimer last July, and Will Smith’s sixth-highest U.S./Canada opening overall of his career and his 18th No. 1 opening as a leading man.
For Martin Lawrence, Bad Boys: Ride or Die is his 8th No. 1 domestic opening. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah-directed fourthquel beats its recent round of tracking of $40M+, but is also ahead of its initial $50M+ forecast from three weeks ago, proving there’s still life in moviegoing. Really. This is just the beginning of summer. Global was even bigger on Bad Boys 4 with $104.6M.

Will Smith snuck into a Los Angeles movie theater on Friday night to watch his new movie, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, alongside a paying audience.
The actor documented his night out on social media.
“We’re in Baldwin Hills. We’re about to go in the theater,” Smith says in the video of his theatrical visit. “It’s a ritual I have, when I have a movie come out. On Friday, Saturday, usually a matinee on Sunday, I like going to the theaters.”
Smith is then shown sporting a mask while watching his film with fans.
After the movie ended, Smith revealed to shocked moviegoers that he had been watching the film with them. A growing crowd seemed excited to see Smith and captured photos and videos. One fan gave the movie a “10 out of 10” and Smith thanked him.

They became fast friends on the set, and Bad Boys became a franchise that’s still going three decades later. Through all the years and the success and even the controversy both stars have courted throughout their careers, Smith and Lawrence said that when it comes to their friendship and their working relationship, like the title of the latest Bad Boys film, the two men are Ride or Die, and they think the audience can see that in their work. The boys are back in town. Sony and Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” got off to a solid start at the box office with $21.6 million from 3,885 locations across Friday and preview screenings. The movie also gets a revenue boost from Imax and other premium large format auditoriums.
The action sequel, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is now looking at an opening of $53 million through the three-day frame in North America. Sony had initially projected a debut of $30 million heading into the weekend, going way below industry estimates of $45 million to $50 million. The studio seems to have made a cautious lowball, considering “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” have given the summer box office a run of high-profile titles debuting below expectations.

If early weekend estimates are correct, Sony’s buddy action comedy Bad Boys: Ride or Die could help jolt the battered summer office back to life with a domestic box opening of $53 million. Moreover, it could help put Smith on the road to a career comeback after the infamous Oscars slap, which was seemingly addressed in the film.
Bad Boys 4, reuniting Smith with Martin Lawrence in the fourth outing of Sony’s long-running franchise, earned generally positive reviews and, perhaps more importantly, an A- CinemaScore. Black moviegoers made up the largest quadrant of the audience with 44 percent.
Friday’s haul of $21.6 million included $5.9 million in Thursday night previews. Ride or Die is arguably the first film of the summer to come in ahead of tracking, which had it opening to $48 million to $50 million. It’s also the second biggest behind Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

In January 2020, Adil and Bilall began to ride high. The Belgian directing duo’s American debut, Bad Boys for Life, set a franchise record with $424 million, becoming the highest grossing domestic film of the pandemic-stricken year. That fall, they joined the MCU’s Ms. Marvel and helmed the first two episodes of Kamala Khan’s coming-of-age superhero series. Led by Iman Vellani, the Disney+ show would eventually garner critical acclaim, especially Adil and Bilall’s outings, which added some much-welcomed visual flourishes to Earth-616. Then, in the spring of 2021, the filmmakers extended their hot streak when they signed on to direct the Dceu’s Batgirl for HBO Max. And to top it all off, in May of 2022, their Belgian film, Rebel, premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival to strong reviews.

After several weekends of disappointments at the box office, Miami’s finest may be here to turn things around.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die opened to a positive $5.9 million during Thursday night previews at 3,339 locations. The film is expected to open between $45 million and $50 million this weekend, with Sony setting expectations lower at $30 million. The film’s budget sits at $100 million.
Ride or Die is the follow-up to Bad Boys for Life, which earned $6.4 million in Thursday previews on its way to a $62 million opening weekend. Opening in January 2020, it went on to earn $426 million at the global box office before theaters were shut due to the global pandemic.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is a film about retribution and redemption. Not just on screen, but in execution. After their last attempt at a blockbuster was shelved in the name of a tax loophole, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah seem intent on unleashing all their pent-up energy, whether they’re selling us Batgirls or Bad Boys. Even if it bears the baggage of a meta redemption arc for its star, Ride or Die brings enough stylistic gusto to its action in the absence of Michael Bay but has a hard time justifying most other decisions, which adopt the tedium rampant in modern blockbuster filmmaking.
The infusion of Fast & Furious DNA into Bad Boys seemed inevitable by the third entry. Who could blame a long-dormant action franchise for taking its cues from one of the most prevalent (and successful) film series in the intervening 17 years? In the case of Ride or Die,...

The concept of a movie star is a very fragile thing in 2024. Once upon a time, a movie star was something carefully cultivated, their public persona not just controlled but essentially constructed by a studio's PR department. Nowadays, movie stars are still highly desirable to producers and advertisers; the notion of a "name" actor still carries weight. Yet up-and-coming actors are struggling harder than ever to become so-called household names, as one of the biggest issues with media these days is that there's just too damn much of it.
Thus, we have a dearth of capital-m, capital-s Movie Stars right now, and the ones who can still open a movie on the strength of nothing but their name and persona make up a short list. On that list is Will Smith, who successfully transitioned from television to movie screens...

Will Smith thinks that improvements to TV shows have made things harder for the film industry. The 55-year-old star believes that the box office is struggling because the spectacle is now matched on the small screen, making it more challenging to entice audiences to the cinema.Speaking on the latest episode of Hot Ones, Will said: "The definition of a hit is still pretty much the same. Essentially, it's just harder to get one."You used to be able to put some explosions in the trailer and a couple of good jokes and people were there. And television is so good, there are things that people just aren't going to leave their house for. There's definitely a higher demand for a certain type of film for people to leave their homes."Meanwhile, Will also revealed that he regards the 2006 drama 'The Pursuit of Happyness' as the "best movie" of his career.
