Hello everybody, what’s up? You’re listening to I Was Just Wondering With Tom Salmon! The podcast that dives into music, film and games and everything else in between.
My guest on this week’s episode is Xinyi Zhu who directed her latest short film Kindling (2020) starring Jill Renner and Nicole Falk. The film tells the story of childhood best friends Piper and Celeste, who are forced to reassess their relationship as they drive across America to a small-town abortion clinic.
We jumped into Xinyi’s experience growing up in China and falling in love with filmmaking by secretly watching films on her iPod Nono, how studying psychology at UCLA influenced her approach to storytelling and what’s it like writing a new feature film screenplay in the era of Covid-19.
You can checkout Kindling and Xinyi’s other short film projects on Vimeo right now at https://vimeo.

Arkin is... excuse me Josh Stewart is one hell of an actor. While hes certainly best known for his role as Arkin in the Collector franchise hes diving deeper into the world of horror making appearances in The Walking Dead miniseries as well as surfacing in the forthcoming season of AMCs liveaction rendition. He surfaced in Grimm and had a hand in Beneath the Dark and now hes back yet again to flex his horror muscle.

Over the last few years, producer Chad Feehan has begun building a filmography for himself in independent film--most notably with his first film, feature-length production All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (which got some very positive notices in these parts before rights issues kept the film from being released in the U.S.). Now Feehan has taken on writing and directing duties for his own film, Beneath the Dark, the psychological thriller which hits DVD from IFC films on March 29th. The movie stars Josh Stewart (TV's No Ordinary Family, Law Abiding Citizen), Jamie-Lynn Sigler (The Sopranos, Entourage), along with Chris Browning, Angela Featherstone, and Afemo Omilami in a psychological thriller where young couple Paul and Adrienne "Paul and Adrienne pull off the highway and into...

At first glance (and even second), the quiet indie thriller Beneath the Dark (aka Wake, to those who prowl the film festival circuit) starts out feeling a bit like the kind of stuff John Dahl makes (damn solid flicks like Red Rock West and Joy Ride), and then feels more like a standard "motel thriller" a la Vacancy or Identity -- but finally in the third act, Beneath the Dark becomes its own movie. Unfortunately it was more interesting when it was copying other flicks. Sort of a neo-noir that, to its credit, asks you to jump in and keep up with two (and a half) disparate subplots that, of course, are slowly being drawn together. Thread one involves a young couple who are forced to spend the night at an out-of-the-way...

Never heard of this flick until now. I received the info via email likely because there’s a brotha and sistah in it who seem to have notable roles of some kind (well, he does anyway).
His name is Afemo Omilami, by the way. He’s done a lot of TV, and has seen parts in bigger films. But I’m not too familiar with his work. Her name is Carlease Burke, and her resume is somewhat similar to his.
In the film, titled Beneath The Dark, Paul and Adrienne, a young couple burning up the desolate miles on the road between Texas and La, check into the equally desolate but eternally stylish Roy’s Motel and Cafe. As if preserved in time, the motel proves to be a strange and surreal place where the guests are forced to confront the secrets that they keep – from the world and from each other.

Jamie-lynn Sigler was left shaken on the set of new thriller Beneath The Dark after discovering the U.S. government was testing bombs nearby.
The actress moved to a desolate area of the California desert to shoot the movie and was awoken in the early hours of the morning when her house began shaking .
Sigler discovered she had moved next to a military base that was testing explosives.
She says, "We filmed it in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the desert in California.
"I guess we were near a military base and I didn't know that at first because my backyard was miles of desert and in the morning my house started shaking. I didn't realise they were testing bombs."...

Our friends at IFC dropped us a line to let us know about some of their recent genre acquisitions, and they've definitely got some good ones on their hands. Hot off the heels of The Human Centipede, come on in and see what's waiting in the wings at IFC (Hint: it's Tetsuo II & III).
From the Press Release
In IFC Midnight news, we recently acquired two films from director Shinya Tsukamoto’s acclaimed Tetsuo trilogy: Tetsuo III: The Bullet Man, the third installment in the series and the first new Tetsuo film in nearly 20 years; and Tetsuo II: The Body Hammer (1992), the second film in the series. The series tells the story of a man who, upon getting angry, becomes a human weapon. We plan an early 2011 release for both films.
We are also excited to announce the acquisition of Chad Feehan’s Wake, which had its world premiere at SXSW this year.

It's Monday morning and time for a roundup of Austin film news! Let's see what's cooking:
The Austin Critics' Table Awards focuses on art, music and theater (and not film -- what, film isn't art?) but the group's 2010 awards include a local film composer, Graham Reynolds (A Scanner Darkly, I'll Come Running, Holy Hell). Reynolds won the John Bustin Award for Conspicuous Versatility. In addition, Golden Hornet Project, of which Reynolds is a founder (and the group's Facebook page also includes Tim and Karrie League among its Board of Directors), took home the Symphonic Performance award for "Symphony VI." You can hear some of Reynolds' work with film scores on Wednesday, June 23 when he performs a score he composed during a Paramount screening of the 1927 silent film Wings.I just found out that I'm not going to be able to attend Austin Film Society's gala Make Watch Love Film party this Friday,...

In the previous article announcing IFC's acquisition of Wake they also reveal that director Chad Feehan will next direct Beyond The Pale, an adaptation of William Gay's novel "Twilight". In the novel teenage siblings Corrie and Kenneth Tyler suspect they've been ripped off by the town undertaker, but what they discover is much more sinister than either imagined. After their bootlegger father is buried, Kenneth sees undertaker Fenton Breece remove an item from the grave. The siblings dig up their father's grave, among others, and uncover unsettling evidence of Fenton's necrophilia. Corrie cooks up a blackmail plot and enlists Kenneth to steal Fenton's briefcase, which contains, as Kenneth and Corrie soon find out, photos depicting Fenton "capering gleefully" with corpses. Blackmail material in hand, Corrie demands $15,000 from Fenton, and Fenton hires local psychopath Granville Sutter to muzzleby whatever means necessarythe Tylers and get back the photos. - Publishers Weekly.

When we first meet Paul (Josh Stewart) and his girlfriend Adrienne (Jamie-Lynn Sigler), they are on a road trip through the Mojave desert, headed to L.A. for the wedding of one of Paul's college buddies. After a driving scare they decide to pull over and stop at Roy's Motel and Cafe, and that's when the weirdness starts. They seem to be the only customers, night manager Frank (Chris Browning) inspires an odd sense of deja vu, and a strange man (Aferno Omilami) who confronts Paul in the cafe seems to know a lot more than he should about Paul's relationship troubles with Adrienne. It soon becomes apparent to Paul that the increasingly surreal events are indelibly linked to his dark past.

The setting is the Mojave Desert and help is not just a phone call away. The tension mounts and a couple travelling the nearby highway get involved in a "horrifying secret" (Trailer). Among the world premieres at SXSW 2010 is Texas native Chad Feehan's feature writing/directing debut, Wake, which screened at the Paramount this afternoon. Wake is a twisty thriller featuring The Bone Collector's Josh Stewart and Soprano's Jamie-Lynn Sigler as a couple on the way to a wedding when they decide to stop for the night in a roadside motel. Instead of a restful night's sleep, strange encounters force them to deal with a haunting secret from the past, including a overly helpful and creepy hotel clerk.
Very slowly two apparently unrelated storylines evolve that eventually collide with devastating results. While atmospherically shot, Wake suffers from simultaneously trying to be too clever and making sure all the pieces are tightly assembled. One of the more frustrating aspects of catching films at festivals is finding ones with an intriguing concept that doesn't quite work as delivered to the screen.

Well, my day two of SXSW started just like any other day. I woke up, had a couple breakfast tacos at El Chilito on Congress then hung out with Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Micmacs, Amelie) for 25 minutes. Jeunet is my favorite director of the last two decades - three of five of his films (Delicatessen, City of Lost Children and Amelie) are some of the only films of the last 20 years that are currently on my favorite films of all time list. I consider Jeunet to be one of the very few working cinematic geniuses. So sitting a mere three feet away from him was mind-blowing, and being able to ask him questions was...well...it was a once in a lifetime experience. Of course, hanging out with Jeunet in the cloakroom of the Stephen F. Austin Hotel with two other critics and a bunch of camera guys was not my ideal...

Roy's Motel is not what it seems. In writer/director Chad Feehan's debut film Wake, a young couple on the road, played by Josh Stewart and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, stop for the night at Roy's on the road to California, hoping for a warm bed and hot coffee, and end up in a strange psycho-drama where all of their darkest secrets are laid bare. It's a movie that defies easy categorization, a corkscrew morality play that rivals the very best episodes of The Twilight Zone, and we've got four exclusive pics from the new film.
Wake makes its debut at SXSW on Saturday, March 14th with Feehan and his stars on-hand for the premiere. If you like your movies a little more unpredictable than the average flick, you'll definitely want to keep Wake on your radar. Check out the gallery for our exclusive stills.

Chad Feehan's (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane) film Wake will have its premiere at the South by Southwest film festival, which, as reported, kicks off March 12th. The film's plot centers on the Roy's Motel. Here characters Paul and Adrienne step into a "surreal place" (SXSW). This is Feehan's first time in the director's chair and he describes the film here: "we took your traditional, eerie Motel backdrop with unsettling characters similar to Psycho or Identity, then infused it with the drama and emotions" (Twitch). This will be the one to see in Austin, Texas. For anyone not able to make it, more details to follow.

Best known in horror circles as a producer on All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, Chad Feehan is doing it all on upcoming psychological horror film Wake. Serving as writer-director-producer on the film, Feehan is currently prepping for his big debut at SXSW but he took some time out to answer a few of our questions.
TB: You've done a few films as producer before, but not as director. How imposing for you was it to go into something like this where so much was riding on you not just producing, but also as writer and director?
Unlike my previous experiences, there is no veil to hide behind as the writer, director and producer. The film and its success, sits squarely on my shoulders, which was initially intimidating. But as the cameras began to roll and I found myself working with the cast and crew, that feeling quickly subsided. I...

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.
