NBC has given a script commitment plus penalty to The Last American Vampire, a drama based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel of the same name, from Grahame-Smith, his producing partner David Katzenberg and former 12 Monkeys showrunner Terry Matalas. 20th Century Fox TV, where Katzenberg and Grahame-Smith’s KatzSmith Productions has a pod deal, is the studio.
Written by Matalas, The Last American Vampire is supernatural thriller that follows a 500-year-old bloodsucker and bon vivant named Henry Sturges, who’s been held under lock and key for the last forty years, and who’s believed to be the last of his kind. Are you ready kids? Rumblings are afoot that we are in for a new Fantastic 4 movie that is to be based on the next generation with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies co-author, Seth Grahame–Smith penning the initial draft.
Although the last Fantastic 4 outing comprising of Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell completely bombed, the new version will fast forward a few years and focus on the offspring of Reed Richards and Susan Storm, Franklin and Valeria, but will still feature the Thing and the Human Torch. This has all the hallmarks of the studio looking to change its audience for a much younger one who could appreciate their efforts.
Grahame-Smith is no stranger to the Marvel universe; having penned The Spider-Man Handbook: The Ultimate Training Manual, an examination of Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man, with an introduction by Stan Lee, and the Hulk issue of Marvel Zombies Return with artist Richard Elson. He also served as the co-creator, head writer and executive producer of The Hard Times of Rj Berger, a TV comedy series on MTV. Could this hiring of Grahame-Smith be the much-needed inspiration Fox needs for this franchise? Only time will tell.
Although 20th Century Fox has so far failed in their attempts to win over audiences with the franchise to date the tonally new direction for the franchise will be met with some trepidation. Executive Producer Simon Kinberg had already stated that the studio still wanted to make another offering surrounding the family so it should have come as no surprise it was on the horizon.
Kinberg stated, “Yes, we would love to make another Fantastic Four movie, We feel like there’s a great Fantastic Four movie to be made and I think it would hue closer to the tone of the original, the source material, the comics, but we want to make that movie.”
No word has come from either Fox or Marvel.

Sony Animation is pulling out all the stops to boost its output for 2017 and 2018, and the result is some fairly wide-ranging news regarding both the television and film side of the operation. With its animated Spider-Man feature already moving full-speed ahead – with Phil Lord and Chris Miller on board – and television series of both Ghostbusters and Cloudy With a Chance Of Meatballs in development, the biggest titles currently under discussion are Hotel Transylvania 3, that film’s overall franchise, and EmojiMovie: Express Yourself.

If Warner Bros. and DC Comics were looking to one-up Marvel in the game of leftfield directing choices after this weekend’s announcement of Taika Waititi for Thor: Ragnarok, the companies have managed it. Prolific author, screenwriter and producer Seth Grahame-Smith is in negotiations to write and direct The Flash. Grahame-Smith, who has thus far limited his directing to two episodes of TV comedy The Hard Times Of Rj Berger, which he wrote on and produced, would seem to be a hugely unlikely candidate for the job of one of DC’s big comic book movies despite his experience behind the camera in other roles. He adapted his novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter into a film, wrote Dark Shadows for Tim Burton and has written and is producing a multitude of other projects, including a Gremlins reboot, a Beetlejuice sequel and a new Looney Toons film. Do you remember all the typical garbage you had to deal with in high school? You had to wear the right clothes, hang out with the right crowd, and get all your homework done so you could pass. All those seem hard enough to handle. Now add to your laundry list of things to do "Escape from my fellow students who have turned into zombies." High School was bad enough before. Imagine having to attend Detention of the Dead.
A nerd, a jock, a cheerleader, a bully, a goth, and a stoner are stuck together in detention. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? It's just a typical afternoon in high school until ravenous zombies overtake the hallways. Now the motley crew of teens must put aside their differences in order to survive a terrifying night of the walking dead.
Detention of the Dead is exactly what it looks and sounds like. It's...

Vertical Entertainment Acquires 'G.B.F,' a Tale of Gay Best Friends and Their Role in Clique Warfare
Vertical Entertainment has acquired all North American rights to the high school comedy film "G.B.F." (Gay Best Friend). Directed by Darren Stein ("Jawbreaker") with screenplay by George Northy, the film has a cast of young up-and-comers including Sasha Pieterse ("Pretty Little Liars"), Evanna Lynch (The Harry Potter Franchise), Natasha Lyonne ("Orange is the New Black"), Joanna "JoJo" Levesque ("Rv," "Aquamarine"), Paul Iacono ("The Hard Times of Rj Berger"), Michael J. Willett ("United States of Tara"), Molly Tarlov ("Awkward"), and Rebecca Gayheart ("Jawbreaker") and features Megan Mullally ("Parks and Recreation," "The Kings of Summer"). "G.B.F" plays with the concept of a G.B.F. (a Gay Best Friend) and how they have become a trendy and invaluable accessory for straight girls to have in their cliques. The film is being touted as a modern twist on the high school movie genre. The film premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival and was recently shown at Outfest.

Tanner (Michael J. Willett) is the Gbf everyone wants (including Sasha Pieterse)
In the fine tradition of teen comedies like Clueless, Pretty In Pink, Mean Girls and even darker films like the original Carrie, comes the new film, G.B.F., which fabulously dives into the world of the Gay Best Friend. Directed by Darren Stein (Jawbreaker) from a script by George Northy, the film follows high schooler Tanner (Michael J. Willett) as he navigates the treacherous waters of high school after coming out.
In the world of G.B.F., there’s less opposition to Tanner being gay than the comedy found in how people want to be close to the cute gay guy. The popular girls compete for Tanner’s friendship, even helping him with a makeover; at least one closeted guy (the Bf of one of the girls) makes a pass at him and, at the end of the day, he...

WB has hired Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire, Fantastic Four) and David Katzenberg as producers for a Gremlins remake. Katzenberg is known for his TV work, on The Hard Times Of Rj Berger and the short lived Fox sitcom, Ben And Kate.
No writer or director has been chosen as of now, but it’s clear that the beginnings of a Gremlin reboot is underway, after Frank Marshall announced earlier this year that they were looking into it, if they got Spielberg’s okay. These same two men are working on a Beetlejuice sequel, which is also in the early stages.

Another day, another remake. We've been reporting rumors and news and bits of updates about a remake of the lovable monster classic Gremlins for many years. In January we wrote about Warner Bros starting active development on the remake/reboot, however there is a quote from last year that is still relevant: "it can't be remade without Steven [Spielberg's] permission." Well, our friends at Bloody-Disgusting are now reporting that WB is moving forward and they've assigned Seth Grahame-Smith (of the Pride, Prejudice & Zombies novel, plus Dark Shadows, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) to work on developing the film. Details are still unconfirmed and at the moment they're only saying that Seth Grahame-Smith is producing alongside of David Katzenberg. "No word if Smith will also write this new take on the Steven Spielberg-produced Gremlins." Interesting. Since working on Dark Shadows, Grahame-Smith has executive produced MTV's "The Hard Times of Rj Berger" and started...

Those tired of trying to make fetch happen, fear not: "G.B.F.," a.k.a. the next high school movie with enough quotable dialogue to produce Tumblr memes from now until forever, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival this year.
"You kind of come into it and you don't know what to expect. Then once you're in, it just gets better and better," star Michael J. Willett told HuffPost Entertainment about the teen comedy. "People came up to me and said, I was laughing so hard and then you made me cry. I thought that was perfect."
Directed by Darren Stein (whose last feature film was 1999's "Jawbreaker") and written by George Northy, "G.B.F." focuses on what happens after Tanner (Willett) is unwittingly outed by some nosy classmates and becomes the title "gay best friend," the acquaintance-cum-accessary who three high school queen bees (played by Sasha Pieterse, Andrea Bowen and Xosha Roquemore...

Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison production company are signing up for Summer School. Sandler plans to remake the 1987 Mark Harmon-starrer about a gym teacher who has to cancel his summer vacation to teach summer school to a bunch of misfit high schoolers. Kirstie Alley ("Dancing with the Stars") and a very young Courtney Thorne-Smith ("Two and a Half Men") also starred in the original. Bryan Shukoff and Kevin Chesley, who together wrote three episodes of MTV's "The Hard Times of Rj Berger," will write the script. It's not clear yet if Sandler will star in the movie or not.

Adam Sandler's remake of the the 1987 comedy Summer School is moving forward as Bryan Shukoff and Kevin Chesley have been hired to write it.
The original film was great! It starred Mark Harmon as a gym teacher who was forced to cancel his summer plans to teach a remedial English class full of lazy, troublemaker students.
As of right now, Sandler is only attached as a producer, but there's a chance he could end up starring in the film. I could easily see him in the lead role -- it can't be any worse than anything else he's done recently. This is one of those films I figured would get remade one day. I guess it will be interesting to see how things turn out with it. Paramount has been trying to do this one since 2005. Star Trek writers and producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were actually developing the movie at one point.

"The New Normal" is one of NBC's newest comedies, which just got a full season order along with "Go On" and "Revolution."
"New Normal" tells the story of Goldie, a surrogate for a gay couple that wants to have a baby. Jayson Blair ("The Hard Times of Rj Berger") plays Goldie's husband Clay, whom she leaves when she catches him cheating on her. But Blair tells Zap2it there is more to Clay than meets than eye.
"Clay will have an evolution for sure. We gotta have something to keep the story alive, you know? He loves his family more than anything. He just can't help himself," says Blair. "I don't think it's 100% his fault."
"The way that I personally attack is that Clay's not good at much and he probably isn't even good at sex, but he thinks he's the best at it. And Goldie doesn't give him an...

NBC has picked up a new Michael J. Fox sitcom for 22 episodes for fall of next year. The show will be about Fox as a dad, battling the day to day, and also Parkinson's disease, which Fox has been living with for some time. Not only am I thrilled because I've had a crush on Alex P. Keaton since I was a teen, but I think it's a bold move to write his disease into the show.
