- Zatara talks about how when he was 28, on road with his act and then raising his daughter Zatanna with his wife Sindella. One night a curtain caught fire and Zatara used his real magical abilities to put out the fire and save the audience. The audience thought it was part of the act, and for Zatara it was a new beginning.
In the present, Klarion watches Flaw kill Tekli and then be sent away as an embodiment of Chaos. Tekli's body reverts to its normal-sized cat form, while Fate and Sentinels watch from inside the Tower. Fate realizes that Tekli's death caused Klarion to revert to his true form as a Chaos Lord, that he couldn't maintain on the Earthly plain. Child unleashes magic on the Tower, destroying it, and Zatanna casts a spell to protect everyone. Child giggles at the destruction, and Flaw punches Fate when he tries to attack Child.
Mary tries to use her magic, but discovers that the local ley lines have been disrupted. She absorbs magical energy from Traci and Khalid, and unleashes it on Child. Child and Flaw teleport away, while Zatanna uses her magic to rescue Traci and Khalid. Zatanna checks on her father and discovers that he's unconscious and his Fate helm is cracked.
Director J. Anson Schwartz is filming an episode of 'Space Trek' with an unenthusiastic Gar playing Tork. Schwartz calls cut and tells Gar to show a bit more enthusiasm. Gar agrees but misses his line in the next take.
Klarion in his flaming diamond Chaos form plummets through time and space, and figures that he needs a hero.
In Metropolis, ten years ago, a school bus is heading to school. It crashes on a bridge when a suspension cable snaps, and Superman saves the bridge. Superboy is with him and pulls the bus to safety, possibly destabilizing the bridge. Superman arrives and catches the bus, and argues with Superboy about whether he endangered everyone on the bridge. Eventually, the two superheroes fly off. Klarion emerges from the timesteam, and realizes that he's arrived too late and has to find another hero. First he merges with the bus to emerge as an anchor on the mortal plain, tells the driver Charlie that he's taking it over, and makes the bus disappear.
In the past, Zatara sees Superman on the television and takes him as inspiration from an immigrant to also become a superhero. Zatara prays for guidance until he knows what he needs to do, then dons a mask and fights crime. He wished to do more, and an elderly Kent Nelson approached him.
In the present, Zatanna rouses Fate. Fate tells her that he and Zatara have recovered. Meanwhile, Khalid and Traci complain to Mary about stealing their powers, and Mary insists that there wasn't time to ask. They reluctantly concede that she had no alternative but ask her not to do it again without asking.
Fate restores himself using magic but is unable to fix his helm. He begins the hunts for Child but tells Zatanna that he won't be a power boost from the Lords of Orders to fight Child. He teleports away through a portal and the Sentinels follow him.
On the TV set, Schwartz tells Gar that he needs to shape up. He ask if Gar needs some help dealing with Conner's death, but Gar insists that he's fine. Schwartz offers to replace Gar and let him take a rest.
In the past, Nelson teaches Zatara more magic. With his life a hero, Zatara spends less time with his family. Nelson watched over Zatara's family when he couldn't, but Zatara prayed on it and came to believe his absence from his family was a sacrifice for the greater good. Sindella eventually died of cancer, but Zatara had to perform as a magician to pay medical bills and continue as a hero. Eventually, Nelson told Zatara that Sindella had died.
In the present, the team travel to Sydney and find a volcano in the harbor. Fate warns that they're too late, and Child has come and gone. Khalid wants to stay and help the people, and Fate tells him that they have to save the world. The Phantom Stranger appears, says Fate is correct, and that he's summoned every hero he could recruit to each new crisis Child has caused, as Xanadu predicts them. However, their efforts will mean nothing if the Sentinels don't stop Child. Zatanna reluctantly agrees with Fate, and tells the Sentinels that they have to go.
Klarion teleports the bus through time, trying to find suitable heroes.
Fate and the Sentinels arrive in Manhattan and discover that Child has reversed gravity. Heroes are trying to rescue people along with the villain Wizard's help, and Fate teleports them to Poseidonis where a volcano has appeared near the underwater city. Child has already gone, so the heroes go after her to Taipei. A portal to Hell has opened, and heroes are holding the emerging demons back. The heroes find more chaos in Agra, but there are no heroes there so Fate figures they're getting closer.
Klarion in the bus arrives in Manhattan and sees the Sentinels flying through the city, and realizes that he needs them.

In the past, Zatara loses control when he loses his wife. At Nelson's suggestion, Zatara joins the Justice League and battles mystic threats with others. He's able to go on performance tours, taking Zatanna with him. He becomes an inspiration to those coming after, and Zatanna eventually chooses to become Fate as a result. Zatara offers himself as Fate's host body to free his daughter, and Fate accepts. He is still allowed one hour a year to give Zatanna his time and attention.
In the present, Gar lets himself be replaced.
The Sentinels arrive at the North Pole and find Child and Flaw. Child is preparing to melt the polar ice cap, and the Sentinels attack her. Flaw shields Child, and the other Sentinels power up Fate with their magic. Child shrugs off the attack, and blasts the Sentinels away. She manifests a giant ice hand to grab Fate, and says that they can't kill her but she can kill every living thing on the planet. Child teleports away with Flaw, and Klarion arrives.
In the mindscape, Zatara tells Fate that is Nabu's responsibility to tells Zatanna his story. Nabu promises, and Zatara says that in the coming battle, he won't allow his daughter to perish. Zatara figures that it will take all of his life force for Fate to survive and win,
Four of the heroes gather in Agra, and Superman figures that they have to organize a Justice League Reserve to deal with any future crises.
