After teaming with Noah Baumbach to direct one of the best-ever documentaries about filmmaking, De Palma, Jake Paltrow is back with a new feature. June Zero is a vividly textured telling of the preparations for the 1962 execution of Adolf Eichmann through a triptych of perspectives––a Jewish Moroccan prison guard, an Israeli police investigator (and Holocaust survivor), and a clever and precocious 13-year-old Libyan immigrant. In advance of the June 28 release from Cohen Media Group, we’re pleased to exclusively reveal a series of influences the director has programmed for NYC’s Quad Cinema.
“Origin Stories: Jake Paltrow’s Notes on June Zero,” which runs June 21-27, features seven films that informed and influenced June Zero, with titles spanning humanist deep-cuts of world cinema from the likes of Miloš Forman and Abbas Kiarostami to underscreened classics of 1970s Israeli cinema. Watch the exclusive trailer for the series below, along with...

Horror anthology Satanic Hispanics assembles five Latin American horror filmmakers to celebrate Hispanic talent in front of and behind the camera, curating tales that spotlight Hispanic myths and legends. Uniting four tales of terror is Satanic Hispanics‘ wraparound from producer/director Mike Mendez.
In Mendez’s wraparound, a police raid uncovers a grisly crime scene full of dead bodies. They take the sole survivor, a man that refers to himself as “The Traveler” (Efren Ramirez), into custody for answers. The Traveler attempts to explain the bizarre events that led up to his capture to skeptical detectives Gibbons (Sonya Eddy) and Arden (Greg Grunberg). He entertains them with four tales of supernatural encounters, hoping to persuade them to let him go.
Ahead of the film’s theatrical release on September 14 (tickets on sale now), Bloody Disgusting spoke with the filmmaker about the challenges of curating an anthology and helming a wraparound...

He’s known as The Traveler, and when they take him to the station for questioning he tells them those lands are full of magic and talks about the horrors he’s encountered in his long time on this earth, about portals to other worlds, mythical creatures, demons and the undead. Stories about Latin American legends.”
Meet the Traveler, played by Efren Ramirez, in the clip below. Helmed by director Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), the Traveler is featured in the wraparound that connects four other tales of terror.

Chicago – Time travel “what ifs” and cruise ships has never been so close to our current reality, and it’s present in the unique film “Same Boat,” directed by Chris Roberti and co-written by Roberti with Josh Itzkowitz. The VOD release for the film is Tuesday, April 7th.
The very funny, warm and philosophical film presupposes a future in which time traveler assassins come back to save their world – which has been devastated through bad decisions in the past – by killing the people who will affect that devastation. James and his “intern” Mot (Julie Schonberg) are assigned the hit on Lilly (Tonya Glanz), who is vacationing on a cruise ship, but complications arise when James begins to have feelings for the target. The whip-sharp comedy is full of authentic laughs derived from the plot and situations, plus the always weird vibe of a cruise ship. Roberti and Itzkowitz have fashioned...

The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.
Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.

Update with final ranked list: The 15th annual Black List was released Monday, with Ken Kobayashi’s romance screenplay Move On leading the coveted rundown of unproduced screenplays in Hollywood with 29 votes.
The screenplay follows Teddy, who thinks he’s the only living person left in a world where humanity is frozen in time. That is until his ex-girlfriend, Leyna, shows up at his doorstep. Together, they venture to find the cause behind the freeze and in the process, confront the issues that plagued their relationship before it’s too late.
Some titles on this year’s list have already been snatched up by studios. Don’t Worry Darling, with 19 votes on today’s list, had 18 bids going for it over the summer, with New Line winning and Olivia Wilde directing and starring as exclusively reported by Deadline. Also as exclusively reported by Deadline this morning, Netflix snapped up for high six figures First Ascent,...

“I believe in a cinema which gives more possibilities and more time to its viewer—a half-fabricated cinema, an unfinished cinema that is completed by the creative spirit of the viewer, [so that] all of a sudden, we have a hundred films.” —Abbas Kiarostami, 1995That the filmmaking practice of Abbas Kiarostami can be described as pedagogical is, in some sense, self-evident—at least for the early portion of his directorial career. In 1969, as the Iranian New Wave was cresting, he joined the filmmaking department of Kanun (or the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults), and would, for the subsequent two decades, produce a set of films that laid the groundwork for one of the most original and varied of filmmaking careers. “We were supposed to make films that dealt with childhood problems,” said Kiarostami of his work during that period. “At the beginning it was just a job, but...

Three years after Palme d’Or-winning Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami passed away at the age of 76, Janus Films is rolling out a wide-ranging and lovingly designed touring retrospective of some of his seminal works. The new retrospective includes restorations of The Koker Trilogy, plus features like “Close-Up,” “Taste of Cherry,” “Shirin,” “24 Frames,” “ABC Africa,” “The Wind Will Carry Us,” “Ten,” and “Five.”
The new restorations were undertaken by the Criterion Collection and mk2 with contributions by Kiarostami’s son, Ahmad Kiarostami.
Born in 1940 in Tehran, the filmmaker first studied painting at the University of Tehran; later, he worked as a graphic designer and commercial director. Kiarostami credited a job in the film department at Kanun (the Centre for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults) for shaping him into a filmmaker.

We’ve got a new extended trailer for you to watch for Jordan Peele’s revival of The Twilight Zone. While I liked what I saw in the promo spots for "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet" and "The Comedian," this new trailer offers us a look at all the other episodes that the first season of the new series will entail. Personally, I like what I’m seeing!
The Twilight Zone is one of the greatest shows ever created, and while this revival won’t be as good as the original, it still looks like a solid series that will entertain and tell some interesting stories. I’m curious to see how this turns out.
You’ll also see many of the cast members in the series that includes Greg Kinnear, Kumail Nanjiani, Seth Rogen, John Cho, Ike Barinholtz, Taissa Farmiga, Ginnifer Goodwin, Luke Kirby, Sanaa Lathan, Adam Scott, Rhea Seehorn, Alison Tolman,...

CBS All Access has just dropped the first full trailer for Jordan Peele’s highly anticipated revival of The Twilight Zone. This gives us our first real look at the stories that will be told in the first season. It actually looks like it’s going to be pretty good!
As you’ll see, they’ve made some pretty significant changes to some of the original episodes that are being remade. There are also a few little Easter eggs to keep a look our for as you watch the trailer because there are some things that you’ll recognize.
The new series is described as an anthology that will tell self-contained stories in every episode. Also, like its predecessors, it will lean on science fiction, fantasy, and horror to tell tales laced with social commentary.

Once Upon a Time star Ginnifer Goodwin is the latest actor to join Jordan Peele’s revival of The Twilight Zone. She will appear in an episode titled “Point of Origin” which will also star James Frain and Zabryna Guevara.
There are no character or story details revealed, but there was one original Twilight Zone episode where Rod Serling mentioned the phrase “point of origin” in his opening narration. It was for an episode called “The Call”, and this is what he said:
“Norman Blane, whose greatest fear is that, if he were to vanish from the Earth tomorrow, no one will notice, or mourn, or question, and whose greatest sadness is the realization that he is probably right. Sofa, coffee table, chair, and pet; solitary decorations in a life noted chiefly for its isolation. Point of origin and point of destination for Norman Blane, whose days and nights are routinely swallowed into unhappy silence.
