- High-school teens in San Francisco decide to compete in the Mobilgas "Safety Economy Run", sponsored by the General Petroleum Co., a supervised economy run around the San Francisco area, to show that teenagers aren't the wild and irresponsible drivers that many adults assume them to be.—frankfob2@yahoo.com
- Sharon King, a senior at Peninsula High School in San Francisco, laments all the negative publicity that young drivers, hot rodders like her classmate Tay Stevens, are bringing upon her and her contemporaries, she who sees herself as a good driver without any infractions in her two years of driving. Because of this negative publicity, her father won't allow her to go on a "car" date with Jimmy Cushman or anyone else, and the school principal, Mr. Potter is threatening to do what many other area principals have already done, namely lock all student cars in the school's parking lot during class hours. It is then that Sharon comes across something called a Safety Economy Run for high school students sponsored by Mobil Gas. Organized by the students themselves, it is a competition over an approximate one hundred mile course to see who is the best driver in terms of skill in adhering to traffic rules and as important in terms of gas efficiency. Sharon, Jimmy and their friends get on trying to organize such a run in San Francisco, but even if they are able to convince all those that need to be convinced to have such an event, will it change the minds of her father, Mr. Potter and hot rodders like Tay?—Huggo
