Welcome to the new column “Comics Issues” where two Sound on Sight writers debate a important or controversial comics industry topic. First up, we discuss whether the DC New 52 was a successful initiative or not. Feel free to post your opinion in the comments below.
Pro: “The DC Comics New 52 was successful.”
Overall, I think the New 52 was a successful initiative for DC Comics. The new #1’s attracted a lot of new readers (including yours truly) and made titles like Action Comics and Batman, which seemed inaccessible with issue numbers in the three digits. Speaking of Batman, the New 52 has been a time of creative renaissance for the character and his family of titles from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s soon to be legendary run on the title to artistically interesting books like Gotham Academy and Grayson. Other highlights of the New 52, include Grant Morrison’s metafictional event comic...

The Film:
One of the great things about these DC Showcase short films, is how they focus on lesser known (well to the mainstream) DC characters and give them a shot to shine. It harkins back to Showcase comics, a series that began in the 1950s that offered a few stories in each issue, which was a spot for some characters to debut or get a revival, like Atom, The Flash, and Green Lantern. This is no different for Shazam!, a character once forgotten until his late Silver Age revival in DC Comics in the 1970s.
Superman/Shazam!: Return of Black Atom is a great film. Mixed with marvelous animation and a great voice cast (like Arnold Vosloo as Black Atom), it’s everything that is sometimes missed in their full-length films. It’s tightly focused, action-packed, and it makes a character like Captain Marvel cool and interesting. Sure,...

Thanks to MTV we have the first look at Jonah Hex from the animated short Batman: Under the Red Hood. The animated adventure hits store shelves later this month on DVD and Blu-ray featuring the animated adaptation of a story written by Judd Winick. Just like the previous DC animated films this one also features a short of a lesser-known character from the DC Universe, this time it's the scarred Western anit-hero Jonah Hex featuring Thomas Jane as the voice of Hex.
"DC Showcase: Jonah Hex" is directed by Joaquim dos Santos from a screenplay by Joe R. Lansdale. The film is based on an original story by veteran "Jonah Hex" comic creators Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti.
Thomas Jane voices the title character, with Michael Rooker as Red Doc. Linda Hamilton and Michelle Trachtenburg are also rumored to provide character voices in the film.

So, the “Jonah Hex” movie with Josh Brolin didn’t do it for ya? (Given the film’s box office, it apparently didn’t do it for a whole lot of people.) Maybe the animated short film with Thomas Jane will change your mind about the character. MTV has a minute-long preview of the “Jonah Hex” short film that will be accompanying Warner’s “Batman: Under the Red Hood”, which is scheduled out later this month. “DC Showcase: Jonah Hex” is directed by Joaquim dos Santos from a screenplay by the legendary fiction writer Joe R. Like previous DC animated films before it, "Under The Red Hood" will be accompanied by an animated short film based on a lesser-known character's from the publisher's stable — in this case, the scarred Western anti-hero Jonah Hex.
"Punisher" actor Thomas Jane voices Hex in the animated short, which you can get your first, exclusive look at here on Splash Page!
Longtime readers will remember that Jane campaigned for the role of Hex in the live-action film based on the character— a role that eventually went to Josh Brolin. Would Jane have made a better Hex? "DC Showcase: Jonah Hex" could be our best way to find out.
