- Will's duet challenge, with a free meal for the winners, causes some relationship issues between the members of the club.
- Open with Will (Matthew Morrison) telling the kids Puck has been sent to juvi and introducing new member Sam (Chord Overstreet). Finn (Cory Monteith) is fired-up to see him. Will explains the nature of the duet and instructs everyone to pair-up for a competition. The winner gets dinner for two at Breadsticks, on Will.
Kurt (Chris Colfer) introduces himself to Sam in the hallway and accuses him of having dyed hair. He then asks Sam to be his duet partner.
While making up, Brittany (Heather Elizabeth Morris) asks Santana (Naya Rivera) to be her partner. Santana says no and the next day asks Mercedes (Amber Riley). Mercedes finally agrees their voices "sort of go together."
Finn tries to tell Kurt not to ask Sam to be his duet partner, reminding him of how aggressive Kurt was with him last year. He thinks if Sam is Kurt's partner, he'll get so much teasing from other student he'll have to quit Glee.
Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn practice Elton John's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." They both think they're going to win the competition and this makes Rachel sad. She thinks she's too selfish and suggests they throw the competition and let Sam win.
Mike (Harry Shum Jr.) isn't sure he wants to sing with Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz). She complains all they ever do is eat Dim Sum with his mother. Tina really wants to eat at Breadsticks and have a normal meal. Mike thinks they should go to Asian couples therepy.
Brittany tells Artie (Kevin McHale) she's really into him and "wants to get him in a stroller." Artie is now allowed to tell people they are dating, essentially in return for being her duet partner.
Sam tells Finn he thinks Kurt is talented and he actually wants to sing with him. Finn tries to convince him to "lay low" and not sing with another man. Sam responds he "gave him my word" and immediately upon leaving, the locker room is covered with slushy. Quinn (Dianna Agron) helps clean Sam off and they seem to hit it off.
Kurt is taking care of Burt (Mike O'Malley) as he recovers, helping to keep him resting and avoiding bad foods. Kurt tells him about Sam and Finn's request. Since Kurt doesn't know whether Sam is gay, Burt wonders if maybe Finn is right. Burt learned Kurt had been flirty with Finn and tells his son straight guys have difficult handling that well. Kurt responds it is difficult being the only openly gay guy in town.
Mercedes and Santana perform a rendition of Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High" which brings the house down.
Kurt pops in on Sam while he's in the shower. He tells Sam he should find somebody else to sing with, that he is "setting you free."
Rachel and Finn decide the way for them to lose is sing a bad, offensive song.
Tina asks Artie sing with her. Artie responds he has a partner and the relationship is developing into romance.
The next day Kurt tells Glee he is going to sing with the most talented member of the club -- himself. Wearing a suite cut down the middle (half white, half black) Kurt sings Victor/Victoria (1982)'s "Le Jazz Hot!" on his own.
Sam and Quinn discuss the possibility of a duet. He talks her through the choreography of a potential performance featuring his guitar. They almost kiss, but she stops him. She says this year needs to be all about her and she doesn't want to sing with him.
Tina and Mike do an entertaining and dance-heavy performance of A Chorus Line (1985)'s "Sing," a song about not being able to sing. This also goes over well with Will.
Finn confronts Sam about trying to kiss Quinn, a "major Glee party foul." He talks to Sam about singing with Quinn. Simultaneously, we see Rachel trying to convince Quinn to sing with Sam. It works. The next day, Quinn tells Sam she will do the duet.
During practice, Artie leaves in a huff. He says he still has feeling for Tina. Brittany responds by saying she wants to help him get over Tina. She puts him in her bed and they start to make out. "Before our duet, we're going to do it,' she tells him.
Rachel and Finn sing Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright's "With You I'm Born Again" with him dressed as a priest. Everyone hates it and Will says he's disappointed. They feign disappointment and Quinn and Sam take the stage. Sam and Quinn perform Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat's "Lucky."
Artie breaks up with Brittany. He thinks she used him for his voice and we see Santana was the one who planted this idea in his head. He thinks Brittany wasn't sensitive to the fact he had never had sex before, tells her he won't be her partner and he wheels away. She seems legitimately sorry.
Will puts the competition to a vote. Basically everyone voted for themselves, but the winners "by two votes" are Sam and Quinn.
Rachel takes Kurt aside and tells him they are going to win nationals because of him and he isn't alone. She asks if he'd like to sing a duet with her even though the competition is over.
At dinner, Sam tells Quinn he thinks she's brave for coming back to school. He admits he's been dying his hair and she tells him they aren't using Will's voucher since this is going to be their first date.
Kurt and Rachel sing Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland's mash-up of "Happy Days Are Here Again" and "Get Happy."
