When The Whole Movie Should've Ended Up On The Cutting Room Floor...
nylecavazosgarcia29 January 2022
Where to start...? The positives are the running time is short, even though the film feels excruciatingly long. The image quality is decent, even though everything happening behind and in front of the camera is utterly worthless. A group of teenagers staying at a cabin in the woods is the ideal set-up for a low budget horror film, but this movie literally gets everything wrong because it doesn't know what it wants to be. It's not horror, it's just horrific. The actors are not performers, at least not very convincing ones. And the filmmakers are not storytellers, at least not very cohesive ones. Even the film's title "Honeycomb," which sounds intriguing and promising, is ruined the moment you see it on screen in a shockingly cheap and bad stop-motion opening title sequence using Play-Doh. And the film only gets worse from there.

Ah cool! Someone made a simulator for sitting at the food court eating pad Thai and listening to sexy teenagers talk about farting!!! Garbage trash fire not worth your time or money.

Honeycomb

Warning: Spoilers
Leader (Destini Stewart), Willow (Sophie Bawks-Smith), Jules (Jillian Frank), Vicky (Mari Geraghty) and Millie (Rowan Wales) have gone all Lord of the Flies Canada edition and leave behind parents and boyfriends to live in the woods all on their own with their own rules and things go about exactly as well as you'd expect when five teenage girls lose their minds.

The girls live under a rule of suitable revenge, which means if someone upsets you, you get to go after them with all the force and madness that an 18-year-old girl who has never left home before can muster which is a metric ton if you were worried about the conversion.

First-time director Avalon Fast and co-writer Emmett Roiko have put together an interesting script, but the performances are stilted and near-student level -- I love reading reviews that claim this is intended and makes it a better movie, film people will forgive anything -- while the editing is not the best and the sound quality is borderline static at best in some scenes. That said, there are moments that look gorgeous, which stand out and make you wish the same care was delivered throughout the movie.

That said, I do love parts of this, like the letters the girls write to loved ones before they leave, like Leader telling her boyfriend, "When I want you, I'll come get you." This feels like trial run -- like your teen years -- for something better, remembering the rough edges yet knowing how to imbue them with the honey of experience.

Can't wait to see what happens next.

"Sugar, Oh, honey, honey."

Warning: Spoilers
After finding Por favor no me abandones (2021-also reviewed) to be a disappointing opening title to the Cine-Excess Film Festival,I started to hope that my second viewing of the night would sweeten the mood up, by taking a bite of some honeycomb.

View on the film:

Placing a note at the end of the credits thanking the cast and crew for working on the title over the Summer, the writing/editing/ directing debut of Avalon Fast sadly never shakes off the vibe of being put together from home movies that have been left to gather dust in the attic.

Blasting The Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever, the movie fails to offer anything sweet, instead laying out a sour atmosphere of clunky editing, over- saturated colours to the point where the screen appears to be covered in red mash, dire-log which crashes to the ground like a dead-weight, and the dab of Horror from the sliver of revenge, being brushed away undeveloped, with honeycomb.
