‘Fall Guy’ star Emily Blunt has entered into early negotiations to join the cast of Steven Spielberg’s next film for Universal Pictures and Amblin.
Plot details are locked down but the movie is described as a two-hander, so Blunt would be playing one of the leads in the project. Based on a story by Spielberg, the film has his longtime collaborator David Koepp penning the script, with Kristie Macosko Krieger producing.

It’s been a tough time for the movie business.
The 2023 actors and writers strikes brought production to a standstill, leaving studios with fewer films to release in theaters. That’s bad news for cinemas, which are struggling to dig out from the financial hole left by Covid shutdowns and laboring to get audiences to visit the multiplexes at the numbers they were before the pandemic. Add to that a series of commercial disappointments, such as “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “The Fall Guy” and “If,” and the industry is off to a very rough start to the summer movie season, a time of year when the box office is supposed to be booming.
Michael O’Leary, the president of the National Association of Theater Owners, knows that the cinema operators he represents through his trade group have been through a lot. But he also believes that things are turning around,...

Emily Blunt’s stars are clearly aligning, as evidenced by her recent stellar performance in Oppenheimer, which has left her enjoying her first Oscar nomination. But could her next artistic venture be just as enthralling? Yes, indeed!
With Deadline’s recent reports, excitement grows as it is revealed that Blunt may appear in another cinematic gem—a forthcoming UFO project helmed by none other than the legendary Steven Spielberg for Universal Pictures. This film, envisioned by Spielberg, written by the talented David Koepp of Jurassic Park fame and produced by Kristie Macosko Krieger, is shaping up to be a must-see “two-hander” spectacle.

Steven Spielberg Blunt hit incoming? Quite possibly, folks! As we reported last month, the legendary Jaws filmmaker is returning to summer blockbuster territory with a new "event movie" for Universal and Amblin in 2026. And whilst details on the project have remained very hush-hush thus far, we now know at least one of the actors Spielberg has in mind to star. According to Deadline, The Fall Guy's Emily Blunt, who's currently hard at work on A24's The Smashing Machine with Dwayne Johnson, is in talks to star in the film.
Long-time Spielberg collaborators David Koepp and Kristie Macosko Krieger are respectively set to write and produce the movie, vaguely described as a two-hander. Blunt then, presumably, would be one of said hands, though the exact nature of the Oscar nominated Oppenheimer actor's prospective role in the film remains, like much else thus far, a mystery. That being said, Variety...

The Fall Guy was an early Eighties TV show that followed the adventures and misadventures of a stuntman who moonlighted as a bounty hunter. It was one of a whole slew of shows like The Dukes Of Hazzard and The A-Team where a quantity of loveable rogues, often with a good car, met and then vanquished a villain every week. Glen A Larson, who created the original series, would revisit that formula again and again.

Emily Blunt is in early talks to star in Steven Spielberg’s next film.
The movie, like all of Spielberg’s productions, is shrouded in secrecy, but it is an “event film,” so think special effects and vast scope. It’s based on a story that Spielberg conceived and boasts a screenplay from David Koepp, who wrote “Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Universal Pictures will release the film wide on Friday, May 15, 2026.
Blunt is coming off an Oscar-nominated turn as the alcoholic wife of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” as well as “The Fall Guy,” an action-comedy that was well-received by critics, but failed to ignite at the box office. She’s no stranger to massive productions, having previously starred in the likes of “Edge of Tomorrow” (going toe-to-toe with Tom Cruise) and “Into the Woods.

Back in January, Universal Pictures made a surprising announcement: not only did they have a new Jurassic World movie in development, but the screenplay – by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, returning to the franchise for the first time since The Lost World: Jurassic Park – had already been written, and the movie was on the fast track to production. Soon after, we learned that it’s aiming for a July 2, 2025 theatrical release. The project has been assembled in a mad scramble over the last five months. At one point, The Fall Guy director David Leitch was in talks to direct, but he had a different vision than Universal was looking forward, so they turned to Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. And with Edwards at the helm, the movie officially went into production today, filming in Thailand.
According to Variety, the new Jurassic World movie will be filming in Thailand through July 16th,...

George Miller’s Furiosa may be struggling in cinemas, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ultimately make money for Warner Bros. A few thoughts on the modern approach to box office reporting:
There’s a sense of ‘here we again’, as headlines emerge about George Miller’s latest movie, Furiosa.
Off the back of terrific reviews, the fifth film in the Mad Max saga arrived in cinemas with the promise of a sixth movie – The Borderlands – ready to go. George Miller said as much in his collection of pre-release interviews, the assumption being that Warner Bros would fire the starting gun should Furiosa’s box office receipts be solid enough.
Yet, as you likely know, the numbers aren’t looking good. The chances of Mad Max 6 are beginning to look incredibly slim.

After the recent soaring success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, from a screenplay by Chris Bremner & Will Beall, the anticipation for the fifth installment is as electric as the chases down Miami’s palm-lined streets. It is obvious that this universe still has untold stories waiting to be told, echoing the thoughts of the leading actors themselves, who recently expressed their appreciation for the fifth movie’s potential.

Whenever a Sony movie comes in at No. 1, Tom Rothman drives his 1967 Ford Mustang to the Culver City lot and leaves it parked in front of the Thalberg building. But on Monday, there was a hitch after Bad Boys: Ride or Die opened to a victorious $56.5 million at the domestic box office: the red beauty wouldn’t start.
The chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group spent more than an hour tinkering and looking under the hood, but he gave up and decided against calling Aaa. Making an acting debut at the age of 13, Ryan Gosling began his career with kid-friendly roles such as The Mickey Mouse Club before branching off into the likes of Are You Afraid of the Dark, while still a child actor. A crime thriller, The Believer, marked his breakthrough role in 2001 and sent him off on a journey that would see him play versatile roles across dozens of genres.
However, he would still venture into the more serious side of cinema with new roles, even as light-hearted ones kept coming.

The shuffling between these two modes of acting continued until he starred as Ken for Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-nominated flick, Barbie. Drenched in pink and helming a character that resonated with viewers across all ages, the role held a particularly personal importance for the actor.

No, it's not the early 2000s. Be that as it may, not one but two "Lord of the Rings" movies found themselves comfortably in the top 10 at the box office this past weekend. Indeed, thanks to a re-release of Peter Jackson's much-beloved trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy saga by Fathom Events, both "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" managed to sneak past "The Strangers: Chapter 1" to make it onto the charts.
"Fellowship of the Ring" found itself at number eight over the weekend with a $2.45 million haul, just behind "The Fall Guy" ($2.59 million). Landing at number nine was "The Two Towers," which pulled in $1.9 million. Warner Bros. and Fathom released both films on just over 1,500 screens. What's more, these were the 4K remastered, extended editions of the films, meaning they clocked in at nearly four hours each. Plus, they played just once each day across the country,...

After working as an actor on shows like Sons of Anarchy and Veronica Mars, Taylor Sheridan bravely took a path toward realizing his creative potential and ended up in the writer’s chair. And what a transition it has been! His remarkable evolution blossomed with Sicario’s gripping screenplay, a brilliant example of his storytelling prowess.
The 2015 action-thriller, helmed by the visionary Denis Villeneuve, not only set a milestone for 21st-century cinema but also served as a vehicle for Emily Blunt’s powerful portrayal of Kate Mercer, an FBI agent waging a relentless battle against the drug cartels.
Still from Sicario (2015) | Lionsgate
Deeply grounded in reality, Blunt’s character was inspired by a formidable real-life figure, mirroring Sheridan’s quest for authentic, multi-dimensional storytelling. You may be surprised to learn that the studio actually considered casting a man in the role before The Fall Guy actress was chosen.

Something normal happened at Netflix. “Hit Man,” a well-reviewed film from a top director (Richard Linklater) and a hot star (Glen Powell) in an audience-friendly action title, debuted as #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list.
Something very weird happened at the same time. “Godzilla Minus One,” which had a long-delayed appearance in home formats, made it to #1 both at Netflix and on VOD ($5.99 rental) in its first week. By week two, it fell to #6 at Netflix, while dropping from the top spot at iTunes to #7.
Netflix acquired “Hit Man” for $20 million last year when it premiered at Venice and Toronto to great interest. Reviewed (82 Metacritic) at the level or ahead of most of the streamer’s late-year awards-bait films, the action comedy about a moonlighting professor working undercover for New Orleans police has been #1 for the last three days. Unlike most Netflix originals, does it have staying power?

When the summer was in need of saving, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett came to the rescue. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited on screen over the weekend in "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," the fourth installment of the long-running franchise, serving as a sequel to 2020's "Bad Boys for Life." Much has happened in the four years since that movie came out but one important thing hasn't changed: people really love these characters. As such, the new movie easily topped the box office with an impressive global debut.
"Ride or Die" opened to $56.5 million domestically, which was above weekend estimates. It was a little below the $62.5 million that "Bad Boys for Life" opened to in 2020 but that movie also opened in January when there is generally far less competition. Not to mention the pandemic that forever changed moviegoing habits of the general public. So the fact that the sequel...

The buzziest moment of Saturday Night Live‘s recently concluded 49th season faced no shortage of hurdles in getting to the screen — and actually was several years in the making.
During Ryan Gosling’s return to NBC’s long-running late night sketch comedy series on April 13 for his third time as host, he and castmember Mikey Day played two attendees at a NewsNation taping who happen to be dead ringers for Beavis and Butt-Head, respectively, the slacker teens who debuted in 1993 on the Mike Judge-created MTV cartoon series.
SNL makeup department head Louie Zakarian and hair designer Jodi Mancuso recall Day and head writer Streeter Seidell working on a version of the sketch circa 2018 that ultimately was cut for time from the live show and never quite clicked. The sketch got a second shot when it was picked for the Oscar Isaac-hosted 2022 episode but cut before production began. Luckily,...

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock’s electrifying bus-set thriller acts as a reminder of just how good we used to have it
At a time of overwhelming entertainment bloat – budget, length, content, discussion – a ride back to the summer of 1994 and the brisk, brilliant economy of Speed feels like the satisfying small-screen vacation we all deserve right now.
Dutch cinematographer turned director Jan de Bont’s breath-stealing action movie hasn’t gained any extra depth or allegorical meaning when rewatched 30 years later (it’s mercifully thinkpiece-proof in its earnest straightforwardness) but it has benefited from a bleak comparison with where Hollywood is at this precarious moment. It’s been a mostly bummer summer at the box office with a panic over expensive big-bet films like The Fall Guy and Furiosa stumbling while the majority who choose streaming instead having to settle for murky, poorly made dreck like Atlas, a much-watched yet much-loathed Netflix night-ruiner.

Despite big stars such as Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling having blockbuster releases this year, the first half of 2024 seems to be a lackluster year for Hollywood. The industry has seen many sure-shot films bomb at the box office this year. While Dune: Part Two remains the highest-grossing film of the year, it was released in March.
Films such as The Fall Guy and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which were touted to be huge hits have all taken a huge loss at the box office, making studios reconsider their strategies. Making it worse is the success of small-budget films such as Tarot, which has become the year’s most profitable film with a $45 million box office against an $8 million budget.

Good news for those Bad Boys: audiences are still ride or die for the exploits of Mike and Marcus. That’s reflected in the opening weekend box office figures for the buddy-action franchise’s fourth instalment, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, which saw Will Smith and Martin Lawrence draw in an impressive haul – earning over $100 million worldwide. In a stuttering summer, with major movies like Furiosa and The Fall Guy underperforming, that’s a significant success; particularly considering Bad Boys doesn’t sit on the CGI-heavy mega-spectacle end of the blockbuster spectrum.
Bad Boys: Ride Or Die earned $56 million at the US box office, and added $48 million from across the rest of the world, all adding up to an opening weekend of $104 million. That’s significantly higher than the opening haul for The Fall Guy (around $65 million), and Furiosa (roughly $59 million). The film is directed by Adil & Bilall – who...

Yet again, a new title has claimed the top spot of the box-office weekend as Bad Boys: Ride or Die debuted a whopping $46 million ahead of its nearest competition.
In its first weekend of release, Bad Boys: Ride or Die brought in $56.0 million for Sony Pictures Releasing, easily capturing the number one spot of the box-office weekend top ten. This was enough to relegate last weekend’s top film, The Garfield Movie, to a distant second place where it made $10.0 million for Sony Pictures Releasing, lifting its two-week total to $68.6 million. Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures saw If drop to third place where it took in $8.0 million over the weekend, giving the film a four-week total of $93.5 million. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” gave the box office a desperately needed jolt, but the action-comedy fourquel can’t salvage the summer season by itself.
Although the newest “Bad Boys,” reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami cops, arrived on the higher end of expectations with $56 million in domestic ticket sales, the year-to-date deficit actually grew more pronounced. Heading into the weekend, ticket sales were 24% behind 2023 and now overall revenues are lagging by 26% according to Comscore.
“Bad Boys 4” isn’t to blame for the decline; analysts believe it’s the lack of enthusiasm for other titles in the marketplace. Four of the other top five releases — Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” ($10 million), Paramount’s fantasy comedy “If” ($8 million), the Warner Bros. supernatural thriller and fellow newcomer “The Watchers” ($7.4 million) and Disney and 20th Century’s sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($5.4 million) — brought in scraps.

Theaters will live to fight another day. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) provided more than half of the gross this weekend, taking #1 with $56 million. That isn’t a record for the franchise (with previous films at lower ticket prices), but it is a critical victory for the industry at a time it desperately needs them.
Will Smith’s first wide release since his catastrophic Oscar behavior in 2022 represents a triumph for star power, franchise filmmaking, action titles, and titles that draw from minority audiences (over two thirds for the weekend were Black and Latino). Most of all, it was a vital sign that underperformance for highly touted summer films isn’t a given.
In the face of rising industry panic, an under-$40 million opening for “Ride or Die” (its 2020 predecessor opened to $62 million) could have ratched the doom and despair to toxic levels. Instead, it blew past tracking projections...

In the face of rising industry panic, an under-$40 million opening for “Ride or Die” (its 2020 predecessor opened to $62 million) could have ratched the doom and despair to toxic levels. Instead, it blew past tracking projections...

The first full weekend of June brought a modicum of hope to the summer box office, as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for the fourth installment of their popular “Bad Boys” action-comedy franchise. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” had been planned since 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” became the highest-grossing blockbuster that year, partially due to Covid shutting down theaters a few weeks after its release. Opening in 3,885 theaters, including IMAX and other premium screens, “Ride or Die” received mixed reviews with 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it was expected to be fairly review-proof with the popularity of its two stars. It ended up making $5.88 million in Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, and $21.6 million on Friday, including those previews.
Sony is estimating it to make $56 million in North America its opening weekend, which is less than the previous movie’s $62.5 million holiday opening,...

In a summer full of movies underperforming at the box office, the old-fashioned star power of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence propelled Bad Boys: Ride or Die to a strong start this weekend with a $56 million opening. That’s at least $10 million more than even the most optimistic box office predictions (we predicted way less) and a strong rebound for Will Smith, whose box office prowess has been in question ever since the infamous Oscar slap seemingly hurt his brand.
Whatever the case, audiences seemed more than willing to embrace the star again. The Bad Boys four-quel posted the franchise’s second-biggest opening, following Bad Boys For Life, which started with $62 million in 2020. While some might view that as a bit of a comedown, let’s not forget that the business in movie theatres was much healthier in the pre-pandemic days. With not much competition for adult audiences until A...

Updated: Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die pummeled pre-weekend opening projections, coming in with a $104.6M global bow, including $48.6M from the international box office. While the overseas debut is slightly off 2020’s Bad Boys for Life which did $50.3M in like-for-like offshore markets at today’s exchange rates, that film had strong legs. Either way, Ride or Die‘s start gave some much needed oomph to summer turnstiles. Its launch is 58% bigger than Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The Will Smith/Martin Lawrence reteam from directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah was driven overseas by Europe with $19.3M across the region. It set new regional records for the Bad Boys franchise in Latin America and the Middle East with $10M and $9.5M, respectively.
Of the 60 markets released this session, the UK leads with $4.9M (+ 31% over Furiosa). Mexico was next with $4.2M, followed by Germany at $3.7M (2.5x...

Turns out, Bad Boys are good for ticket sales.
Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth entry in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led buddy cop series, started strong with $56 million from 3,885 theaters in its domestic debut. The film also opened at the international box office with $48.6 million, bringing its worldwide tally to $104.6 million.
The sequel to 1995’s “Bad Boys,” 2003’s “Bad Boys II” and 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” is notable as Smith’s first major film to grace the big screen since he assaulted Chris Rock on stage at the 2022 Oscars. So what should Hollywood take away from “Bad Boys” in its fourth go-around? Well, audiences haven’t soured on Smith — though it helps that he returned to theaters in a time-tested and generally well-received franchise.
Although it’s not cementing any franchise records (“Bad Boys for Life” remains the biggest opening of the quartet...

The boys are back in town. Sony and Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” got off to a solid start at the box office with $21.6 million from 3,885 locations across Friday and preview screenings. The movie also gets a revenue boost from Imax and other premium large format auditoriums.
The action sequel, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is now looking at an opening of $53 million through the three-day frame in North America. Sony had initially projected a debut of $30 million heading into the weekend, going way below industry estimates of $45 million to $50 million. The studio seems to have made a cautious lowball, considering “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” have given the summer box office a run of high-profile titles debuting below expectations.
