As the competition series that revived the career and public image of Donald Trump, The Apprentice might be the most impactful -- and infamous -- reality show in TV history.
Seventeen years after it wrapped up its original run, the NBC series still occupies a surprisingly large place in our national consciousness.
In fact, it's the basis for an upcoming book by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh and a new movie from director Ali Abbasi.
The book will be available on June 18, and the movie will be in a theater near you on -- well, that's not quite clear.
You see, Abbasi's film -- aptly titled The Apprentice -- has yet to secure a distribution deal in the US.
With hot-button subject matter and an all-star cast that includes Sebastian Stan as Trump and Succession's Jeremy Strong as the infamous McCarthyite attorney Roy Cohn, it's the sort of film that...

Exclusive: Director Cameron Van Hoy has entered production on The Prince, a new feature drama penned by Pulitzer Prize winner and Oscar nominee David Mamet. Scott Haze (Old Henry) leads a starry ensemble that also includes Nicolas Cage (Pig), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Giancarlo Esposito (Parish) and Andy Garcia (Ocean’s Eleven).
The Prince chronicles an addict’s tumultuous odyssey through the high-stakes world of power, pleasure, and pain on a transformative journey toward recovery.
While unconfirmed, we’re told by multiple sources close to the project that the lead character Parker, played by Haze, is inspired at least in part by Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, whose abuse of drugs and alcohol is well documented — including in his 2021 memoir Beautiful Things — and who was found guilty Tuesday in Delaware of three felony counts related to the purchase of a gun in 2018.

“I think it’s time to make movies relevant,” said Ali Abbasi to the cheering crowd at the May 20 Cannes premiere of his Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice. “It’s time to make movies political again.”
Hollywood doesn’t seem to be listening. Despite the enthusiastic response to The Apprentice internationally — the film, starring Sebastian Stan as Trump and Succession’s Jeremy Strong as his master-of-the-dark-arts political mentor Roy Cohn, has been sold in nearly every territory — the movie is still struggling to land a U.S. distributor. That’s despite, as Abbasi calls it, this fall’s “promotional event, the U.S. election,” that would seem to provide an ideal launchpad, and plenty of free publicity, for any domestic distributor.
A U.S. deal for The Apprentice is complicated by the fact that Kinematics, the company backed by pro-Trump billionaire Dan Snyder, put up equity for the film against...

Something normal happened at Netflix. “Hit Man,” a well-reviewed film from a top director (Richard Linklater) and a hot star (Glen Powell) in an audience-friendly action title, debuted as #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list.
Something very weird happened at the same time. “Godzilla Minus One,” which had a long-delayed appearance in home formats, made it to #1 both at Netflix and on VOD ($5.99 rental) in its first week. By week two, it fell to #6 at Netflix, while dropping from the top spot at iTunes to #7.
Netflix acquired “Hit Man” for $20 million last year when it premiered at Venice and Toronto to great interest. Reviewed (82 Metacritic) at the level or ahead of most of the streamer’s late-year awards-bait films, the action comedy about a moonlighting professor working undercover for New Orleans police has been #1 for the last three days. Unlike most Netflix originals, does it have staying power?

The MCU has grown big with 33 movies and many TV shows. Lately, the quality seems to be dropping. But still, it’s clear that the MCU has made some top-notch superhero movies.
Fans on Ranker voted for their favorites, with over 200,000 votes. The list has some unexpected picks and some you’d totally anticipate.
10. ‘Black Widow’ (2021)
‘Black Widow’ came out after Natasha’s character had already met her tragic end, prompting fans to rush to theaters to bid her farewell in her standalone movie. The film was largely liked, featuring great action scenes and a strong supporting cast. However, much attention was drawn to Johansson’s legal battle with the studio over its early release on Disney+. Despite these issues, ‘Black Widow’ managed to secure a spot in the top 10, which is somewhat surprising considering the circumstances.

MCU so far spans 33 movies and numerous TV shows, as the universe keeps expanding the quality of movies and other projects generally seems to have declined in recent years.
However, despite these recent changes, it’s an undeniable fact that the MCU has given us some of the best superhero movies in the history of the genre. Luckily, fans gathered on Ranker with over 200,000 votes and picked Crème de la crème movies of the MCU. Some placements are surprising, while some are exactly where you would expect them.
10. ‘Black Widow’ (2021)
‘Black Widow’ was released after Natasha already tragically passed away, so fans hurried to theaters to “say goodbye” to the character in her final and standalone movie. The movie was generally received well with brilliant action sequences and a stellar supporting cast. However, it was mostly marked by Johansson’s lawsuit against the studio for releasing the movie on Disney+ too soon.

2024 is turning out to be a fresh breath of year for films, as it appears, mainstream Hollywood might be once again leaning towards original releases. From Challengers to Civil War, we’ve witnessed some exciting original releases in the past few months, and Glen Powell’s new action comedy Hit Man is the new addition to this summer’s slate.
Sitting at a whopping 97% on the Tomatometer, the film has further added to Powell’s reputation as the next big thing in Hollywood, but making this film a reality was a bumpy ride for its creator.

Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc is looking dapper as hell in this new look at "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery," Rian Johnson's latest murder mystery that continues the adventures of the private detective after "Knives Out" and "Glass Onion." The topline instant takeaway is obviously that Blanc has much longer hair than he's had in the previous two films, and that new look could potentially signal a new attitude or maybe even a whole new worldview for this character. Could a shaggier-haired Blanc be a bit more laid back and bohemian this time around? Perhaps he's been hanging out with his pal Derol from "Glass Onion" in between movies and taken some life lessons from the amiable slacker.

When the original Knives Out movie was released by Lionsgate in 2019, the whodunnit starring Daniel Craig as the southern P.E. Benoit Blanc, was either doomed to fail or become a smashing success. The latter happened, as the ensemble cast full of big names made Knives Out one of the best films of the year, ending up with numerous accolades and nominations, with many going so far as to claim that it had revived the whodunnit genre. The sequel, Glass Onion, was also well-received, but more because of its political and social messages than for the plot, which was more or less feeble and unworthy of the original. But, what is important is that Glass Onion also featured an ensemble cast, and it seems that the upcoming third movie, Wake Up Dead Man, will also follow in these footsteps.

Despite big stars such as Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling having blockbuster releases this year, the first half of 2024 seems to be a lackluster year for Hollywood. The industry has seen many sure-shot films bomb at the box office this year. While Dune: Part Two remains the highest-grossing film of the year, it was released in March.
Films such as The Fall Guy and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which were touted to be huge hits have all taken a huge loss at the box office, making studios reconsider their strategies. Making it worse is the success of small-budget films such as Tarot, which has become the year’s most profitable film with a $45 million box office against an $8 million budget.

Warner Bros.’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and A24’s Civil War have both gotten off to a slow start at China’s box office. Furiosa, the first movie of George Miller’s Mad Max saga to be released theatrically in China, opened in sixth place with $3.7 million over the country’s Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend as a batch of local releases dominated ticket sales. Alex Garland’s Civil War, meanwhile, debuted to just $2.4 million for eighth place, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Civil War, made for about $50 million, was already an international hit with $69 million in total ticket revenue in North America and $114 million worldwide. But Miller’s Furiosa certainly could have used a bigger boost from China, as its $144 million total at the global box offices still lags behind its hefty $168 million production budget. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” enjoyed one day at the top of the mainland China box office before being deposed by a crop of local new releases that opened in time for the Dragon Boat holiday. “Civil War” performed even more slowly.
China’s Friday to Sunday weekend box office saw “Be My Friend” score $8.1 million (RMB57.7 million), albeit earned over just two days. That put it ahead of “Walk the Line” in second place with $7.8 million (RMB55.6 million) and “Crisis Negotiators,” with $5.8 million (RMB40.9 million), according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway.
“The Garfield Movie,” which had a two-day run the previous weekend, slipped from second place to fourth. It scored $5.4 million (RMB38.0 million) for a nine-day cumulative of $15.2 million in China. Fifth place over the latest weekend chart was taken by the two-day performance of “Gold or Shit,” with $4.8 million.

One deleted moment in Captain America: Civil War could have ruined the entire arc of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. In an earlier draft of the movie, Tony Stark makes a statement that implies that he and Pepper Potts are having a baby. While the characters eventually have a baby in the MCU, it happens much later in the films. Stark’s very young daughter served as one of the biggest emotional factors in Iron Man’s final appearance.

Alex Garland’s Civil War is coming to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this July: more details on the release here.
A bit of a surprise this. Entertainment Film Distributors don’t put out too many films these days, and certainly hasn’t supported the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray physical disc format before. Its maiden release on the format is going to be a fine one though: Alex Garland’s Civil War, which proved a success in cinemas earlier this year.
Boasting an ensemble led by Kirsten Dunst, the film was written and directed by Garland, and has clearly resonated, heading past $100m at the global box office. The movie, as you may well know, is quite a rage-filled piece of work, an entirely fictional piece about a divided America tearing itself apart. Thank the lord for the escapism of the movies.

No one could’ve predicted just how massive The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would become in the last decade. Due to Bethesda’s incredible attention to detail, and continuous hard work, the fifth entry in the ever-popular franchise became an iconic game that has defined an entire generation of gamers.
While Skyrim has brought many interesting characters and storylines, what you might not know is that Bethesda had to cut a large portion out before the game’s release. A few years ago, Todd Howard touched upon Skyrim‘s development, and legacy, while talking about his biggest regret that led to the Civil War between the Stormcloaks, and the Empire being heavily watered down.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck once appeared in a couple of movies together during the first phase of their relationship. But Kirsten Dunst believed this had an unwanted impact regarding celebrity couples in movies.
How Kirsten Dunst felt ‘Gigli’ affected making movies with her own partner Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez | Christopher Polk/Getty Images
Gigli came out during a particular low-point in Affleck’s career. A few of his movies weren’t doing too well at the time, and his relationship with Lopez was being scrutinized in the media. Gigli didn’t help matters, either. The Martin Best-directed comedy film saw Lopez and Affleck collaborating for the first time. Because of the attention their relationship was generating with the media, some felt this would’ve translated into box-office success.
But the theory couldn’t have been more wrong, and Gigli just opened Affleck and Lopez up to more criticism.

1992's "Alien 3" was advertised with the tagline "The B*tch is Back" and the new trailer for the upcoming "Alien: Romulus" implicitly carries that same promise. True, original "Alien" protagonist Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is nowhere to be seen, but a new crew of future victims has a Xenomorph infestation to deal with.
This trailer proves that, for better or worse, director Fede Álvarez knows his sh*t when it comes to "Alien." Based on this two-minute preview, a group of young people — headlined by Rain Carradine — break into an abandoned space station, hoping that whatever is inside can buy them a better life. Instead, they stumble onto hibernating facehuggers that soon get loose. Things predictably go downhill.
This sounds like a streamlined version of the original 1979 "Alien," where the Nostromo investigated a crashed alien ship and brought the Xenomorph back onto theirs. The set design and imagery of "Romulus" echoes the original too,...

A little over one decade after delivering their bold and blood-soaked entry of the Evil Dead franchise, director/co-writer Fede Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are bringing their scary good talents to a place where no one can hear you scream in 20th Century Studios' new film Alien: Romulus, and the offical trailer and poster have now been unveiled ahead of the movie's anticipated August 16th theatrical release, offering a chilling look at plenty of Facehugger frights and Xenomorph mayhem:
“Alien: Romulus” takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. The film stars Cailee Spaeny (“Civil War”), David Jonsson (“Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy”), Archie Renaux (“Shadow and Bone”), Isabela Merced (“The Last of Us”), Spike Fearn (“Aftersun”), Aileen Wu.

As we've previously discussed, this summer movie season is surprisingly light on franchise fare.
That's partially due to the strikes that shut down Hollywood for much of the year, and partially due to the fact that superhero flicks just aren't packing 'em in like they used to.
But if you're a fan of sequels and nostalgia, fear not! Ridley Scott's Alien saga will be returning to theaters in August!
Yes, Alien: Romulus is set for release on August 16.
Scott is still on board as executive producer, but there's a new writer-director at the helm in the form of Evil Dead and Don't Breathe horror-meister Fede Alvarez.
Earlier today, 20th Century Studios dropped a press release, along with a trailer that's giving us some serious heebie-jeebies.

The “Alien” franchise is going back to basics with “Alien: Romulus.” A new trailer makes it clear that writer-director Fede Álvarez is emphasizing the claustrophobic sci-fi horror of a spaceship overrun by vicious aliens, like Ridley Scott’s 1979 film that started it all.
“Alien: Romulus” is set between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens,” and follows a group of young space colonizers who, while on a scavenging run on a seemingly abandoned space station, encounter a terrifying alien presence. The intense trailer shows off facehuggers, chestbursters, and references to earlier “Alien” films.
The film is led by Cailee Spaeny (“Civil War”), who is taking the Sigourney Weaver-type role, as seen by her recreation of the iconic image of the xenomorph in Weaver’s face. The cast also includes David Jonsson (“Industry”), Archie Renaux (“Shadow and Bone”), Isabela Merced (“Madame Web”), Spike Fearn (“Back to Black”), and newcomer Aileen Wu.

In weiteren Rollen spielen David Jonsson („Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy“), Archie Renaux („Shadow and Bone: Legenden der Grisha“), Isabela Merced („The Last of Us“) und Spike Fearn („Aftersun”).

If I lived in the "Alien" universe, the last thing I'd ever do is step foot on a mysteriously empty spacecraft. Or heck, leave Earth at all; it seems there's little out there in the cosmos besides Xenomorph hive after Xenomorph hive. Space is terrifying enough as is and with bug-looking rape/murder monsters thrown in? Pass.
However, the main characters in "Alien: Romulus" doe not share my trepidation. The official synopsise says the film follows a crew of colonists who, while salvaging supplies from an abandoned space station, discover that it's hosting Xenomorphs. The film's newest trailer does nothing to disabuse the presumption that this is going to end poorly for them.
"Romulus" is set between the 1979 original "Alien" and 1986 sequel "Aliens." The film's set design evokes the steamy, factory look of "Alien". Stan Winston's effects team from "Aliens" was also recruited to create this movie's monsters practically.

Keep your big-budget extravaganzas and intellectual properties! These days, Hollywood actors are breathlessly lining up to join the Benoit Blanc Cinematic Universe. Ever since Rian Johnson singled-handedly revived the big screen whodunnit with 2019's "Knives Out," the mid-budget murder-mystery series has become the hottest destination for rising stars, A-listers, and under-sung veterans of the industry to flex their acting muscles as the various colorful characters that occupy this world. Even the property's shift from the theatrical market to the streaming landscape three years later with Netflix's "Glass Onion" wasn't enough to deter folks from flocking to these movies like they're the next "Dune" sequel.
Following the announcement of Johnson's third "Knives Out Mystery" last month (now officially titled "Wake Up Dead Man"), it's become a daily guessing game trying to figure out who will sign on to match wits with Daniel Craig's sharp-witted Southern sleuth Blanc next.

For the first time ever, a film streaming on Netflix (free for subscribers) and available on VOD ($5.99 for 48 hours) is #1 on both charts.
Toho’s late-2023 sleeper success and eventual Oscar Visual Effects winner, “Godzilla Minus One” achieved that feat with a totally unexpected and previously unannounced release on Saturday.
The film, released in early December to an unexpected U.S./Canada gross of $56 million, normally would have hit PVOD for rental for $19.99 by late January, been reduced to $5.99 after a few weeks, then found a streaming home. But because of vaguely defined agreements with Legendary Entertainment, Toho’s partner in making Warner Bros.’ costlier Godzilla films, the March opening of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” led to the early-February termination of theatrical dates for “Minus One.” That came despite the Toho film still doing business (and ahead of the Oscars). Then, Warner’s “Godzilla x Kong” could play without “Minus One” as competition.

Marvel had a rough year in 2023. Many of its properties underperformed, and they lost their big villain due to Jonathan Majors being fired. Looking forward to their upcoming slate, comic fans have been excited about some of the studio’s projects over the next few years. Will these films help Marvel regain control? The upcoming Thunderbolts film has been one that fanboys have been hoping to see since the MCU started. With some recent news about the property coming up, it seems like the right time to break down what we know about the production.
Who Are The Thunderbolts?
The team first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1997 in an issue of The Incredible Hulk. They seemed to be a new group of superheroes that had arrived on the scene and gained acclaim very quickly. The reader was informed that the group was actually a group of supervillains led by Baron Zemo.

Following his debut as Helmut Zemo in the 2017 film Captain America: Civil War, Daniel Brühl reprised his role in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier alongside Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie. At this rate, it would be more informative to report who isn’t in “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.”
Josh Brolin, most recently of “Dune: Part Two” and “Outer Range,” is the latest A-lister to join the cast of Rian Johnson’s next mystery movie, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The Academy Award nominee joins a very famous ensemble that already includes franchise star Daniel Craig, reprising his role as brilliant private detective Benoit Blanc, plus Josh O’Connor (“Challengers”), Cailee Spaeny (“Civil War”), Andrew Scott (“Ripley”), Kerry Washington (“Scandal”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Jeremy Renner (“Mayor of Kingstown”), and Mila Kunis (“Luckiest Girl Alive”).

Rian Johnson is collecting stars for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, like Hideo Kojima scanning celebrities for cameos in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the upcoming horror game Od. The third chapter of Johnson’s whodunit series, Wake Up Dead Man, finds Daniel Craig reprising the role of Detective Benoit Blanc with Josh O’ Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, and Mila Kunis rounding out the cast.

Quebecois filmmaker Denis Villeneuve should be running a victory lap after his sci-fi sequel “Dune: Part Two” earned over $700 million at the box office this year and after recently receiving the Academy Icon Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards on May 31, but the current lack of audiences showing up to movie theaters this summer is bringing him down.
Speaking to the press after receiving the award, Villeneuve said, “I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theater, and I’m not just talking about ‘Dune 2.’ Of course I’m talking about many movies. A movie like ‘Civil War,’ for instance, is a strong example of a movie that absolutely used the power of the theater. I was lucky that ‘Part Two’ did reach the audience, I wish it would happen more often, honestly.”

Denis Villeneuve is "disappointed" that 'Dune: Part Two' remains the highest-grossing film of 2024.The 56-year-old director's sci-fi epic is still the most successful film of the year despite being released in March and he thinks that it is a sad indictment of the film industry that none of the summer blockbusters have been able to surpass it.Speaking after receiving the Academy Icon Award at the Canadian Screen Awards, Denis said: "I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theatre, and I'm not just talking about 'Dune 2'. Of course I'm talking about many movies."A movie like 'Civil War', for instance, is a strong example of a movie that absolutely used the power of the theatre. I was lucky that 'Part 2' did reach the audience, I wish it would happen more often,...

This past Memorial Day Weekend – the unofficial start to summer – was a dismal one at the box office, with reports putting it as the worst turnout in decades. Topping the chart was Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga with around $32 million, just barely edging out Garfield. So what can be expected from the summer box office if this is how it’s going to kick off?
The month of May is when things tend to start picking up at the box office, with tentpole releases and franchise sequels flooding the screens in seemingly rapid succession. But The Fall Guy – which came out on May 3rd – didn’t land the way the studio wanted it and so now it’s available on streaming services, officially yanking its chances to grow at the box office. As it stands, Dune: Part Two – which arrived in March – is the highest-grossing movie of the year, which,...

After being released earlier this year, Dune: Part Two is still the biggest hit film of the year as of the time of writing, topping the global box office. Fans and critics are very satisfied, and the film promises to be one of the biggest contenders in the upcoming awards season, as Denis Villeneuve produced yet another hit film. The film has so far earned $711,844,358 at the global box office, ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4, both of which passed the $500 million mark. But, while Dune: Part Two can still be seen in some theaters, it is a movie that premiered almost four months ago (in February). Many new movies have been released in the meantime, but none of them managed to surpass Dune.

Mastermind filmmaker Denis Villeneuve surpassed absolutely all expectations that fans had of him by helming the Dune film series. It was made so immaculately that it turned into a mammoth-like distinctly successful franchise.
And yet, such tremendous success — especially at the global box offices — of the second installment of his book-based film series, seems to have rubbed the director the wrong way.

This comes after Villeneuve himself expressed his disappointment and one major regret about his Timothée Chalamet-starrer sequel to the 2021 masterpiece. Although, the movie has already conquered the box office with a remarkable victory that is yet to be surpassed by other projects this year.
But as unbelievable as it all may seem, the reason behind his regret and disappointment is actually only valid.

Denis Villeneuve is both humbled and a little disappointed that Dune: Part Two is still rocking at the box office.
While in Toronto Friday to receive the Academy Icon Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards, the director said he was “disappointed to still be number one. … I hope soon that there will be other successes at the box office. I hope, sooner or later, that this summer box office will be much better.”
Released on March 1, Dune: Part Two has grossed more than $711 million worldwide. It remains the top grossing movie of 2024, ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($567M).
“I think we need movies that are theatrical experiences, that will fully embrace the power of the theatre, and I’m not just talking about Dune 2,” Villeneuve went on to say. “Of course I’m talking about many movies. A movie like Civil War, for instance, is a...
