Three screenings at this year’s Göteborg festival will ‘transform the audience’s state of mind’ with a live hypnotist on stage
The Göteborg film festival is no stranger to stunts. It has previously featured screenings for a single audience member at a North Sea lighthouse, as well as “coffin screenings” in which lucky viewers were interred inside a sarcophagus to enhance their sensory empathy.
This year, festival directors are planning to put the entire audience under by hiring a hypnotist for three gala screenings. Ahead of Swedish premieres for Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Memoria, Shirin Neshat’s Land of Dreams and Christian Tafdrup’s Speak No Evil, a hypnotist will appear on stage to “transform the audience’s state of mind in accordance with the mood and theme of the film”.

Having isolated a film enthusiast on a North Sea lighthouse island in 2021, this year’s Göteborg Film Festival, Scandinavia’s biggest movie-tv event, looks set to stage another bold metaphor for film consumption, subjecting audiences at three different movie screenings to mass hypnosis.
Dubbed The Hypnotic Cinema, the strand’s titles chosen for the singular experiment are Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s 2021 Cannes Jury Prize winner “Memoria,” starring Tilda Swinton; “Land of Dreams,” from Iran’s Venice Silver Lion winners Shirin Neshat and Shoja Azari (“Women Without Men”) starring Sheila Vand, Matt Dillon and Isabella Rossellini; and Danish director Christian Tafdrup’s “Speak No Evil,” slated to world premiere at this month’s Sundance Festival.
Before each film, a hypnotist will perform a mass hypnosis from the main stage at the Stora Teatern in Göteborg, the festival announced Tuesday. Transforming the audience’s state of mind in accordance with the mood and theme of the film,...

When it comes to haunted houses we’ve seen it all near enough. From the psychology of Robert Wise’s The Haunting, to the playful macabre of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, to the shuddering realism of Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity, the jolts of James Wan’s The Conjuring, the fresh voice of Remi Weekes’ His House, and the ice cube down the spine chills and lingering emotions of J.A. Bayona’s The Orphanage. We have seen so many filmmakers craft so many different bumps in the night emanating from the home, and in Creep and Black Death director Christopher Smith’s The Banishing, we go back to the traditional British hauntings of old, which have recently been resurrected in films like The Woman in Black, When the Lights Went Out and An English Haunting.

Tafdrup wrote the screenplay with his brother Mads Tafdrup, the story follows a Danish family on vacation who become friends with a Dutch family, however they turn out to be something very different from what they initially pretend to be. Tafdrup previously directed Parents, which screened at Tribeca in 2016, and A Horrible Woman, which was a local box office success.

No, Hollywood legend Doris Day is not making her comeback in Clint Eastwood's next movie.
Strange rumours of a new film project for the 93-year-old actress-singer started in a German tabloid, eventually catching fire online.
Her spokesperson Charley Walters has since spoken out to insist that Day is solely focused on her animal charity at this time.
"While Doris always appreciates hearing from her fans, the rumours about her returning to the big screen are not true," Walters told Deadline.
"She adores her longtime friend Clint Eastwood, but Doris's recent and current focus remains on her Doris Day Animal Foundation, which continues to help animals and the people who love them."
Day last appeared on the big screen back in 1968, in the blackout movie Where Were You When the Lights Went Out? and romantic comedy With Six You Get Eggroll.

Billy continues to find little to praise about The Strain. Here's his review of the show's latest frustrating episode...
This review contains spoilers.
2.9 The Battle For Red Hook
And…The Strain grinds on. After the last episode, where Zach learned some valuable life lessons about relatives who have turned, the story trundles down a furrow now so deep that it's rapidly becoming a tunnel.
Yet, for all the very obvious faults, this was probably one of The Strain's better season 2 stories because it resisted the usual annoyance of flitting about between people having mostly irrelevant conversations.
Therefore we got no Palmer, no Quinlan, no flashbacks and no Gus. What we did get was a funky new credit sequence quite possibly designed to remind people that there is a book to buy, if they can’t bother watching all of this interminable show. The new credits are actually so much better...

True stories adapted into film are seemingly everywhere nowadays. For every Paranormal Activity clone that there is, it’s easy to slap a ‘Based on True Events’ label on the film and give it extra weight. All of the events in these types of films are so familiar and so similar to what many claim actually happened to them at one point that chances are something in your bump in the middle of the night thriller happened to someone somewhere at some point.
The Black Monk of Pontefract is the true life tale from which this film takes its inspiration. It is regarded as the most violent haunting in Europe and is strange because of the apparition of a hooded figure that accompanied the poltergeist activity. The film is the story of what happened but moves the action forward to 1974 instead of the late 60s and is based on accounts from group studies,...

Director Pat Holden’s great little; dingy, gritty and oh so very unglamorous (“based on a true story”) Indie horror 'When the Lights Went Out' is set for DVD in the new year. Dingy and gritty might not sound the greatest of preambles, but when you’re being terrorized by a killer poltergeist deep in the heart of the North of England, it’s not going to be a glamorous fun fest. 'When the Lights Went Out' goes on sale Jan 7. Synopsis: Everything you are about to see…really happened. Yorkshire, the north of England, 1974, the Maynard family moves into their dream house. It’s a dream that quickly descends into a panic stricken nightmare as the family discovers a horrifying truth, a truth that will make the history books. The house is already occupied by the most violent poltergeist ever documented, a poltergeist that will...

A producer has held a mass exorcism at a London cinema, claiming his film was being haunted by evil spirits. Filmmaker Bill Bungay blamed several strange occurrences connected with his film When the Lights Went Out on "the effects of a demonic possession". Two showings of the horror film at the Soho Screening Rooms were hit by blackouts, with Bungay deciding to hold an exorcism to cleanse the cinema. Using the help of 100 male and female religious friends, he felt that exorcism needed to be held as it could not have been a "coincidence". Bungay's film is based on the supposed haunting of a Yorkshire home that belonged (more)...

The Sweeney (15)
(Nick Love, 2012, UK) Ray Winstone, Ben Drew, Hayley Atwell, Damian Lewis, 112 mins
The original TV cop show has been so updated here, it barely registers as the same product. But for all the steely modern cityscapes and pulsating action, this a 21st century cop thriller with 1970s values, both in terms of its shouty, louty, rule-bending lawmen (Winstone is a parody of himself) and its "hand in your badge" cop-movie cliches. And as for political correctness – leave it aaaaht!
Premium Rush (12A)
(David Koepp, 2012, Us) Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dania Ramirez, Michael Shannon. 91 mins
This zippy-chase thriller puts you in the saddle of an ace New York cycle courier, seeking to deliver a mystery package that everyone's after. It's a carbon-neutral Speed.
To Rome With Love (12A)
(Woody Allen, 2012, Us/Ita/Spa) Jesse Eisenberg, Penélope Cruz, 112 mins
After the blip of Midnight In Paris, it's back to the usual late-period...

While the International Film Festival Rotterdam is widely known for its bold selection of arthouse films there's another side to the festival as well. Rotterdam is arguably the most genre friendly of the major European festivals, the programmers there have an excellent eye for up and coming talent, particularly in the space where arthouse film and genre film collide. Need an example? Rotterdam was where a little Swedish vampire film titled Let The Right One In was discovered by the world. And it looks like they may have another of that high caliber in Pat Holden's When The Lights Went Out.Claiming to be based upon a true story - though what horror film doesn't do that these days? - the picture revolves around a family...
