The blank fortune cookie was once found by the director and he later decided to use this idea in the movie. While writing the film Ray Roman believed that receiving a blank fortune cookie was a bad thing, until Co-Writer Renee Fox mentioned that it could be a good thing, kind of like a "blank check".
In college Ray came up with his pitch for A Future of Fortune (2009) the night before presenting it to the class. Each student was assigned to write and present their treatment to the class and out of 25+ pitches, 5 would be selected to turn into a short film for the final project. Ray's treatment was one of the 5 selected, voted by the class. The film was originally set to be a drama but after rewriting the script it became a romantic comedy.
Jerry Otis originally auditioned for the role of the butler but after director Ray Roman took notice of Jerry's ability to improvise he gave him the role of the Realtor. Jerry Otis also did behind the scenes photography on the set of A Future of Fortune (2009).
Parts of the cast played guitar and sang on set in between scene setups.
The scene of Candy by the pool was shot in the backyard of the directors grandparents house.
