- WE WILL NEVER STOP MOCKING THE TITLE...COUGAR TOWN
Grayson (Josh Hopkins) actually invents a term for Jules' (Courteney Cox) idea of everybody going on vacation together: gag-bismal. But Jules insist families take vacations. ("We got the dreamer, the schemer, the queen bee, the damaged goods, the iron fist, and the one we all feel sorry for.) They think of going to wine country. (shocking!) But first, Jules has to deal with the n'er-do-well Travis (Dan Byrd), who still hasn't gone back to college and doesn't plan to. Since Travis won't listen to Jules, she decides to send in a closer. Not Ellie (Christa Miller), much to her disappointment, but Laurie (Busy Philipps).
LAURIE: He has a crush on me, so I can get him to listen. Just tell me my parameters. Is it middle-school style OK? Under the shirt, over the bra, or are we totally going full-on ninth-grade, in which case I'll need to rent a hotel room or maybe even a boat...")
JULES: I just got chills. Or I just got felt up by my first ghost.
ELLIE: Liked it?
JULES: I did.
As Andy (Ian Gomez) and Bobby (Brian Van Holt) practice their 80's shades look, Grayson got duped into taking Stan to the park. It turns out he didn't mind it a bit. So much so, it was starting to scare Jules, much like Andy spending way too much time with Bobby ever since he got some money. Laurie tried to talk to Travis about appreciating his mother actually paying for college, unlike her mother stealing her hair and selling it to a doll company. She was stuck there. It wasn't like she was going to max out her credit card to buy cheap airfare to Hawaii.
LAURIE: (to the gang) Travis moved to Hawaii.
As the gang decided earlier to take a group vacation to wine country they changed their destination to a few thousand miles west of there. Jules was worried that Grayson was trying to jump-start her uterus to have kids again, and Ellie was not happy that Bobby would be staying in the 2nd bedroom of their 2 bedroom suite. But somehow, everybody got to Hawaii. Ellie didn't want everybody to act like idiots, like Laurie did on the plane stripping down to her bra since it looked like a bikini (it didn't), but the guys already had matching Hawaiian shirts on...and 80's Tom Cruise sunglasses. And Jules went down the waterslide in her sundress.
It turns out, Jules heeded Laurie's advice to go "the Chicago way" on Grayson (from , although Laurie's needed work). She told Grayson that she was eager to move in together with him, which sent Grayson screaming in the other direction. He relented later and asked Jules to talk about their future at dinner. Jules agreed, since the Chicago way worked for her.
Bobby gets his rental (a golf cart, natch) and drives to the shack where Travis was holed up with no money. And apparently, Penny Can in Hawaii is called Coco Rock. Jules, you might suspect, is livid with Travis, especially since he was excited about Ted Buckland (), who could take any song and make it sad. Even Love Shack makes Jules want to kill herself.
JULES: He lives in a shack, he sits on the beach all day and parties all night. What kind of life is that?
THE CREW: "An awesome one" "Best life ever" "First time I've ever been jealous of him."
JULES: Good friends would lie.
While Jules guzzles down her breakfast smoothie (with rum) from Big Kimo...Big Carl's cousin...Ellie has to put up with what her husband packed for her...all slutty attire. Shopping was not an option, as the stores were closed. But the hotel gift shop was open. Andy just loved the $30 pair of socks Ellie bought, but he was enjoying inventing a "knocking language" with next-door neighbor Bobby.
As Ted serenaded Jules and Travis with a-ha's Take on Me, Travis tells her his job is waxing surfboards. He wasn't even thinking about the future, but Jules demanded he give up Hawaii and stop living in the now. Travis pulled the 'I'm 20 now' routine and sent Jules on her way. Still stinging from Travis' rebukes, Jules has it out with Grayson when he talks about having kids. She said after witnessing Travis throw his life away, she didn't want to have any more kids. Grayson wasn't happy, but he understood the two conversations weren't going to work, so he agreed to put the baby talk on the back burner and make it all about a lovers' weekend. Complete with Jules feeding him pineapple. (BLECH!-everybody else) However, Laurie is not ready to throw in the towel on bringing Travis home. She even quoted in every TV movie she ever made: "I will not give up on that boy!"
Jules and Ellie lay by the pool, Ellie still sporting her "Don't bother" top to keep away the "resort buddies", and complaining about "40 towel lady" and "Seinfeld guy". Ellie reminded Jules Grayson wasn't going to give up on having kids. Grayson launching kids in the pool didn't help, so Jules took him up to the hotel room to go nuts. Except she forgot her birth control pills, leading to two problems for Grayson. And Ellie figured out how to deal with Andy not wanting to do any of the things she wanted to do: take Bobby, who had never been on a vacation before and wanted to do EVERYTHING (relaxing and non-relaxing) people do on vacations. Bobby becomes the first human timeshare, while Jules and Grayson try to scam some condoms from other tourists.
Laurie tracks down Travis and tries to tell him to get over being dumped by Kirsten, but Travis insisted it wasn't about that. Although it was for Ted, as Gooch left him...for someone named Hooch. ("You didn't stand a chance.") But Laurie had to take one for the team, since she knew as well as anybody what it was like to screw up when you're young. She pulls Travis out of work and takes him to relax in the ocean. After hanging out all day, they walked on the beach hand-in-hand, and Laurie proved he didn't have to keep thinking about Kirsten and throwing his life away because there were plenty of other women out there, like her, for example. She figured if she told him he had a chance with her (even though Jules would freak out), it might be the impetus he needed to return home and go back to college. Except he saw right through it and was mad at her for doing his mother's dirty work.
On the beach, a little boy grabs his truck in front of Jules and Grayson, and Grayson admits he can't keep the thought of kids on the back burner. He had wanted them his whole life, but Jules couldn't think about it because Travis was throwing his life away and she was afraid of losing Grayson. She wanted to keep pretending everything in Hawaii was still OK. Grayson couldn't and slept alone that night. In the morning, Bobby wanted time to himself because it was becoming too hard to be the third wheel on Ellie and Andy's vacation. Grayson was still upset over the previous night, but Travis did agree to return home and go back to college, although now he hates Laurie.
Ted understood what Jules was going through, but it was always better to find that person who was willing to go through life with you. Travis went to apologize to Laurie and Jules talked to Grayson. She told him how lucky she was to go through all of these crazy things, yet Grayson was still with her. And somehow, they finally ran into Tom, who kept running into them but missed them. But the Cul-de-Sac Crew invites him to have a drink with them.
