Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for the new documentary “All Man: The International Male Story,” the story of a male fashion icon and the people who developed it. In select theaters and through digital Video on Demand on June 6th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This is the story of that ubiquitous “mail order” magazine. Founder Gene Burkhard was an ex-Air Force veteran and gay man in the closeted 1950s, who ended up after his service living in Europe. What he noticed was the freedom in men’s fashions there, especially during the Swingin’ London scene in the Carnaby Street 1960s. That observation became the idea for International Male, which began when Burkhard started selling medical undergarments as Speedo-style bikini bottoms … for men. Like Hugh Hefner, he envisioned his new fashion catalog as a fantasy destination for men, the women who buy their clothing and of course gay men in post Stonewall America.
