There are two new wide or semi-wide releases this weekend, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” and “Jules,” but how many moviegoers will actually buy tickets with so many other stronger contenders still in theaters? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Before we get to the new movies this week, we probably should address the “Barbenheimer” in the room. There’s very little doubt that “Barbie” can pull off a rare fourth weekend at #1 with upwards of $32 million or more after holding up so well against “Meg 2” and the “Ninja Turtles” this past weekend. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” also has a good chance at reclaiming second place, since it’s likely to have a smaller drop-off this weekend than both of last week’s new movies.

Cinematically, I've always thought of the Greek God Zeus as a toga kind of guy. That's probably because I loved those old Ray Harryhausen monster movies when I was a kid, especially those classic swords-and-sandals adventures like "Jason and the Argonauts" and "Clash of the Titans."
Niall MacGinnis and Laurence Olivier memorably played Zeus in those movies, and many other actors have portrayed the character over the years. One of the most intriguing was potentially Christopher Walken, who played the role in the unreleased comedy "Gods Behaving Badly." In 2013, photos emerged of him in the Daily Mail, dressed like a crime kingpin rather than the traditional...

For most of the 2000s, Marc Turtletaub has been one of the leading producers of mid-size indie works (many of them quite successful), so it should come as no surprise that he would take an interest in directing one of his own. After making his directorial debut with 2013’s Gods Behaving Badly, he’s helmed Puzzle, […]

Chicago – When a notable indie film producer decides to direct, what does it feel like on that other side? For Marc Turtletaub, the connection was in his sophomore effort as director, “Puzzle.” The emotional drama features the impeccable Kelly Macdonald, as a stay-at-home Mom named Agnes who discovers a hidden talent.

Her two boys are older, and her working class husband Louie (David Denman) has their life path mapped out. Everything Agnes does is perfection, the pieces of how she manages her life, family and church fit together in a rote and routine pattern. A couple days after her birthday, she has a moment to herself and opens one of the presents… a jigsaw puzzle. She puts the thousands of pieces in front of her and before the afternoon is up, she assembles it. This begins a journey for her.

Who knew a film about putting together puzzles would be this adorable? Puzzle is the second feature film from veteran producer-turned-filmmaker Marc Turtletaub (Gods Behaving Badly), and it's just perfect. Going in to see this at the Sundance Film Festival, I was curious to find out what a film about a woman who discovers she's good at putting together puzzles would be about. I'm happy to report that it's an absolute delight. Puzzle is a charming, understated, quiet little film that will melt your heart, and make you laugh, and give you a warm, fuzzy feeling. The whole time I was watching this film, I had that warm, gushy feeling inside my chest, like you're falling in love with someone. It's thanks to the wonderful lead performance by Kelly Macdonald and the story, which is about a woman learning to be herself and do whatever she wants. With a screenplay by Oren Moverman,...

An animated superhero movie featuring Marlon Brando? A Bill Murray comedy? Just two of the strange, starry films we may never get to see.
Film history is littered with movies that have wound up on the shelf for some reason, either because of financial difficulties or, in the case of The Day The Clown Died, because its director and star decided it was too embarrassing to be released. We've written about all sorts of shelved or cancelled films before, from Roger Corman's infamous Fantastic Four to the unreleased John Goodman comedy, Spring Break '83.
Every so often, though, we'll hear about curious-sounding projects that generate a bit of news before vanishing again. An animated film featuring the voices of Marlon Brando and Brendan Fraser, perhaps, or a modern comedy about old Greek gods featuring Christopher Walken as Zeus.
Here, then, are five strange, star-laden movies that,...

For someone who was ultra transparent during production, it’s almost as if Max Landis has placed a self-imposed gag order or the more likely scenario, simply didn’t really need to rush his directing debut in post production when we consider his sizeable workload. Backed by Big Beach Films – the prod co. with a winning formula and streak of Sundance comedies such as Little Miss Sunshine and Safety Not Guaranteed, 2015 should be a banner year for Landis name in the film stratosphere as it’ll include a whopping trio of penned items in Paul McGuigan’s Frankenstein, Nima Nourizadeh’s American Ultra, Paco Cabezas’ Mr. Right and finally, the sexual identity non-labeller comedy Me Him Her (we had on the radar last year) that sounds like a cozy fit for Park City. Worth noting, this features the work of cinematographer Ross Riege (The Kings of Summer).

X-Men franchise director Bryan Singer, whose first two features debuted at the Sundance Film Festival — including The Usual Suspects in 1995 — was one of the industry figures named to the Sundance juries that will judge this year’s films when the festival begins next week. Singer, who has X-Men: Days of Future Past due in May, will be one of five members of the U.S. Dramatic Jury. Sharon Stone, Christopher Walken, John Turturro and Alicia Silverstone are among the cast of producer Marc Turtletaub’s directorial debut.
The deities of Mount Olympus descend to the streets of New York City, where they wreak havoc on mortals and much worse on the audience, in Marc Turtletaub’s myth-inspired comedy, Gods Behaving Badly. Rounding up a cast of stars -- many who had their heyday two decades ago -- this outdated, unfunny satire feels like an extended SNL sketch from the early ‘90’s, and one that probably would have been tossed into the wastepaper basket. Some bankable names and a mildly clever idea should send these immortals straight to VOD, with a small courtesy release in select cities.

Gods Behaving Badly, anyone out there familiar with this title? You should be! After all, we’re talking about Marc Turtletaub‘s upcoming comedy which has an awesome cast on board. Head inside to take the very first look at Zeus, Aphrodite, Persephone and Hades! Turtletaub directs the whole thing from a script written by Josh Goldfaden, but as you probably remember – the movie is actually an adaptation of Marie Phillips‘ best-selling satire novel of the same name. Getting in some quality time, Sharon Stone and her boyfriend, Martin Mica, spent the day together in Beverly Hills on Wednesday (January 30).
Rocking coral-colored skinny jeans and a black jacket, the “Lovelace” beauty happily held hands with her man as they strolled down the street.
Despite rumors of a split just after the holidays, the couple, who have been dating for eight months, seemed to be having a great time and even shared a long embrace.
In career news, the 54-year-old actress has been busy on the set of “Gods Behaving Badly,” a comedy also starring Christopher Walken and Alicia Silverstone.

Even though she’s a working gal, Alicia Silverstone’s number one priority is her number one guy – Bear Blu! On Wednesday, Alicia had to re-shoot scenes for her upcoming film "Gods Behaving Badly" in New York City ... but she made sure that her 16-month-old son still got plenty of mommy time on set. In between filming, the 35-year-old spent quality time with her super cute toddler in her trailer -- even showing him around the Central Park set and introducing him to cast members. A wide-eyed Bear looked like he was having a blast with his superstar mom, smiling and laughing in her arms. And we have to say Bear is the spitting image of his father, Christopher Jarecki (the pair have been together since 2005)! Coming off his Adrien Brody-starring education drama Detachment, Tony Kaye will pursue the antonym Attachment for his next project. #25. Gods Behaving Badly - Marc Turtletaub A major supplier of Sundance films (Little Miss Sunshine, SherryBaby, Sunshine Cleaning and Our Idiot Brother) over the years as a producer at Big Beach, if there is a venue where Marc Turtletaub should show off his filmmaker it would be in the condo hills of Park City. Problem isn't the heavy star-studded cast or the comedy's logline but the actual timing -- they'd have to work overtime to have Gods Behaving Badly ready for the fest as shooting appears to have just wrapped. Gist: The story follows Greek gods living in a brownstone in New York City, where their paths cross with a young couple (Alicia Silverstone and Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Christopher Walken plays Zeus, Sharon Stone plays Aphrodite (see street pic above), Edie Falco is Artemis, Oliver Platt is Apollo, John Turturro is Hades and Rosie Perez plays Persephone. A stalker was arrested outside Sharon Stone’s home earlier today (11.08.11)
A man in his 50s was found “yelling and banging” at the gate of the 53-year-old star’s Hollywood Hills house and was detained by police.
A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed: “Today at around 10:30am the Lapd West unit responded to actress Sharon Stone’s house for a man yelling and banging at the gate. He was detained for mental evaluation.”
No one was hurt in the incident, and it is not known if Sharon – who has been in New York filming ‘Gods Behaving Badly’ with Alicia Silverstone and Christopher Walken – was at home at the time.
Earlier this year the ‘Basic Instinct’ star obtained a permanent restraining order against “mentally ill” Bradley Gooden, who entered her residence earlier this year claiming it was his house.

This is your Christopher Walken, more like Christopher Strollin (shoot me) around the set of his upcoming film Gods Behaving Badly with his chest hanging out of his shirt. And, correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s not bad? I mean, Ok, look, is he Rafael Nadal? No. But Walken is 68 years old. The fact that his chest doesn’t look like sad pepperoni pizza is a miracle. Walken is portraying Zeus who lives in a sh*tty Brooklyn apartment building, alongside Sharon Stone (Aphrodite), Oliver Platt (Apollo), Edie Falco (Artemis), and most importantly, Phylicia Rashad (Demeter). Claire is back in Brooklyn y’all! [Photos: Splash]...

She's ba-aaaack!!! Look, it's Sharon Stone on the set of Gods Behaving Badly (via Zimbio).
Goddess on the mountain top
Burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
And Venus was her name
-Bananarama "Venus"
She also goes by Aphrodite.
Gods Behaving Badly is producer turned director Marc Turteltaub's first feature so we have no idea whether to salivate or run for cover but the high-concept plot "Greek Gods living in NYC intervene in the lives of a young couple" sounds like the kind of thing that could go either way. It might be immense popcorn fun with lively star turns or the more common typical modern comedy which tends to rely on concept and stars (they've got both here) and forgets that you actually need ideas beyond them if you want more than a three or four laughs over two hours.
Beyond Sharon -- hugely watchable...
