Inventive Short Works Well
This is Just a Place (1961)
** 1/2 (out of 4)
Inventive short from Glut about Albert Einstein's theory of relativity but here done with space travel, which takes us to one of the director's favorite subjects, which is of course dinosaurs. This is a pretty creative little short that does quite a bit within its 4-minute running time. We start off seeing a rocket flying around through various times and while it's clearly not a masterpiece in terms of special effects, considering the type of film we're watching it's not too bad. I really enjoyed the dinosaur fight and one can see how much improved the stop motion effects are compared to the director's earlier work. It's easy to see that Glut was moving forward in terms of his skills because the effects are so much better. I won't ruin the final gag but what happens to the Earth was pretty clever. Fans of Glut's movies will certainly want to check this one out since it does show the director getting his craft down but even moderate sci-fi fans will probably find themselves enjoying this. I'm not certain Einstein would approve but it's still impressive for an amateur film.
