- Jake is upset about a phone call to Miami that no one claims. Based on the date, the family determines that the call was made during the last "family meeting" of Molly's family. Jake is enraged that someone would place a call for $4.82 and not pay for it. They determine that Cousin Muttel is responsible, but he becomes ill before Jake can confront him, though Jake hints a lot about it. Molly nurses him back to health as the the family decides how Muttel will support himself and his wife (who's in Miami). They decide to all chip in and pay Muttel to retire, which offends Muttel. He's never taken a cent from the family and never will. They remind him of the money that they've given him over the years and Jake brings up the phone call. Muttel marches to the desk where the phone sits and shows Jake where he left the $4.82 when he made the call.—Richard Bradbury
- While going over household bills, Jake finds a bill for a long-distance phone call to Miami for $4.85. He wants to know who made the call, so he asks members of Molly's side of the Family Circle Club who placed the call. Cousin Muttel comes in complaining of a heart ailment, and says he has seen Solly, Uncle David's son, the doctor several times. Since Muttel's wife is visiting Miami, Molly says that Muttel will stay with them until he is better. The Goldbergs wait on him hand and foot, and even Solly calls and tells Molly that Muttel is fine. The Family Circle offers to take responsibility for him and retire him at $27.00 a week with their weekly contributions, since several job offers provided don't appeal to Muttel and his lazy work ethic. Muttel refuses saying he never has taken charity, despite the loans of several of the cousins for business ventures. He finds the $4.85 he had left at the bottom of the fruit bowl for the September 4th phone call made at the time of the last meeting.—Robert Gold
