Director John McPhail takes genre mash-up to new heights with this hugely entertaining Scottish horror comedy that plays like Shaun of the Dead meets High School Musical. It’s derived from the 2011 Scottish short Zombie Musical, whose late director Ryan McHenry (also responsible for the Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal meme) co-wrote the script before his tragic death in 2015.
Ella Hunt (Robot Overlords) plays Anna, a sixth former at her school in the small town of New Haven, who clashes with her widowed father (Mark Benton) over her desire to spend a year travelling instead of going off to university. Soon, however, Anna realises she has much bigger problems on her hands, as New Haven faces a full-on zombie apocalypse.

Transformers: The Last Knight is the official title for the 5th movie in the exhaustingly long-running Hasbro series. Now the question remains, "who is the 'Last Knight'?"
Could it be Optimus Prime? The last time we saw him in Transformers: Age of Extinction he was flying up to space to take on the "Robot Overlords". Plus, the instagram post of his face really makes you believe that that's what Director Michael Bay and Paramount want you to think. Although, they have a vast history of throwing curve balls at audiences. Hence, Grimlock and the mute Dino-knights.

Brutal yet sensitively rendered, putting a human face, if a fictional one, on an issue that rarely gets one. Almost Dickens for the 21st century. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about girls and women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
A movie based on a young-adult novel about child sex trafficking? Oh dear. But Sold is… Well, it’s not exactly a newsflash that there are children in the world who are sex slaves, nor that there are men in the world who will pay to rape children. Sold is hardly entertaining in the way that we generally mean when we talk about movies. Perhaps the best word to describe this brutal yet sensitively rendered film is enlightening, for putting a human face, if a fictional one, on an issue that rarely gets one.

Chris Carter confirms that he penned a script for a third The X-Files movie. So what happened?
The X-Files returns to screens next week, with a new six-part 'event' series reuniting David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Yet the show's creator, Chris Carter, has now revealed that a third The X-Files movie has been written. It doesn't sound like it's going anywhere fast, though.
Carter penned the script before he was approached by Fox about the new TV series. And as he told The Hollywood Reporter, "I actually wrote a third movie, just because I was interested in the idea of where that might go".
At one stage, he considered using the new film script as the foundation of the new TV run. "I let my wife read the third movie, and she said 'I think not for television'", he said.

Paranorman director Sam Fell knows a thing or two about spooky stories. And he’s sticking with tales of the other side for his next film, but switching to live action. Fell has Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Jemaine Clement and Stanley Tucci set to star in Croak. Written by Lucy Moore, and called Teen Reaper earlier in its development, the plot finds Butterfield as a young Grim Reaper straddling the worlds of the living and the dead as he shepherds souls on to the afterlife. Not much else is known about the film, as it’s being kept mostly under wraps, but Fell and his producers will soon be spilling more details when they take the project to next month’s American Film Market to drum up distribution business.Butterfield is inheriting the role from Kodi Smit-McPhee, who voiced the lead in Paranorman, and who we can only assume has dropped out for scheduling reasons.

We can't wait for Netflix's November 20th debut of "Marvel's Jessica Jones" starring Krysten Ritter as a superhero who becomes a private detective. The noirish series, which received a great reception at New York Comic Con, costars Carrie-Anne Moss and former Dr. Who David Tennant.
Other Netflix originals premiering in November: "River," starring Stellan Skarsgård as a detective haunted by visions of his murdered colleague; the Aziz Ansari comedy series "Master of None;" and "W/Bob and David," which re-teams Bob Odenkirk and David Cross.
As for movies, you might have missed Keira Knightley in "Anna Karenina" (2012), which first paired "Ex Machina's" Alicia Vikander and Domhnall Gleeson. Also new, Nicolas Cage's "The Runner" and documentaries "Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad and Me," "Call Me Lucky" and "Do I Sound Gay?"

Robots have been a staple on the big screen for many decades, showing up as far back as Fritz Lang’s 1927 classic Metropolis and as recently as Alex Garland’s 2015 film Ex Machina. With numerous depictions of robots have come numerous ideas of what they look like, what they’re capable of, whether they’re good or evil, and other such concerns.
Now vimeo user Mennomail has made a mashup of the various robotic representations on the big screen over the years. The video is set to both Fractals by Monea Music and Ich Will by Rammstein, and highlights both the similarities and differences in how robots have been depicted by various filmmakers. Mennomail also released a list of films from which scenes appear, which is as follows:

Robot Overlords took over our cinema screens back in March and now, according to the film’s director Jon Wright, the malignant mechanicals have their beady laser eyes on our tellies. Yes, they’re targeting a small screen spin-off. Wright announced the news at the McM London Comic Con, with word that Tony Wood (a veteran of Coronation Street among other things) will oversee the new show for Piers Tempest and Jo Bamford’s Tempo Productions, who were behind the film in the first place. “This series will really expand the canvas of the robot occupation and we are aiming to make an explosive show that the UK will be very proud of.”Though the film had Gillian Anderson, Ben Kingsley, Callan McAuliffe, James Tarpey and Ella Hunt among its cast, the show will boast a new ensemble and might also march on to TV under a different name. Hardly an exhilarating MPAA ratings bulletin today as it does include Joe Dante's Burying the Ex starring Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene and Alexandra Daddario and Jon Watts' Cop Car starring Kevin Bacon and Shea Whigham, but I'm having a hard time getting too excited for either of those. We also have Strangerland starring Nicole Kidman, Joseph Fiennes and Hugo Weaving, which played the Sundance Film Festival and received some high marks and was picked up by Alchemy for release later this year. There is good word buzzing about Roy Andersson's A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence and the response to Bill Condon's Mr. Holmes, featuring Ian McKellen as an aging Sherlock Holmes, seems to be pleasant enough, but there isn't much here to get the blood moving. The complete bulletin is listed below. Burying the Ex Rated R For sexual content, partial nudity,...

Mitch Pileggi, who appeared in 88 episodes of The X-Files as Walter Skinner, has been confirmed for a return…
Not a huge amount was known about the new X-Files episodes when the upcoming event series was announced. Beyond the involvement of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, we didn’t know much at all about the cast.
Now, though, another familiar face has joined the ranks – Mitch Pileggi, reprising the role of Walter Skinner, boss to the main duo and occasional annoyance too.
The show wouldn’t be the same with out him, seeing as he is the only other character besides Mulder and Scully to appear in all nine seasons. He also popped up in both movies and the short-lived X-Files spin-off The Lone Gunmen. Outside of The X-Files, he’s also been seen in Supernatural, Dallas and Grey’s Anatomy.

★★☆☆☆ At a point in Jon Wright's Robot Overlords (2014), Robin Smythe - the film's human Big Bad played by Ben Kingsley - asks "You know what 'chav' stands for? Council house and violent." It's delivered in an unsure northern accent that straddles the uneasy border between old foes Lancashire and Yorkshire (particularly odd given that he's from Salford). It's a strange socialrealist beat to put in Robot Overlords, which is otherwise a Children's Film Foundation lark with sometimes impressive special effects and super-sized ambitions on a modest budget. Robots from outer space have taken over our planet. The paranoid androids have also taken the liberty of attaching electronic devices to the necks of the populous.

Fancy a TV show exploring the Earth under the rule of robots? Robot Overlords will be heading to the smaller screen in due course...
In UK cinemas today is Robot Overlords, a fun and tense family movie, set in a world that's been under robot occupation for three years. The film centres on a quartet of young performers, and it's a welcome and effective homage to the kind of family movies we got in the 1980s. Our full review is here.
And now we learn that more Robot Overlords is on the way. Whilst not ruling out future movie sequels, should the new film do well, director Jon Wright told us that " it's looking very likely that we're going to turn Robot Overlords into a high-end TV series".

Jon Wright on directing Robot Overlords, working with Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson, and why he made an 80s-style family film.
Three films in, and Jon Wright is very much a director whose output is worth keeping an eye on. His first full feature, Tormented, was an effective horror with some strong moments, but it was Grabbers where he really struck gold. It remains, along with Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, our favourite horror comedy of recent times. Wright has taken a different turn for his new movie, Robot Overlords, a sci-fi movie aimed at a family audience. And he spared us some time to natter about it...
Can you put into words how you're feeling, on the eve of your film's release?
Well, I'm a bit nervous about the release, as you would be. Hoping it goes well. And I'm reading all the press that people are writing, which I actually think is very interesting.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are going to reprise their roles as Mulder and Scully in the new X-Files revival.
The truth is not only out there, but it is glorious: after years in the alien and supernatural wilderness, The X-Files is returning to Fox for a six-episode limited series, and David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are set to star.
Duchovny and Anderson are reprising their roles of FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dany Scully, respectively, alongside X-Files creator Chris Carter, who has returned to helm the procedural revival.
In a statement, Carter said, “I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”
The X-Files is of course the legendary series that became the Fox network’s first major cultural phenomenon when it ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002. During that time,...

Back in November, Screenterrier reported on the casting of Asa Butterfield as lead role Jacob, and Ella Purnell as Peculiar Child Emma Bloom, joining Eva Green in Tim Burton's Peregrine's Home For Peculiars, based upon the best-selling novel 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' by Ransom Riggs.

Helix continues to tell an increasingly implausible and unconvincing sci-fi tale. Surely this won't return for season 3?
This review contains spoilers.
2.10 Mother
What with some of the weird things said by characters in recent episodes, and a general malaise overtaking what narrative does exist, I’ve come to the conclusion that the writers of Helix are simply bored with it now. Perhaps they've already been told there won’t be a third season, and so they’re working on another idea that won’t crash as spectacularly as this one has.
To wit, Mother is written essentially as a series of short conversations between two characters that mostly go nowhere. Julia talks to Amy, Winger talks to Alan, Alan talks to Soren, Sarah talks to Peter. It’s disturbingly repetitive and seemingly endless.
Quite why at the start Alan makes an odd face after talking to Soren I’ve no idea?...

Along with talking about his new film, Robot Overlords, the veteran actor is full of stories. The problem is, Zoe Williams has heard them all before ...
“Can we get some heat in here, please?” Ben Kingsley says sharply to his PR man, in a basement in Covent Garden. He picks up my phone, which is recording us. “Look at that,” he says, in a different voice altogether, mellow and chocolatey, “isn’t it awesome?”
He is, like any charismatic, totally dominant: his mood is the weather. He can turn the sunshine on and off like a switch, and watch his audience expand and shrink at his determination. He enjoys this a little bit too much, in my opinion. He has submitted himself to this interview to publicise Robot Overlords, quite an endearing film in which robots invade the Earth, with evil intentions, as invaders are wont. With Robot Overlords out in cinemas this week, Gillian Anderson chats to us about family movies, sci-fi, and her love of Studio Ghibli.
Robot Overlords is the new film from director Jon Wright, who previously gave the world Tormented, and the terrific Grabbers. It's a throwback of sorts to the kind of movies we got for families in the 1980s, and his impressive cast is anchored by Gillian Anderson and Sir Ben Kingsley. We got to speak to Gillian Anderson ahead of the film's release. And having established that there's no fresh news on the X-Files reboot that had been chatted about earlier in the year, here's how things went.
Here's a nice way to start: I enjoyed this!

I figure it best to start with honesty! I tend to watch films like Robot Overlords through the eyes of my 11-year old son. What I took from him was firstly,...

Beta wins My Special Prize for the Best Berlin Lineup of all the International Sales Agents
From the producer of 2013 Golden Bear winner “Child’s Pose” comes “Aferim!” playing in Berlinale Competition. Policeman Costandin, a charismatic mixture of a funny Stalin and a somewhat more pragmatic Don Quixote, and his shy and introverted son ride through the rural countryside In search of a fugitive Gypsy slave. Meeting hundreds of characters, delivering a surprise in every scene, this is an ingenious Western in a very wild East of 19th century Romania directed by Radu Jude (“Everybody in our Family”) and produced by HiFilm’s Ada Solomon, Klas, Endorfilm and Mulberry Development, and stars Teodor Corban (“Child’s Pose”, “Beyond the Hills”), Mihai Comãnoiu and Cuzin Toma.
Forum entry “Zurich," Oliver Hirschbiegel’s "13 Minutes" (Competition - Out of Competition) plus this year’s Sundance Audience Award winner “Umrika” and the new Sky Italia series “1992" kicking off the Berlinale Special Series section make this a banner Berlin for Beta Cinema.
In official selection/out of competition bows Nazi resistance drama "13 Minutes" about failed Hitler assassin Georg Elser. Oliver Hirschbiegel, whose Academy Award nominated “Downfall” is one of the most successful Beta Cinema titles ever with 145 sold territories, presents a stunning, emotional portrait of the resistance fighter and his attack on the Munich Bürgerbräukeller on November 8th 1939. Georg Elser was a man who could have changed world history and saved millions of human lives, but his bomb, built to tear Adolf Hitler apart, exploded 13 minutes late. Produced by Lucky Bird’s Oliver Schündler and Boris Ausserer, who just recently won the Bavarian Film Award for "13 Minutes", and written by Fred Breinersdorfer (“Sophie Scholl”), the feature stars Christian Friedel (“The White Ribbon”), Katharina Schüttler (“Generation of War” ) and Burghart Klaussner (“The White Ribbon”).
Dutch filmmaker Sacha Polak, who received the prestigious Fipresci-award at the 2012 Berlinale for Hemel, presents with "Zurich" her second feature film, a road movie starring famous Dutch singer and performance artist Wende Snijders. "Zurich" (Viking Film/Rohfilm/Private View/Nrt/Zdf/arte) revolves around Nina, who is wandering along Europe’s motorways in a desperate attempt to leave the past behind. Slowly it becomes clear that Nina’s drive to hang around in the truckers’ scene is a result of the pain caused by the ultimate betrayal that has befallen her. Sacha Polak developed the script by author Helena van der Meulen during last year’s Berlinale Residency program.
Kicking off the Berlinale Special Series, designated to promote outstanding international TV-series, is the political thriller "1992" from Sky Italia ("Gomorrah"), La 7 and Wildside. Over 20 years ago, on February 17th 1992, the first arrest within the so-called Mani Pulite (Clean Hands) maxi-investigation was made in Italy. It was the symbolic start of a revolution. "1992" revolves around six ordinary people whose lives are intertwined with the country's political, civil and social earthquake. The 10xone hour series stars Stefano Accorsi (idea), Guido Caprino and Miriam Leone; director is Giuseppe Gagliardi.
Celebrating its Berlin Market Premiere is Prashant Nair’s Indian drama "Umrika," which just recently received the Audience Award at Sundance, starring world-renowned, up-and-coming young actors Suraj Sharma ("Life of Pi") and Tony Revolori ("The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Dope"). "Umrika" (Hindi for America) is about a small village in India that is invigorated when one of their own travels to America, sharing his adventures and inspiring hope through letters home. But when the letters mysteriously stop coming, his brother sets out on a journey to find him.
Also premiering at the market is the fourth adventure of "The Famous Five" (Sam Film/Constantin), in which Enid Blyton’s teenager gang venture thousands of miles and thousands of years back in time to solve yet another nail-biting mystery. Prolific maverick filmmaker Detlev Buck ("Hands off Mississippi") presents as international market premiere "Bibi & Tina 2," an inventive live-action adaptation of the teen-adventure and romance in the beloved “Bibi & Tina” universe.
Amongst the upcoming titles, "Colonia" is heading the slate, starring Emma Watson in her first lead role since "Harry Potter" alongside Daniel Brühl ("Rush") as her abducted boyfriend and opposite a very sinister Mikael Nykvist ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"). The $15 million production wrapped shooting mid-January and is being presold at the European Film Market.
"Ghosthunters: On Icy Trails" marks another English-language presales highlight for the Efm. This witty and charming Family Entertainment movie sees Milo Parker ("Robot Overlords") team up with the animated Asg, the “Averagely Spooky Ghost” Hugo, to save the world from the “Ancient Ice Ghost”. A promo will be made available for buyers.

Essentially Skynet-on-Sea, the small-town setting for coming-of-age sci-fi Robot Overlords pinpoints the midpoint between The Terminator and Wish You Were Here. And yes, that place does exist. Here's a new clip to prove it, showcasing the film's organic and metallic protagonists in furious action.brightcove.createExperiences();Set in a world policed for three years by giant robots and under strict curfew, our heroes are a group of kids led by taciturn type Sean Flynn (The Great Gatsby’s Callan McAuliffe) who are mad as hell and aren’t going to take it anymore. It’s the work of Jon ‘Grabbers’ Wright and promises to tap into that fun, ‘80s spirit of Amblin films. “I woke up one morning having had a dream about being incarcerated in my house, with giant robots walking by in the street outside,” explains the director of its unusual genesis. “It gave birth to the notion...
