Grizzly Lynn
owen-watts19 July 2020
Dr Lynn Rogers is a biologist, a bear-expert and frankly a bit of a lunatic. He is the "Bearwalker" and has the bare-faced cheek of trying to claim to nature cameramen that the only way to observe individual bears is by getting all up in their face and giving them nuts. Nature cameramen who silently observe animals without ever touching them for a job, like. On the other hand you have a load of trophy hunters, who not only don't want to be all rolling around with them in the dirt, but are actively happy to shoot bears with radio collars on them which seems exceptionally callous.

The photography is rather stunning, the black bears are beautiful creatures and the boundless greenery of Minnesota is deeply enticing. Bearwalker feels like it could interrogate Lynn's methodology a little more, as the later (although much less tonally consistent) "Bear With a Bounty" did, as he just tends to brush off criticisms which... of course he would. Clearly it's a hard life for the beautiful black bears of Minnesota as they are caught between these two extremes of human. One who thinks the best way of observing them is to get all pally with them which surely complicates their trust in other humans and one who couldn't care less about them to the point they'd lackadaisically kill them despite not really needing to.
