Paul McCartney returned to a concert stage Saturday in Albany, New York, after being sidelined for two months because of a virus, spinning out songs from the Beatles, Wings and a solo career that has spanned more than 50 years of rock 'n' roll. "It's great to be back," said McCartney, who turned 72 two weeks ago. He looked none the worse for wear, putting on a show of just under three hours with 38 songs before finishing with the three-song medley that ends the Abbey Road album. McCartney was briefly hospitalized in Tokyo in May because of the viral infection. The illness...

Paul McCartney was the musical guest on this week's episode of "Saturday Night Live." The Beatles alum joined the holiday episode, hosted by Martin Short.
McCartney sat down at the piano for a performance of "My Valentine."
The singer joined in for a "Holiday Pageant" sketch with Short, that led into a performance of "Wonderful Christmastime."
The performance of "Wonderful Christmastime" featured the New York City Children's Chorus. The chorus also opened the show with "Silent Night," as a tribute to the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Finally, McCartney once again joined forces with the surviving members of Nirvana for an electric performance. The collaboration first took place at New York's 12-12-12 concert, benefitting victims of Hurricane Sandy. On 'SNL' McCartney, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear played a new track, "Cut Me Some Slack." A video of the performance will be added once it becomes available.

Saying last night’s episode of SNL fell short of expectations would be the understatement of the year. Host Martin Short didn’t disappoint; his brand of physical comedy and impeccable comedic timing were refreshing, but he didn’t have adequate material to work with. As expected, the episode was star-studded — complete with cameos from other SNL alums and show favorites — but the celebrity guests acted as background props for the most part instead of contributing to skits. However, every time Paul McCartney took the stage, his tender voice wiped my memory clean of any mediocre jokes that preceded his stellar performance.

In what was perhaps the cameo-iest "Saturday Night Live" ever, host Martin Short and a cast of thousands closed out 2012 with style. The show was high-energy from start to finish and had several strong sketches.
Nothing could top the moving cold open acknowledging the Newtown tragedy, but nonetheless, it was one of the season's best episodes.
Monologue
The parade of cameos kicks off right away with Paul Shaffer at the piano for Short's rendition of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," with all the Christmas stuff replaced with sex references. We lost track of the lyrics, frankly, as Short went backstage and bumped into Kristen Wiig (and her creepy doll hand from the Lawrence Welk sketches), Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hanks, Samuel L. Jackson, a guy with a llama and Tina Fey.
"A Tony Bennett Christmas"
Cameo No. 7 comes courtesy of Alec Baldwin, who does his fabulous Tony Bennett...

"We were on holiday together, Nancy and I, and it was raining, it's kind of led me towards a kind of minor-y type thing and the sentiment.
