- At a house in Lawrence, a girl calls over her DB radio to her mother. The girl, Carrie, says that she can't find her doll Bernice and asks her mother to come home. Her mother says that they need the family, and Carrie signs off. Carrie hears a thud and turns to find a bed on her bed. She opens it and finds her doll Bernice in it. Carrie takes it out and goes to bed, and the bag twitches and hands reach out from it, followed by their owner, Carrie turns over, sees the figure approaching her, and screams.
At the library, Mary is the phone trying to reach her mother, and tells the person at the end, Nina, to tell her mother she called if Nina sees them. Lata hears Mary talking, and once Mary hangs up Lata asks about Mary's mother. Mary says that she heard her mother was working with some Hunters in Minnesota a few months ago, but her mother hasn't responded to her messages. Mary then points to the others that they've got through all of Samuel's hunting journals but they've found no clue to where he is. John tells her that they're not going to stop, and figures Sam didn't lead them to Topeka just to lose his trail.
Mary explains that she and Sam argued about her becoming a Hunter, and it feels like he's giving her the silent treatment. Lata suggests that Sam thinks he has something to prove and has gone off on his own, so Mary can leave. Mary shook, walks away, and Lata suggests that John and Mary take a break and go to a movie. John seizes on the idea, and Mary tells him to go on his own if he wants and she's going to check with Ada.
John, Mary, and Lata go to see Ada, who has assembled all the pages from her automatic writing. Lata looks on the trap box, which still isn't working, and Ada warns that they don't stand a chance of the Akrida invading the world unless they can get it working. She says that her writing may lead them to a way to get the box working, and that an address recurs in her writing. She figures that the address means something to the demon who possessed her.
Carlos comes in and says that there are cops at Mary's neighbor's house. She goes to check on the children with John, while Ada and Carlos go to check out the address. John and Mary get to the house, and Mary tells him about Carrie Billup and her older brother Ford. A female cop, Betty, greets John by name and asks him why he's there. He says that he's there with Mary, and Mary introduces herself. Betty says that they got hold of Mrs. Billup and she told the police to have Mary and Sam look after Ford. Carrie is missing, and Mary goes into check the house. Betty asks about Mary, and John says that he enrolled in community college, and he and Mary are part of the same study group. When Betty says that she tried to call John, John says that he was unreachable and Betty tells him that she just wanted to reach out to him and see that he was okay.
Mary talks to Ford, who tells her that he didn't tell the police because they'd think he was cray. When Ford got to Carrie's room, he saw a long twisted arm pull Carrie into a sack and they both disappeared. Mary assures him that he doesn't think he's crazy, and she'll get Carrie back.
John and Mary go to Carrie's room, and Mary snarks about how John and Betty seem to be getting along well. They see Carrie's CB and Mary explains that she has one in her room, and she uses it to pretend she had a normal live. John asks her what she wanted to be when she was older, and Mary tells him that her parents didn't dream of having a normal life, and being a kid who killed monsters was her only option. He talks about how he made a list of all the places he wanted to go with Henry, and tells Mary that one she finds Sam and stops hunting, she'll need a new list of places she wants to go. Mary finds a scrap of cloth from the bag on the floor.
The demon that grabbed Carrie crawls along the walls of its lair, and children's dolls lay on the floor. It crawls to a pile of them.
John and Mary go to the Winchester house with Ford and Mary puts up a hex bag she brought. She places to war the house and keep Ford safe, and John claims that it's for good luck. Ford asks John if Betty is a friend of his, and Mary watches as John says that he has more important things to do like find Carrie. The boy insists on going with them, and Mary tells Ford to stay there where it's safe. Ford figures that the bags are for more than look, and that the demon who took Carrie is real. Mary tells him that she and her friends kills monsters like the one he saw, and Ford asks if he can join their "club". She swears him to secrecy and tells him he can join the club, and then goes with John.
Ada and Carlos are in the van listening to a pirate DJ, Rockin' Roxy, and staking out a motel. Ada is fiddling with a bonsai tree and not paying attention, and Carlos complains that his lie is being wasted on a stakeout. The demon's partner yanks Carlos out of the van, and Carlos shoots him with his squirt gun filled with holy water and the toss the demon in the back of the van, which has a devil's trap drawn on the ceiling to trap it. The demon cheerfully greets Ada, who tells Carlos that they should take the demon someplace quiet so they can talk to it.
John and Mary take the scrap of fragment to the library, and Lata identifies the pattern Indian, and it came from someplace not far from where she was born. She says it's over a thousand years old, and there's only one monster she knows of that would lead the scrap behind. Its name is Father Sack, or Bori Baba. It's the equivalent of a Hindu bogeyman, and it lures its victims by tempting them with an item they lost that had deep meaning to them. It stays in one place, and likes taunting its victims and then eating them.
Mary finds the presence of a Hindu demon and the Columbian witch they fought suspicious, both when they're close to Lawrence. She points out that they started when the Akrida did, and they might be connected. Lata warns that there is no written lore about Father Sack, and her father passed on the lore verbally when she was a child. When John suggests that Lata talk to her father, Mary explains that Lata's parents died year ago, and she'll try to contact some other people back home.
At the Winchester home, there's a knock on the door and Ford goes to answer it. There's no one there, but as he starts to go inside, a sack lands on the porch. Ford opens it and finds a bracelet that Carrie owned. As Ford looks at it, an arm reaches out of him, pulls him into the bag, and the bag disappears.
John and Mary come back to the house and find Ford gone. Betty arrives and John answers the door. She says that John and Mary take their study group seriously, and she came to check on Ford. John says that Mary took Ford on a snack run. Meanwhile Mary finds the open door to the porch, and Mary's bracelet on it.
John tells Betty that he'll let Mary know that Betty stopped by, and starts to go in. Betty stops him and says that they agreed to talk when John got back from Vietnam. John says that something came up and Henry disappeared, and he's been wrapped up in that ever since. He assures Betty that there's no hard feelings on his part, and she tells John that she's there if she ever wants to stop. Betty leaves and John goes back inside. Mary calls him over Carrie's CB and tells him that Bori Baba lured Ford out of the house and took him. She figures that they don't have time to call the others, and is going to think of something she lost so Bori Baba takes her into the sack. She'll kill Bori Baba and John will get them out.
John runs over to the Billup house, while Mary kneels down and concentrates on what she lost. The bag appears in front of her, and she finds Sam's hat. John arrives moments after Mary is pulled into the bag.
Mary finds herself in Bori Baba's lair, puts on the hat, and looks around for Carrie and Ford.
Ada is mixing a paste in the back of the van, which Carlos has driven out to a clearing. She says that the demon, Slick, knows how the paste will get it to talk, and the demon says that he knows all about Ada's pathetic dreams. Ada tells Carlos that she's going to put the demon in the bonsai tree she's holding, and promises Slick that it won't be able to move or scream. Slick breaks and tells Ada to stop, and she asks how it and her partner knew about the box. Ada is skeptical, and Slick says that he and his partner went AWOL from Hell and made a deal with the Akrida to get them the box. In return the Akrida will let them live when it destroys everything else on the planet. Slick says that the Akrida leader is hiding inside a human, and all he knows is that it's a woman. He tells Carlos to exorcise it and send it back home, and Ada traps Slick in the bonsai tree anyway. Ada tells Carlos that Slick demon would have told the other demons about them, and now they have him handy in case they want to question it further.
John goes back to the library and tells Lata what happened. He plans to summon the demon, and points out that Lata found nothing about how to destroy Bori Baba. John says that he can't lose Mary, and none of it works without her. Lata says that there's one other person she could contact, but he might not want to help her. John tells her to take the show.
Ford and Carrie run through the lair, Carrie holding onto her doll, and Bori Baba catches up to them. Mary comes up behind them and cuts off its arm and head. As she checks on the children, Bori Baba regenerates and Mary tells the children to run. The hide in a storage unit and Mary tells them that her friends are looking for them.
Lata makes a phone call and tells the other person to tell her mother that they're safe. She hangs up and tells John that Bori Baba is vulnerable out of the sack. If they destroy Bori Baba, it will destroy the sack and everything in it, so they have to get Mary, Ford, and Carrie out first. Lata has also learned that Bori Baba's victims are trapped by their lost items, and they have to give them up to escape. John gets an idea and figures that a CB radio was lost somewhere. He goes to Carrie's room and calls Mary on the CB, and in the lair Mary hears John.
She leaves the storage room and finds a lost CB, and talks to John. Bori Baba starts pounding on the door Mary locked behind them, and John tells Mary that they have to willingly let go of their lost items. Carrie overhears and rips her doll in half, and Ford breaks the bracelet. They both disappear and reappear in Cassie's bedroom. Mary tries to burn the hat but it won't light. She tells John that Bori Baba that it lured her in with her father's hand, and it reaches under the door, grabs her ankle, and starts to pull her out.
Mary breaks free, goes back to the CB, and tries to burn the hat. It doesn't light, and John tells Mary that she has to let go of the search for Sam and what comes after. John reminds Mary of how they talked earlier, and Mary says that she figures if they find Sam then she's done hunting, and hunting is all she has. Mary explains that she was raised to hunting, and if she stops hunt then she doesn't know who she is. He tells her that it's scary considering what comes next, and all she has to is take that first step.
Bori Baba gets in, and Mary lets the hat burn. She disappears and reappears in the room, and the bag appears and Bori Baba emerges from it and shoes John. Lata shoves it back, and John gets up and cuts its throat. Carrie stomps on the body and says it's a stupid monster.
Ms. Billup returns and hugs her children. Betty and John look on, and John says that Carrie wondered off looking for her doll but never found it. The policewoman gives John a ring and says she should have given it back to him a long time ago. John says that they were too young, and Betty asks if they can be friends. He agrees and says that they'll always be friends, and Betty smiles and walks away.
Mary comes over and asks how things went, and Mary says that Mrs. Billup bought her story and the kids are sticking to it. She jokingly says that now Ford wants to hunt monsters, and John tells her that she did the hard part. John asks what's next for Mary, and she says that she's taking a break.
Mary goes to theater and when she comes up short, a man pays for her. He suggests that they see the movie alone together and Mary agrees.
At the library, John and Lata share beers and John congratulates Lata on facing her childhood nightmare. Lata figures that the two monsters must be connected. Carlos and Ada come in and tell them what they've learned. In her studio, Rockin' Roxy says that she's playing a new song that will bring hellraisers to Lawrence.
Outside, John burns the bag.
Mary and the man leave the theater together.
After John walks away, one of the dog-like demons comes up to the burning bag.
Carlos watches Ada plucking leaves off the bonsai tree.
Ada looks at the phone and then walks away.
The dog demon brings the remains of the bag to Roxy, who extracts a spark of magical energy from it and puts it into a bottle.
