The "Insidious" franchise shows no signs of stopping. There's both a spin-off movie and a new sequel on the way, and the most recent entry, "The Red Door," was a big hit in 2023. And for the most part, this horror series has remained strong. Not every film works, but the majority of the entries are solid scare-fests full of all sorts of spooky mayhem. The series kicked-off all the way back in 2011 with James Wan's "Insidious," and now here we are all these years later, still waiting for more. With that in mind, why don't we go back through the entire franchise so far and rank the titles, from worst to best? Come along with us into the Further and watch out for jump-scares.

Insidious might have had the shortest film retirement ever. Sony has set a release date for a sixth film in the franchise, August 29, 2025.
The news comes a little over a year after Blumhouse founder Jason Blum told Discussing Film that the fifth movie, Insidious: The Red Door, would be the last one "for a while." Adding that the franchise would go into a "very long rest," and potentially be revisited in ten years or so.
But to be fair to Blum, he did that interview before The Red Door made a killing at the box office, proving there is still fanfare for the popular horror franchise.
The Red Door, which marked star Patrick Wilson's directorial debut, outgrossed all four previous Insidious movies and became one of the highest-grossing horror movies of 2023, raking in over $189 million worldwide.
Sony did not reveal any plans for the sixth Insidious film, just the release date.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

James Wan took us into The Further when he directed the first two Insidious films a decade ago, now he’s set to take us… nowhere. Deadline reports that Wan’s production company Atomic Monster is behind an NBC series called Nowhere, which comes from Siberia and Emerald City creator Matthew Arnold. Arnold serves as creator, executive producer, and showrunner on the show, which is currently in development.
In addition to Atomic Monster, Vertigo Entertainment, Room 101, and Antihero Entertainment also have a hand in the development of Nowhere. Wan will be executive producing with Rob Hackett and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster, while Natalie Viscuso and Roy Lee executive produce for Vertigo, Steve Schneider executive produces for Room 101, and Aengus McLoone does the same for Antihero Entertainment. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

Jenna Ortega is only 21, but her bank balance exceeds our expected lifetime earnings! She rose to fame with her role in Jane The Virgin, but it was Netflix’s Wednesday that earned her worldwide recognition! Scroll below for a detailed analysis of her net worth in 2023.
It would be safe to say that Jenna has joined the league of Millie Bobby Brown, Billie Eilish, and other young artists who’ve achieved milestones at such a young age. Many wouldn’t know, but she made her film debut with a small role in Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3 (2013). Clearly, there was no going back, as she’s been a part of some famous movies like the Scream franchise, The Fallout, and Insidious: Chapter 2, among others.

"Insidious: The Red Door" may already be on VOD but the movie is continuing its incredible hot streak a the box office. The fifth entry in the series had already managed to secure its place as the highest-grossing entry in this particular franchise but now, it stands alone as the biggest horror movie of 2023 overall. Despite its digital release, the film had another solid weekend and gets to claim this coveted title -- at least for now.
Thanks to another $1 million weekend at the domestic box office, "The Red Door" has now earned $182.4 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. That means it now takes the crown as the highest-grossing horror movie of the year. The title previously belonged to "M3GAN," which earned $179.9 million earlier this year as one of 2023's first legitimate blockbuster hits. The difference is that "M3GAN" was an original movie that managed to break through the noise,...

With this weekend’s grosses, Sony/Screen Gems/Stage 6 Films/Blumhouse’s Insidious: The Red Door has become the biggest horror movie of the year globally at $182.5M. It edged the worldwide cume of Blumhouse’s own M3GAN ($180.8M) which is now the No. 2 horror title of 2023 to date. The current Red Door frame was worth $2.5M from 59 overseas markets for an international cume of $101.8M. Through Sunday, the Insidious franchise has earned over $735M worldwide.
Already last frame, the Patrick Wilson-directed and starring fifth in the series had become the highest-grossing of the 13-year-old franchise. The Red Door is a direct continuation of the first two movies and also stars Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins, Lin Shaye and Leigh Whannell.

We spent July discussing gender in a myriad of ways: cross-dressing serial killers in Insidious: Chapter 2 and Psycho, as well as trans representation in Escape Room: Tournament of Champions. To keep things in theme, we’re closing out the month with a look at Joshua Grannel‘s (aka drag queen Peaches Christ‘s) 2010 horror comedy All About Evil, which is currently streaming on Shudder!
All About Evil sees an unhinged theatre owner named Deborah (Natasha Lyonne) begin making snuff films and screening them at her decrepit San Francisco theater — presenting them as fictional works — in order to prevent the theater from going bankrupt. Unfortunately for Deborah, her biggest fan (Thomas Dekker) catches on to her scheme and tries to stop her before her antics get his mother (Cassandra Peterson) killed.

It’s nearly time to close out the month of July, which has been another scorching hot one for Trace and me. We kicked things off with Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) to coincide with our coverage of The Red Door, then we talked about another sequel to celebrate the two-year anniversary of Adam Robitel’s Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021).
Now we’re up to a huge milestone: Alfred Hitchcock‘s Psycho (1960) aka one of the original slasher prototypes. In the iconic film, Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) steals $40K from her crappy job before stopping at the abandoned Bates Motel. There she meets young proprietor Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) who seems a little…off.
Unfortunately for Marion, soon afterward she’s brutally murdered in the shower by Mother, setting off a chain reaction as first private investigator Arbogast (Martin Balsam), then Marion’s lover Sam Loomis (John Gavin) and her...

The horror genre — like any other — has its stock characters: the creepy child, the father-on-the-edge, the wise mystic. When done poorly, these archetypes are basically a vehicle for forgettable scream-in-the-dark fun. When done well, they’re flesh-and-blood people you worry about from film to film, hoping that someday their suffering will end — well, at least after a few movies.

For the first time in five years, the Insidious franchise is back on the big screen with Insidious: The Red Door, a brand new sequel to the first two movies that was directed by franchise star Patrick Wilson. When it comes to horror movies at the box office, Sony resurrected its track record this past weekend with the opening of Blumhouse/Stage 6 Films’ fifthquel, Insidious: The Red Door which had a $32.65M domestic opening, $64M Worldwide debut.
On the domestic front, that’s the second best horror opening for Sony after 2004’s The Grudge which debuted to $39.1M. It’s also the second best domestic debut for an Insidious movie after Chapter 2‘s $40.2M opening. Even more amazing, this 13-year-old horror franchise stole the No. 1 thunder away from Disney/Lucasfilm’s legacy sequel Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which only did $26.5M in weekend two.
While Sony pre-pandemic had horror sleepers such as Don’t Breathe and Escape Room, the Culver City lot wasn’t reaping the riches of genre post Covid like Paramount, Universal and Warner Bros. Now, Sony has posted a U.S./Canada start...

Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is barely winning an unexpectedly close race with “Insidious: The Red Door” on international box office charts, with each film collecting roughly $31 million over the weekend.
Based on Sunday’s estimates, “Indiana Jones 5” is ever-so-slightly ahead of “Insidious 5” with $31.8 million for Harrison Ford’s swashbuckling adventure and $31.4 million for Sony’s paranormal horror story.
“The Red Door” easily took town “Dial of Destiny” at the domestic box office, with the former earning $32.6 million in its debut. It marked the second-best opening weekend of the franchise behind 2013’s “Insidious: Chapter 2” ($40 million).
Overseas, the newest “Insidious” movie managed to secure the best start for a horror film in pandemic times, as well as the biggest start of the supernatural-horror series in comparable markets. Top markets include Mexico ($5.8 million) the Philippines ($3.7 million) and the U.K. ($2.8 million).

Big summer tentpoles continue to struggle at the domestic box office, where a horror pic took down Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Insidious: The Red Door opened to an estimated $32.7 million to win the July 7-9 weekend, beating out Indy 5, which fell to No. 2 in its sophomore outing with an estimated $26.5 million.
The Red Door overperformed despite weak reviews, scoring the second-best domestic opening of the series behind 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2 ($40.3 million), not adjusted for inflation. Overseas, the movie also did frightfully well, grossing $31.4 million for a global bow of $64.1 million against a reported budget of just $16 million.
Heading into the weekend, prerelease tracking had suggested that the fifth and final Insidious installment, helmed by series star Patrick Wilson in his feature directorial debut, would earn $25 million or more. Screen Gems partnered with Stage 6 Films and Blumhouse on the horror pic, which reteams the original cast,...

Indiana Jones had a short-lived box office reign. Disney’s action-adventure “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” dropped to the No. 2 spot in its second weekend of release, earning $26.5 million from 4,600 North American theaters. It was dethroned by Sony’s horror-thriller “Insidious: The Red Door,” which beat expectations with its $32.6 million debut from 3,188 venues.
Ticket sales for “Indiana Jones,” the fifth and final installment to star Harrison Ford’s swashbuckling adventurer, declined by 56% from its $60 million opening weekend, continuing the theatrical misfortunes for the nearly $300 million-budgeted movie. “Dial of Destiny” added $31.8 million at the international box office, bringing worldwide ticket sales to $247.9 million. It has a long and winding journey to get out of the red, at least in its box office run.
The fifth “Insidious” movie cost just $16 million to make, so it’s already reaping big rewards in its box office run. That improves on the start of its predecessor,...

“Insidious” is a strange franchise in that it has often been overshadowed by James Wan’s other Patrick Wilson-starring supernatural haunting series (“The Conjuring”). Also, after two installments from Film District and another two from Comcast, “Insidious: The Red Door” comes courtesy of Sony. They are certainly pulling their weight if Thursday previews are any indication.
The Patrick Wilson-directed installment is the first present-tense sequel since “Insidious: Chapter 2” in 2013 as “Chapter 3” in 2015 and “The Last Key” in 2018 were prequels giving a spotlight to Lin Shaye’s ghostbuster. Absence has apparently made the heart grow fonder, as this one nabbed $5 million in Thursday previews. For reference, the last three “Insidious” films earned $5.18 million in Thursday previews *combined*.
The Sony/Screen Gems/Stag 6/Blumhouse entry, set a decade after “Insidious: Chapter 2” and serving as a quasi-legacy sequel for the main haunted Lambert family, pulled a better Thursday figure than...

Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth installment of the Insidious franchise and helmed by actor-turned-director Patrick Wilson, promises a dive into the haunted memories of the past, but the script by Scott Teems delivers little more than a stifling yawn. Alongside Wilson, the film stars Ty Simpkins, Rose Bryne and Sinclair Daniel.
The film begins where Insidious 2 concluded, with Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his suppressed memories of “The Further.” It then abruptly shifts to the solemn setting of the funeral of Josh’s mother, Lorraine (played by Barbara Hershey in previous films). While Dalton (Simpkins), Josh’s oldest son, reads from Scripture, the estranged Josh and Renai (Bryne) and other siblings wrestle with their loss. Also at the funeral, an encounter with Carl (played by Steve Coulter in previous films), the man responsible for erasing Josh’s memories, highlights the depths of Josh’s amnesia.

Update, 2:20Pm: Disney/Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny officially wins Tuesday with $11.698M over Sound of Freedom‘s reported $11.5M. Monday revised on Dial of Destiny was $11.7M, which means business was even on July 4th; and that’s solid for any tentpole on that holiday. 5-day on Dial of Destiny is $83.7M.
Previous: Angels Studios’ Jim Caviezel thriller Sound of Freedom, came on strong Tuesday and gave Disney/Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny a run for its money at the domestic box office. However, until actuals are reported, it remains to be seen who won on July 4th, with both distributors reporting $11.5 million.
Rival distributors off their own calculations see Sound of Freedom as a clear No. 2 in its opening yesterday with $11M at 2,634 theaters, with Indy winning the day.

July 2023 launched with a fairly disappointing weekend ahead of the 4th of July, and this weekend, three new movies – one a sequel, the other two original – take on the second weekend of Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Even with three new films in wide release this weekend, it doesn’t feel like any of them have the strength to really make much of an impact against Indy, so we probably can expect “Indiana Jones” to win a second weekend with between $24 and 26 million.
As far as the new entries, we first have “Insidious: The Red Door,” the fifth movie in the horror franchise launched by James Wan and Leigh Whannell 13 years ago, starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins. All three are back for “The Red Door” with Wilson making his directorial debut for a...

The summer movie season explodes this July with three hugely anticipated movies and several others hoping to make any sort of splash. Will “Mission Impossible 7,” “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer” become the next money-making behemoth? Read on for Gold Derby’s July 2023 box office preview.
“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” – July 12
Tom Cruise returns to theaters after a much-deserved victory lap for “saving movie theaters” with last year’s mega-blockbuster hit, “Top Gun: Maverick.” That movie returned him to one of his biggest early roles from the ’80s, but “Mission Impossible” has been one of Cruise’s most reliable franchises in the time since he first played Ethan Hunt in 1996. The 2018 installment, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” also directed by Christopher McQuarrie, was well received, opening with $61 million and grossing $786.6 million worldwide, a franchise high. The demonic daytime scares of the "Insidious" franchise are back for a fifth installment, "Insidious: The Red Door," due out in theaters on July 7, 2023. In 2011, James Wan's original film proved that a PG-13 horror movie could actually be scary, mostly thanks to the toothy grin of The Lipstick Face Demon that terrorized the Lambert family.
In "Insidious: The Red Door," the story picks up 10 years after the events of "Insidious: Chapter 2," with Josh and Renai (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) getting ready to send their now adult son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) to art school. Dalton is still dealing with the psychological effects of combatting supernatural forces as a child, and his paintings seem to awaken the same forces that are determined to take over his body, mind, and soul.

The mythology and chronology of the "Insidious" film series can be a little difficult to follow, and might require a careful walkthrough leading into the forthcoming "Insidious: The Red Door," due in theaters on July 7, 2023.
In James Wan's 2011 original, a married couple named Josh and Renai (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) found their young son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) stalked by scary, supernatural forces. When Dalton falls into a coma, Josh and Renai call in a trio of paranormal investigators in the form of Elsie Rainier (Lin Shaye) and her two nerdy assistants, Specs and Tucker (screenwriter Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson). Elsie explains that Dalton has the ability to astrally project, sending his disembodied consciousness out into the world while he sleeps. Dalton, however, unwittingly sent his mind into a purgatorial afterlife realm called The Further (the italics are part of the film's established lore). While inside, Dalton attracted the ghosts that live there,...

The actor has stepped behind the camera for the Sony horror thriller “Insidious: The Red Door,” a sequel to “Insidious” and “Insidious: Chapter 2,” both of which starred Wilson. This is the fifth film in the “Insidious” franchise and on Wednesday, Sony debuted the first trailer for the summer release.
Here’s the Sony logline: “In ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ the horror franchise’s original cast returns for the final chapter of the Lambert family’s terrifying saga. To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing their family’s dark past and a host of new and more horrifying terrors that lurk behind the red door.”

To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing their family’s dark past and a host of new and more horrifying terrors that lurk behind the red door.”

It looks like some demons are harder to get rid of than others.
The first official trailer for the fifth installment of the mainstay horror franchise “Insidious” reveals a new demonic side of the jinxed Lambert family.
“Insidious: The Red Door” picks up 10 years after “Insidious: Chapter 2,” showcasing some familiar faces from its predecessors. At the end of the second movie, it seems as though the Lambert family has shed their satanic visions. Fast forward to the modern day, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins) are back to face a new set of problems — like Dalton’s first year at college and a fresh group of nightmarish monsters.
While these two have been able to steer clear of The Further for a decade, all that is about to change when they are forced to confront their demons once again. What lies behind the red door? The Lambert...

Jenna Ortega is living the dream with the title role in Netflix’s smash hit Wednesday, but she has revealed she very nearly turned down the role.
Tim Burton’s supernatural comedy horror telling the story of young Wednesday Addams’ coming of age beat Stranger Things for the most amount of streamer hours watched in its first week on Netflix, where it became the second most watched English-language show in the platform’s history.
In her title role, Ortega has swiftly become a global star, not least for her dance scene in the fourth episode, which has become a TikTok craze, her fans across the world creating their own versions.
Now, Ortega – who showed off her comedic chops on this weekend’s Saturday Night Live – has revealed she initially wasn’t interested in the role.
She told the UK’s Times:
“No, I didn’t. I got the email, passed on it.

What’s your favorite scary movie?
Well, “Scream VI” star Jenna Ortega already has a list of her go-to horror films.
The “X” and “Wednesday” actress made her debut in the “Scream” franchise with 2022’s fifth installment. A newly-minted scream queen (literally), Ortega’s lifelong love of horror and gore has framed her decade-spanning career.
“I love horror films. I don’t know what it is about having blood thrown on your face and running around screaming bloody murder,” Ortega said during “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” in January 2023. “It really is so therapeutic, so much fun.”
However, Ortega has never pigeonholed herself solely as a one-note horror actress.
“I never really considered it because a lot of what I do is horror, and they all have these moody and nasty qualities, but what I love is that they also have a sassy teenage nature,” Ortega told Who What Wear.

Ti West's film "X" is set in Texas in 1979 and follows an aspiring troupe of adult filmmakers who aim to shoot their X-rated magnum opus at a remote, secluded farm, outside the purview of the rest of the adult industry. Audiences will immediately intuit that the character will be summarily stalked and killed; "X" is, after all, a slasher film. The killer in question is the owner of the farm, an octogenarian named Pearl, who is driven to envy-inspired murder by the youthful energy and unashamed lust the filmmakers bring onto her property. In an unusual twist of casting, Pearl is played by a makeup-shrouded Mia Goth, who also plays a young adult actor named Maxine Minx.
The horror elements of "X" are standard slasher fare, with characters wandering off alone into dark areas only to be transformed into future forensic evidence by blades and blunt objects. The more...

This post contains spoilers for Netflix's "Wednesday" series.
2022 has been a banner year for Jenna Ortega. While she's been working for a decade now, it wasn't until her roles in "Jane the Virgin" and "You" that she caught the world's attention. She's since appeared in several shows, including "Big City Greens," and a slew of high-profile films, such as "Scream" (2022) and "X." Along with excellent turns in "The Fallout" and Netflix's "Wednesday," Ortega has commanded the conversation. She's more than a scream queen: Ortega is the moment.
Ortega's body of work also includes appearances in television series like "Stuck in the Middle" and roles in "Insidious: Chapter 2" and "The Babysitter: Killer Queen." Her other credits this year include "Carnage" and "Studio 666," a Dave Grohl-produced horror-comedy. Whenever Ortega appears on screen, you'll know it. She draws you into her world with performances that are grounded, authentic, and complex.

You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

If you’re looking for a fright-filled marathon this weekend, look no further than the Insidious movies.
If you’re a fan of horror movies, then you’ve probably heard of the Insidious franchise. The four films in the series are all connected, and they tell a chilling story of ghosts, demonic possession, and hauntings.
Whether you’re revisiting the Insidious films or watching them for the first time, there are two options for the viewing order: following the exact release dates or allowing the narrative to unfold chronologically.
You can’t go wrong with either option; however, a chronological viewing may be more appealing if you want to learn all prequel backstories before getting involved with the characters. The story of the franchise revolves around the lambert family and Elise Rainier, who help the family try to get away from the evil spirits in the house.
