This is the most frustrating tedious Ninja Gaiden NES game to play.

Warning: Spoilers
I have played Ninja Gaiden on NES on the Wii U virtual console, on the NES mini and on Famicom Mini and I don't like replaying it very much.

Level 1 and 2 are easy to play through but enter level 3 it starts to get tough with enemies constantly re-spawning and bashing your Ninja character. I hate having to fight enemies with unpredictable patterns especially with the eagle enemies or the monsters that continuously jump over you, fighting soldiers with machine guns, and those annoying flying ninjas makes this game hell to play though.

By the way, you cannot stab upward with your sword, seriously they should've allowed Ryu to stab upwards especially with flying enemies overhead. At least in The Adventures of Link, Link can stab above or below him and Kid Icarus can fire upwards and Metroid can fire upwards.

I don't like levels 4, 5 and 6 since the enemies come swarming all over you and you get bashed and knocked back, I hate video games where your player gets shoved back especially when it makes them fall in the pits. The final boss on level 6 is a chore to beat and you'll want to fill up your level meter to 99 because if you don't, good luck fighting it with your crummy sword reach which was later fixed in Ninja Gaiden 3. Oh and you'll want to farm extra lives about 30 or more on level 5. Also you'll have to fight 3 bosses on Level 6 before you get the ending which will usually make you start stage 6 all over.

I liked the story about Ryu's father disappearing and he has to hunt down a statue to prevent the demon from taking over the world, he gets ambushed by Irene who later becomes his girlfriend, Foster has Ryu working for him before he later reveals himself to be a villain. I like the highly detailed cutscenes which was impressive back in the 1980s. Also to note this is a T rated game due to the violence shown in the cutscenes with Dr. Smiths death and ending with Ryu's father gets killed and featuring a scary demon villain. It also used the word "Thank God" during the Nintendo censorship era.

I would've liked this game if Ryu could've kept the fireball shield or be able to choose which magic powers to swap out which would've made this game so much easier to play. I do like the ninja stars and upwards fire thrower but I still don't like the gaming torture this game is even on the Famicom version. Yes this is available on the Wii U virtual console and the NES mini and Famicom Mini.

But for those who are Ninja Gaiden fans, I would suggest to video game players to play the Ninja Gaiden 2 and Ninja Gaiden 3 sequels on NES since they are much better games and much easier to play. Don't play Ninja Gaiden 1 unless you like the 2-D platform gaming torture and it will make you frustrated. Better yet, watch Ninja Gaiden NES on youtube or the cutscenes since it would save you from playing this lousy hard video game.
