Aerial Fighter
This is another under the radar gem. Yeah, this shump doesn't light the skies on fire, it's another on the B list, but nothing wrong with that only it's just plain fun which this is.
To me what makes this game unique is really in the type of shump it is which is a WW2 shump which is cool as I honestly don't see much of those in the shump genre, let alone ones that are vertical shumps. But also, the fact that you're controlling a fighter plane as in most of the shumps you're always controlling most of the time a jet fighter or a space ship.
The graphical presentation is solid, I like the detail to the planes and the background from the ground to the sky, really brings the feeling of the battlefield of yesteryear. You have a good decent assortment of enemy vehicles and obstacles to blow away, from the ground each are stationed in different ways. Planes in the air come in different squadrons with different maneuvers that are always too slow to shoot back at you, however it's their odds and maneuver patterns that make them deadly. And there are even some of the bigger tougher planes and vehicles that take a lot of shots to take out.
The boss battles are also good where it's always some oversized vehicle, no surprise as it's always a requirement in the shmups for the big finish to each level. Though one battle that stands out is the battleship, that one is slightly tough as you move forward and backward to destroy the whole battleship.
The music in the game is also solid, there are some good tracks that just sing out exciting arial assault action from the first to even the second level. Let alone even like the sounds of the game from the explosions of the planes and other vehicles, but also the sound of picking up the power ups, it just sounds cool.
The gameplay is spot on much like with any shmup it's your typical basic control of controlling the plane and shooting everything that moves and that shoots back at you. There is a little variety in the levels as you have ones where your completely in the air but others where you're flying near the ground and sea.
You have weapons but mainly for your secondary weapon, you have none for your primary, but it's not needed. Each of the weapons for the secondary have strengths and weaknesses from the drop bombs for the turrets and ground/low land assault units or even missiles for the targets in the air. One other unique thing about this game is that, if you collect the same kind of secondary weapon enough times then that weapon strengthens where you can drop more bombs or fire more missiles than before.
Overall, it's a solid shump, if you're looking for another vintage shump for your collection this game is worth a whirl.
