Here's a film that looks at the "struggling comedian" and no I'm not referring to that hilarious comic who's been touring with Yuk Yuks or some other comedy club chain waiting for that big HBO break. These guys "really struggle". Anyone who's ever tried anything and been told they simply aren't good enough to be trying it anymore should watch this film. "No Joke" is the story of three comedians from Vancouver, BC, who despite being pretty much shunned from local audiences and comedians alike, still manage to pursue their dream of one day making it. For the purpose of the documentary the filmmaker Matt Frame, along with the bizarre Vibrato 3.70 the human vibrator (You'll see), take the comics on a mini tour of the states to see if there's a different response to their comedic aspirations or if in fact they just suck. When the camera cuts away from a punchline to an audience member that may as well be a deer in headlights, I don't think it's possible to not laugh out loud no matter how bad you feel for the comic. The heart of No Joke was the humor of it all for me. Sure, they're not the best comics but as people they managed to make me laugh a lot and they were all interesting and complex individuals. Some of the jokes are just plain offensive and bordering if not crossing over to unacceptable instances of disturbing the peace, but it's these scenes that create a sense of danger and suspense in a film that made me laugh in one instance and be outraged or teary eyed in the next. The ending has a real life (After all it is a documentary) unforeseeable WTF? feeling to it which will take you off guard. I highly recommend this documentary and you don't even have to be into stand up to enjoy it.
