Emulating what many are expecting at next week’s Emmy Awards nominations, FX’s “The Bear” topped the field with 15 bids followed by Max’s “Hacks” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” with 13 apiece for the Astra TV Awards. The above comedies were followed in the overall nominations tally by ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” CBS’s “Ghosts” and Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” with 11 honors each, while the Prime Video freshman drama “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” also came in at double-digits with 10. Leading the way for limited series were a pair of Netflix offerings, “Baby Reindeer” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” along with Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” – all with seven bids apiece.

Has it really been almost 10 years since director John Crowley made the beautiful, aching drama "Brooklyn," starring Saoirse Ronan? Man, time is wild. Speaking of which, time seems to be a major component of Crowley's latest movie, an R-rated romantic comedy called "We Live in Time" that stars Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, two of the best actors working today. Longtime fans of Crowley's work will recall that he previously worked with Andrew Garfield on 2007's "Boy A," so it'll be especially fascinating to see what their new collaboration yields all these years later. All of these elements, plus the fact that the film hails from the ultra-hot indie studio A24, put this on our radar months ago as a potential "favorite film of 2024" candidate, and the first trailer, which was just released, does nothing to change that assessment.

The 2024 Emmy nominations announcement being just one week away means that Gold Derby users have been shaping the odds in the 12 main acting races for over five months. At the end of June, eight of the initial dozen frontrunners could be credited with maintaining their top positions all season, but the same now applies to only six of them, all but one of whom are men.
The lone female February frontrunner left standing is Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), whose victory on her second consecutive drama supporting actress bid seems quite assured. As of this week, she is generally expected to be joined in the winners’ circle by two-time comedy lead champ Jean Smart (“Hacks”), who started the season on top before being usurped by Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) a few weeks in. Now, two months after winning the favor of our Top 24 Users, Smart is every Gold Derby predictor subgroup’s first choice.

If there is any agreement among Emmy pundits this awards season, it’s the fact that perhaps the most competitive collection of categories surrounds the limited series genre, where an embarrassment of riches promises a dogfight among an abundant list of worthy nominees in Best Limited Series and the four limited/made-for-tv movie acting lineups. During a limited-focused slugfest debate in advance of the Emmy nominations announcement on July 17, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were all in agreement that Gold Derby pacesetter “Baby Reindeer” is a worthy frontrunner that’s likely to ultimately take the top limited prize (assuming it is in fact nominated). But they were all over the map on how the rest of that category shaped up as well as how the performer slots were poised to shake out. While there are a...

Quentin Tarantino regularly talks about the movies and TV shows he loves, for example, he named The Social Network and Dunkirk as the best projects of the 2010s. And the director is willing to talk endlessly about his favorite movies, which include both period dramas like There Will Be Blood and trashy B-movies.
In one of the interviews, the director harshly criticized the modern crime classic True Detective, calling it "boring," but at the same time he shared a series he liked so much that he watched it three times.
And that show is The Newsroom, created and written by Aaron Sorkin – the same man who wrote the screenplay for The Social Network, which Tarantino praised so highly. Quentin said:

This year, several streaming services, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+, flooded the screens with a wide array of high-quality content. Network shows also gave viewers some all-time great TV shows, setting a high standard to beat.
This year, FX’s historical drama series Shōgun and Netflix miniseries Baby Reindeer became the most talked-about shows in a long time, dominating conversation at every social gathering. Fans would be surprised to discover that the show made it to the top five highest-ranked series of 2024, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
We have to give a special shout to Issa López’s True Detective: Night Country( Number 15 on Rotten Tomatoes) and Amazon’s Fallout (Number 16), which failed to make the top 5 but was one of the best shows TV had to offer this year.

There may have not been as much television in 2024 so far as in previous years, but there was a Hell of a lot of great TV in the first half of this year.
The harsh beauty of FX’s Shōgun, the depths of Baby Reindeer and Big Mood, the wit of Diarra from Detroit, and the surprising scope of X-Men ’97 set a very high standard. The icy reset that is the Issa López created True Detective: Night Country was another such high. Add to that the historical script flip of The Sympathizer, the sometimes brutal honestly of Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, Diane Lane and Jeff Daniels’ masterclass in A Man in Full, and the barrier drop kicking of Echo.
So, if you are looking for some true creative fireworks this Independence Day, may I suggest casting your eyes over our selection of some of the best new shows of 2024 so far.

Everyone knows that Quentin Tarantino didn't go to film school – he went to the movies.
But he hasn't always left the movie theater happy. Like any movie buff, the director not only watches movies, but also TV series (obviously), and even projects that are now considered modern classics were not to Tarantino's taste. Take the first season of True Detective, for example.
Tarantino Didn't Appreciate True Detective At All
In a lengthy interview with Vulture, he shared his impressions of the cult series, and they will definitely not please devoted fans of Nic Pizzolatto's anthology:
“I tried to watch the first episode of season one, and I didn’t get into it at all. I thought it was really boring. And season two looks awful.”
The fans of True Detective should not be upset: the specific taste of the author of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill has been known for a long time,...

Over the weekend, my phone blew up with texts from TV comedy writers who were in the middle of watching the latest season of The Bear. Some were enjoying the new episodes, others were frustrated by them, but not one person said this story of toxic workplaces, addiction and mental illness, and ruinous personal relationships was a barrel of laughs — this despite the fact that FX, Hulu, and Emmy voters everywhere continue to consider it a comedy. As one writer put it, “I like the show a lot, but it...

Although 2023 Emmy nominations voters were able to view the entire second season of “The Bear” while judging the merits of its first, the team behind the FX series did not employ a similar strategy in 2024. Nonetheless, the newly released third season will still influence TV academy members as they spend part of August deciding whether season two is worthy of any wins. The latest episodes have already impacted the mindsets of Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy predictors, who have collectively boosted its odds in several categories over the past week.

Erin, known for her role on Amazon Prime's The Boys, has even addressed what she called "bullying" remarks, and it looks like some fans had read what she had to say.

Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective is arguably one of the best crime shows ever made. Despite the mixed reception of the show’s latter seasons, the first installment remains a fan favorite, most notably for its tightly wrapped narrative, which is layered with several mysteries that unfold from the perspective of complex characters.
True Detective season 1 almost left out two major characters from earlier episodes (Credit: HBO).
However, the first season almost made a fatal mistake that would have nearly cost it all the universal critical acclaim that made it so iconic in the first place. One detail mentioned in the show’s bible from creator Pizzolatto hinted that an important subplot was to be introduced much later in the season. Here is why that would have been a fatal mistake and how avoiding it worked in the interest of True Detective season 1.

After The Penguin‘s Max release this year, the new change in the delineation of Max and HBO shows will come into effect from 2025. Most of the Warner Bros. IP films will essentially move under the HBO banner, including one much anticipated Dcu series under James Gunn. According to an insider report, Lanterns will now be an HBO feature and other major Dcu series projects may also follow suit.

Gunn recently announced the writing team of the series, which included DC writer Tom King, Lost creator Damon Lindelof, and Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy. Lindelof and Mundy are notably associated with several HBO projects, making the latest project even more suitable for the network.

Alexandra Daddario was solidly in chill mode as she updated her Instagram with boat photos today. Yesterday evening, the news broke that DC Studios' Lanterns has received an eight-episode, straight-to-series order from HBO. No longer a Max streaming series, all signs point to this being the Green Lantern reboot we've spent well over a decade waiting for.
Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) is serving as showrunner and executive producer and will write Lanterns with Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book scribe Tom King (Supergirl).
The latter has broken his silence on the news today with a lengthy Instagram post which sees the Eisner Award winner drop some hints about what fans can expect from Hal Jordan and John Stewart's first live-action team-up.
Finally can talk about what I’ve been working on for the past year and more. From DC Studios and Warner Bros, we’re bringing Lanterns to HBO.

Yesterday was the brightest day for a certain type of nerd. Not only did Variety announce that Lanterns, the television series based on Green Lantern, was given the green light for an eight-episode first season, but comic book writer Tom King and Damon Lindelof of Lost and The Leftovers fame would join True Detective: Night Country producer Chris Mundy as writers and producers.
Yet, what will the average viewer think of when they hear about a new Green Lantern live action show? They’ll imagine Ryan Reynolds sitting in front of a garish green object and saying, “I Hal Jordan do solemnly swear to pledge allegiance to a lantern that I got from a dying purple alien.”
Reynolds’ usual snarky delivery isn’t the only problem with 2011’s Green Lantern. The effects were ugly, Jordan was written as a jerk, and the movie relied on exposition to explain its lore.

The DC Studios head James Gunn announced a Green Lantern series under his new DC Universe. And HBO has officially picked up the series. Executive producers Damon Lindelof and Tom King, alongside showrunner Chris Mundy, will guide the series as it follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart of the Green Lantern Corps.

The series is expected to follow the Lanterns finding themselves embroiled in a dark, terrestrial mystery investigating a murder in America’s heartland. Previously portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the lackluster 2011 film, expectations are high for the series to redeem the Green Lantern legacy and deliver DC’s finest superhero storytelling yet.

Ozark’s Chris Mundy will be the showrunner on a new HBO series based on Green Lantern. He’ll co-write Lanterns with Damon Lindelof and Tom King.
After years in gestation, a new TV series based on the Green Lantern comic books has been given the go-ahead at HBO. Called Lanterns, it’ll run for eight episodes and will be headed up by Chris Mundy, previously the showrunner for the hit series Ozark and the producer on True Detective: Night Country.
Mundy will co-write the episodes with Damon Lindelof (whose best-known work is arguably Lost) and Tom King, who’s written a staggering number of comics over the past 20 years or so, mostly for DC.

The Green Lantern's finally got the green light! Per THR's reporting, John Stewart and Hal Jordan — two iconic bearers of DC's Green Lantern mantle — are headed to the small screen in Lanterns, an eight episode drama that's landed a straight-to-series order at HBO. The project, spearheaded by the powerhouse creative trio of showrunner Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) and co-writers Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and DC Comics legend Tom King, will be the first live-action TV show in James Gunn and Peter Safran's all-new DC Universe.

Arguably the closest race at this year’s Emmys, at least according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, is Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress, which as of this writing appears to be a three-way contest between Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country“), Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo“) and Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer“). Reis has the slight edge so far with 11/2 odds, while Leigh and Gunning are tied at 6/1 odds.

But our odds don’t tell the whole story. Reis is ahead for now because of how strong the consensus is that she will at least be nominated. Meanwhile, not quite as many people are certain of Gunning’s nomination, but more of them believe she’ll win. In fact, almost every predictions group favors Gunning for the win: Experts, Editors, Top 24 Users and All-Star Top 24. Leigh is actually ahead...

The development of a Green Lantern project has seen some black nights over the years, but the bright green light of day is closer than ever. HBO has given a straight-to-series order for Lanterns, an eight-episode television event first announced as part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios roadmap last year.
True Detective: Night Country executive producer/writer Chris Mundy will serve as showrunner, co-writing alongside Damon Lindelof and Eisner Award-winning comic scribe Tom King (who’s also getting a “based on” credit for the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film). All three will also serve as executive producers on Lanterns, a crime drama centered on the iconic characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
Bringing on Mundy and Lindelof aligns with what Safran and Gunn previously shared about the show. “Our vision is much more True Detective, terrestrial-based investigation story,” Safran said when announcing the series in 2023. Indeed,...

Lanterns, the long-awaited Green Lantern series, has officially been given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order by HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios. Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) will serve as showrunner and executive producer and will co-write the series alongside Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Tom King (Supergirl), who will also executive produce.
The series “follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” I can’t say I expected the first major live-action Green Lantern project in over a decade to involve an earth-based murder mystery, but that said, I am down for whatever Mundy, Lindelof, and King are cooking up. Lanterns was originally set to debut as a Max Original series, but all of the studio’s big-budget, tentpole IP projects have now been moved to HBO.

Well, it’s official, and James Gunn’s DC Studios plan is slowly moving forward. Today, HBO and Max confirmed that it’s picked up an eight-episode Green Lantern series for a season one pick-up. The series comes from Emmy-nominee Chris Mundy, who will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Emmy-winner Damon Lindelof (HBO’s “Watchmen” and “The Leftovers”) and Eisner Award winner Tom King will co-write the new series with Mundy.

To paraphrase a long-running network slogan, “It’s Not Max. It’s HBO.” HBO and Max content CEO Casey Bloys is changing the delineation between what an “HBO show” and a “Max show” is, moving most of Max’s upcoming big-budget, tentpole Warner Bros. IP projects to under the HBO umbrella.
That means the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV show, as well as the “It” prequel series “Welcome to Derry” and the just-announced Green Lantern adaptation “Lanterns” — in other words, major DC franchise and other big-budget titles — will all now be branded as HBO originals.
This is a switch from the most recent decision to place all series based on Warner Bros. IP in the Max bucket, which was first established when Bloys added oversight of Max in 2020.
“We felt like we had to delineate between an HBO show and a Max show,” Bloys said of that initial distinction. “The idea...

HBO is at long last signing up with the Lantern Corps.
The premium cable outlet has given a straight-to-series order for Lanterns, based on the long-running Green Lantern characters — specifically John Stewart and Hal Jordan — from DC Comics. Chris Mundy (Ozark) will serve as showrunner on the eight-episode drama and co-write the series with Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost) and Eisner Award winner Tom King, known for his work on several Batman titles, Mister Miracle and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for DC Comics.
The (ahem) green light for Lanterns comes almost five years after what was then HBO Max began developing a Green Lantern series with producer Greg Berlanti — the mastermind of the DC Arrow-verse on The CW and one of the writers of the 2011 Green Lantern feature film that starred Ryan Reynolds. The first swing at the series was set to focus on Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and Alan Scott.

The fact that the 76th Emmy nominations voting round ended on Monday means that Gold Derby’s users have had over 10 days to make their picks in five categories that were previously not included in our predictions center. After taking very little time to form, these new consensus lineups have remained virtually unchanged for nearly two weeks, presumably because they generally consist of tried-and-true contenders and almost exclusively align with the prospect of repeat wins.
Based on the predictions of all 3,000 of our participating readers, the only major change that has occurred in the five new categories since voting opened is “Top Chef” presenter Kristen Kish’s displacement of Gordon Ramsay (“Next Level Chef”) in the Best Reality/Competition Host lineup. A closer examination of the opinions of our predictor subgroups reveals more discrepancies, including that our editors stand alone in still backing Ramsay and forecasting a second consecutive Best...

Many said as much when it first debuted, back in May 2021, and many more have discovered its incomparable beauty, power, and grace in the years since. On June 25, The Criterion Collection will recognize the series by releasing a four-disc Blu-ray set — marking its physical media debut — complete with audio commentary by Jenkins, his companion film “The Gaze,” deleted scenes, making-of featurettes, a graphic novel adaptation of an unfilmed episode, and more.
Being featured in a collection as prestigious as Criterion’s — which Jenkins himself compared to the Library of Congress, saying, “This is where films go to live forever” — will undoubtedly introduce “The Underground Railroad” to even more viewers. It deserves them, just as it deserves to join the exclusive collection featuring heralded titles (with ties to TV) like “Dekalog,” “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me,” and “Small Axe.

Jodie Foster recently chatted with “The Bikeriders” star Jodie Comer for Interview magazine and got honest about her relationship to acting. The two-time Oscar winner for best actress admitted that she’s “never fell in love with the acting part” of her career and the “technical sides of filmmaking” have always interested her more.
“I’ve always made movies by myself, where it was just about my character, and I didn’t have to deal with the other actors,” Foster said. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to understand that was selfish of me, jealously guarding something that I didn’t want to share. Now I’m learning to enter in and say, ‘How are we together and dynamic?’ Instead of it all being about me. It has been so interesting, because now I meet all these actors that do everything differently.”

Jodie Foster is one of the most beloved actresses of her generation, a two-time Oscar winner who got her start as a pre-teen and has continued giving strong performances for more than 50 years. But unlike so many actresses, Foster has shied away from the stage…and you can blame John Hinckley, Jr. for that.
But first, some context. Remember, Hinckley is the would-be assassin of then-President Ronald Reagan, firing six shots at Reagan in a limp-dicked attempt to woo Jodie Foster in 1981. Obviously the event – and the aftermath – scarred Foster, who has rarely commented on the incident. “He shot him in order to impress me, and he had written letters to me, so it was a big moment in my life. The world fell apart, there were Secret Service people everywhere, I had bodyguards, and I had to be taken to a safe house.”

What makes a show popular? Well, of course a strong story at the center of it, unexpected plot twists, perfect cast, and many other things. But another important part of the show is its theme song and the overall intro to the series.
Sometimes those are either extremely forgettable or really annoying so that you just skip them to get to the point. But there are a few examples of intros crafted so carefully, they really become united with the series and make it impossible for the fans to press the skip button.
Here are 5 series fans can't help but enjoy the perfect intros before diving into the next episode of the beloved series.
1. Succession (2018-2023)

Woody Harrelson doesn’t want to be a slave to technology by carrying around what he terms as “the appendage on my appendage.” In case you’re wondering what monstrous thing was described as “the appendage,” it’s a cellphone. Woody Harrelson was talking about a cellphone.
So why is he averse to carrying around a cellphone like every other normal person, celebrity and other?

This post contains spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country."
For filmmaker Issa López, a story's setting is pivotal to unraveling mysteries that are impossible to forget. When the torch for the long-standing "True Detective" franchise was passed down to her, López had to decide upon a location that evoked a brand of eeriness similar to the desaturated Louisiana bayou in season one of the show. As "True Detective: Night Country" was meant to be a noir-adjacent mystery, López settled on the fictional mining town of Ennis, situated in the snowy, windswept plains of Alaska. With darkness submerging the town for months on end, the central mystery in "Night Country" takes on a significantly unsavory tint, involving missing researchers and an unsolved murder within a tense spiral of conspiracy.

Jodie Foster is opening up about her filmmaking process and why she never fully “fell in love” with the acting side of the industry.
During a recent conversation with Jodie Comer for Interview magazine, the Oscar winner admitted she’s “not naturally an actor.”
“I just got stuck in it when I was three,” she explained. “I probably would’ve been a lawyer or a college professor. It’s just not my way. So I loved the technical sides of filmmaking, but I never fell in love with the acting part. It was against my nature, and I think has made me a richer person because of it.”
Throughout what has become a decades-long acting career, the True Detective star said she’s also learned a lot about herself, noting that she used to isolate herself from her co-stars on set.

What are the odds that you will run across someone else wearing exactly the same outfit as you at an event? Some may consider it a fashion faux pas and probably one of the biggest worries of any celebrity, but I prefer to see it as a testament to their exquisite, shared sense of style.
Recently, Brie Larson and Alexandra Daddario were photographed at the 7th Edition of the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival photocall. Shocking everyone, they showed up wearing the same black-and-white “Maryanna” polka dot dress by Santa Barbara-based label Dôen—and no, they didn’t plan it.
Although many would likely assume that the two would feel embarrassed or awkward for dressing alike, I don’t think it bothers them; they are both stylish and have similar feminine tastes anyway. Besides, the dress is the perfect way to kick off summer in Italy.

Woody Harrelson likely won’t be responding to any texts or calls in a timely fashion.
The Oscar-nominated actor revealed on a recent episode of the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast that he hasn’t regularly carried a cellphone with him in years because he found himself addicted to the device at one point.
“Let me explain something about Woody: He doesn’t have a phone,” his podcast co-host and Cheers co-star Ted Danson said. “He’s one of those bullies in life that make other people carry his phone for him. ‘Hey, we need to know something immediately, call Woody.’ And I just kind of laugh at whoever says that to me.”
“Well, that’s not exactly true,” Harrelson responded. “I just don’t like to have to be readily available to any human being at any time. And plus, that’s not the reason. I like to be in touch with people,...

Hugh Laurie has never won an Emmy. That seems like an egregious oversight on behalf of TV academy voters, considering the British actor starred as one of the best TV characters of this century in “House.” Still, 10 nominations (we’ll get to those later) and zero wins.
He could finally break that losing streak with Netflix’s “All the Light We Cannot See.” Adapted from Anthony Doerr‘s 2014 novel of the same name, written by Steven Knight, and directed by Shawn Levy, this miniseries depicts the lives of two teenagers during WWII — one a blind French girl and the other a German boy forced to fight for the Nazi regime. Laurie features as Uncle Étienne, a reclusive, agoraphobic WWI veteran suffering from Ptsd. Laurie has always been a classy performer and he again brings a lot of heart, warmth, and intelligence here to this role, as noted by several critics.

Gillian Anderson was once the face of TV thanks to her role as Dana Scully in “The X-Files.” That show awarded her some healthy, consistent Emmy attention (more on that later) before she underwent a bit of a break from that awards applause for a while. However, Netflix’s “The Crown” gave her career something of a second wind and that Andernaissance (sorry) has continued here with “Scoop.”
Like “The Crown,” Anderson excels here portraying a real-life person in a true story concerning the royal family. While she played Margaret Thatcher in “The Crown,” she takes on the role of presenter and journalist Emily Maitlis in Netflix’s “Scoop.” This TV movie documents the behind-the-scenes story of how producer Samantha McAlister (Billie Piper) secured the “scoop of the decade” and landed that interview with Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell).

There is a reason why Jodie Foster has never been on Broadway.
The actress told Interview magazine during a discussion with “The Bikeriders” star Jodie Comer that she has steered clear of theater acting after enduring a “traumatic” experience when she was 18.
Foster, who catapulted to fame after her turn as a child prostitute in “Taxi Driver,” was at the center of a presidential assassination attempt after would-be-murderer John Hinckley publicly dedicated his act of violence to her. The assassination attempt took place during Foster’s one and only theater acting experience. Later, an audience member brought a gun into the theater during her play, and Foster has opted to never return to the stage.
