Today, Apple TV+ revealed the premiere date and a first look at Women in Blue (“Las Azules”), its upcoming ten-episode Spanish-language crime drama featuring an entirely Hispanic cast and crew led by Ariel Award nominee Bárbara Mori.
Created by International Emmy Award-winning showrunner and director Fernando Rovzar and Pablo Aramendi, Women in Blue will make its global debut with the first two episodes on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, on Apple TV+, followed by one episode weekly through September 25.
Set in 1970 and inspired by true events, Women in Blue tells the story of four women who defy the ultra-conservative norms of the time and join Mexico’s first female police force, only to discover that their squad is a publicity stunt to distract the media from a brutal serial killer.

Warner Bros.’ “Wonka” is off to a decent start at the box office with $14.4 million grossed from 4,208 theaters on Friday, including $3.5 million from Thursday previews.
That puts Paul King’s family friendly musical prequel to “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” at an estimated $38 million opening weekend, firmly within the $35-40 million range projected by trackers.
With a reported $125 million budget before marketing, “Wonka” has a long way to go before it turns a theatrical profit, but has a chance of doing so if it legs out through the holiday season. Reception has been strong across the board with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 84% critics and 90% audience, an A- on CinemaScore, and PostTrak scores of 5/5 from parents and 4.5/5 from kids and general audiences.
Unfortunately for theaters, “Wonka” is making up roughly half of all business at the box office this weekend, as Christmas 2023 will be a much less lucrative period for...

Mexican actor/director/writer/ producer Eugenio Derbez “can do anything.”
That’s what Ben Odell, the co-founder and chief executive officer of Derbez’s production company, 3Pas, believes.
“The roles he’s been offered to date are the comedy relief guy,” Odell tells Variety. “The best of Hollywood is the big spectacle movies. Anyone who comes here wants to play in that big sandbox. Let’s see [Derbez] as the ‘bad guy’ in a Marvel movie. It’ll be fun, but he’ll bring that humanity and be scary as shit.”
First, audiences will get to see Derbez — who celebrates the 10th anniversary of groundbreaking comedy “Instructions Not Included” this year — tackle drama in “Radical,” which debuted at Sundance and won the Audience Award. “Radical” follows the true story of Mexican schoolteacher Sergio Juárez Correa, who uses immersive teaching techniques in a border town with failing test scores to inspire his students.

Mexico’s Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival, one of the country’s very top pre-pandemic movie events, has cancelled its 2023 12th edition, citing “the lack of the economic support which was vital in prior editions to carry out this important film event.”
In a written statement, the festival organisers thanked “those people, companies and institutions who had confirmed their support and participation in the 2023. We are committed to strengthen our collaboration in the future.”
Based out of Cabo San Lucas, and launched in 2012 as an three-way North American industry bridge between U.S., Canada and Mexico, Los Cabos proved one of the fastest-growing festivals in Latin America, playing off the huge hike in Mexican production levels, Mexico’s first big U.S./Mexico box office hits such as “Instructions Not Included,” which grossed $90.6 million between the two markets; and the enthusiastic support of Canada’s Telefilm and influential industry players...

Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro has nominated 27 Latino-driven films for inclusion in the National Film Registry. Among the suggestions are films that brought Oscar nominations to Latino actors and artists, including Salma Hayek, as Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in “Frida” (2002); Catalina Sandino Moreno, who portrayed a desperate undocumented pregnant immigrant in “Maria Full of Grace” (2004) and Demián Bichir, who played an undocumented worker in Los Angeles in “A Better Life” (2011). All were nominated for lead acting Oscars.
Other notable titles nominated by the congressman are Peter Sollett’s coming-of-age indie “Raising Victor Vargas,” Alfonso Arau’s romantic drama “Like Water for Chocolate (1992) and Darnell Martin’s “I Like It Like That” (1994), a story of a Puerto Rican family in the Bronx.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

Latin American superstar Eugenio Derbez has had an accident and will undergo a “complicated” surgery, his wife, Alessandra Rosaldo, told his fans in an Instagram post.
“He is fine, however the injuries he suffered are delicate and in the next few hours, he will have to undergo surgery. The operation is very complicated, but it does not compromise his health,” Rosaldo wrote on Monday night, adding, “The recovery process will be long and difficult since he will have to rest for several weeks and then undergo rehabilitation therapies.”
The star of Mexican sitcoms in the early 2000s, Derbez had a breakout box office hit with the 2013 movie Instructions Not Included. And he was onstage along with the rest of the cast for Coda when that film earned an Academy Award in 2022.
Rosaldo did not offer details on the accident that landed Derbez in the hospital.

Arguably, Mexican film and television superstar Eugenio Derbez has already conquered the American market. His 2013 film “Instructions Not Included” is the highest grossing Spanish-language film in the U.S. and grossed 100 million worldwide. He earned a SAG Award as part of the “Coda” ensemble cast, which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar, and he co-starred in the hit action-adventure “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.”
However, the attempts to launch him as a romantic leading man — in 2017’s “How to Be a Latin Lover” and 2018’s “Overboard,” a remake of the 1987 comedy — haven’t exactly lit the world on fire, even if they have been profitable.
But if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again, and Derbez is back, with “Overboard” writers Bob Fisher and Rob Greenberg, starring in and producing Hulu’s “The Valet,” directed by Richard Wong. It’s a remake of the...

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. Netflix is about to introduce one of Mexico’s most legendary fictional families to the English-speaking world with “We Are the Nobles,” a new U.S. film adaptation of Mexican sensation “Nosotros los Nobles” (The Noble Family).
Eight years ago, Gaz Alazraki’s family comedy became a certified blockbuster, and still ranks as the second highest-grossing Mexican film of all time, behind “Instructions Not Included.” When Netflix was getting into original production outside of the U.S., its first effort was the series “Club of Crows,” created by Alazraki and inspired by his cinema super-hit.

After collaborating on a number of hit songs over the years, Snoop Dogg and Jamie Foxx are now teaming up for vampire-hunter film “Day Shift.”

Foxx stars in the new Netflix movie as a hard working, blue collar dad who wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 8-year-old daughter, but his mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income — hunting and killing vampires as part of an international union of vampire hunters.

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. Park City, Utah is home to some stunning $25 million mountain estates — but it’s a jaw-dropping price for an indie movie to come out of the ski town’s preeminent American film festival, Sundance.
But there was “Coda,” a touching drama that kicked off 2021’s virtual edition of the event, landing a record-smashing $25 million deal from Apple Studios, or the cost of one of those palatial getaways. The victory followed a bidding war that, according to nearly a dozen sources who spoke to Variety, revealed much about Hollywood’s priorities, cashflow and boundaries in this moment of streaming disruption and pandemic chaos. It also encapsulated the way that the old indie film business, one that relies on box office performance and television licensing, is being subsumed by the rise of streaming services that aren’t as dependent on those totems of success.

Particular Crowd, the fledgling U.S.-based film division from WarnerMedia’s Turner Latin America, has nabbed all Latin American rights to Argentine filmmaker Marcos Carnevale’s latest film, the dramedy “El Cuartito.”
Shot and produced entirely in Puerto Rico, “El Cuartito” refers to the security screening room that five Latinos are confined in when they run afoul of U.S. immigration authorities at Puerto Rico’s San Juan airport. Donald J. Trump was still president when film was made so his portrait hangs on the wall of the tiny room and is a key prop in the dramedy. Carnevale even incorporated the tremors of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake and the multiple aftershocks which struck Puerto Rico while they were filming.
Spain’s Mario de la Rosa, whose credits include Netflix hit “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”), BBC’s “The Night Manager” and the latest James Cameron production “Terminator: Dark Fate,...

Spyglass Media Group is developing a Latinx remake of the 1986 sci-fi comedy “Short Circuit.”
The original “Short Circuit,” starring Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens, sees the military develop prototype robots called S.A.I.N.T. (Strategic Artificially Intelligent Nuclear Transport) and one of the units is struck by lightning, which makes it sentient. The robot escapes and is found by Sheedy’s Stephanie Speck, an animal care-giver, who mistakes him for an alien.
The company has hired the writing team of Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman to bring Latinx elements into the project. Cisneros co-wrote the 2013 Mexican comedy “Instructions Not Included,” which was directed by and starred Eugenio Derbez. Cisneros and Shuman wrote the screenplay for the upcoming comedy “Half Brothers,” in which a Mexican aviation exec is shocked to learn he has an American half-brother he never knew about.

Omar Chaparro, one of Mexico’s most popular comedian-actors, and Mexican-Lebanese actress Edy Ganem (“Devious Maids”) have been cast as leads in feature drama “7th & Union” from newly launched Broken English Productions.

While Netflix continues to add a lot of great content, including some new original series for the summer, the platform is also going to be losing parts of its library. In particular, July will see The Matrix trilogy depart the service for the newly launched HBO Max, with some other Warner Bros. movies also making their way over to the fledgling subscription rival. What titles, then, are no longer going to be available on Netflix come July?
Well, among the films that are leaving next month, notable pics include Cloverfield, The Curse of Benjamin Button and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as the majority of the Tremors franchise. Another big Warner Bros. title, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, will also be removed, part of what’s becoming a mass transfer of content over to HBO Max as the rival looks to compete with Netflix on its back-catalogue of movies. Impractical Jokers: The Movie isn’t pranking us when it comes to their box office performance. After having a stellar opening last week, the big-screen adaptation of WarnerMedia’s truTV prank show expanded from 357 to nearly 1,800 theaters and earned an estimated $3,545,000, to bring its cume to $6.6 million. The movie has now cracked the top 10 at the box office, right behind Birds of Prey and ahead of 1917.
The pic debuted to an impressive $2.6 million and had the highest per-screen average among major releases at $7,302. The audience response gave it enough of a boost to expand in its second week out, adding 1,493 theaters in 210 markets. On Friday, it slipped 6%, but then jumped a massive 51% on Saturday from last week.

The Parasite train keeps on gaining steam, with Bong Joon Ho’s four-time Oscar-winning dark comedy crossing $50 million at the domestic box office. But the real question is, can it beat Life Is Beautiful’s box office gross of $57M? If it maintains its momentum, signs are pointing to yes.
As its Imax run comes to an end and it dropped from 1,806 theaters to 1,324, Parasite still is showcasing its post-Oscars staying power. It already has surpassed Mexico’s Instructions Not Included ($44.4M) to become the fourth-highest-grossing foreign language/international film at the domestic box office but remains far behind Ang Lee’s four-time Oscar-winning 2000 martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ($128.1M).
Parasite is hot on the heels of Miramax’s Hero ($53.7M) from 2002, as well as the aforementioned Oscar winner Life is Beautiful from 1997.

Imax is releasing a digitally re-mastered version of Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” for a one-week run at select Imax locations starting Friday.
“Parasite” is the first non-English-language movie ever to win the Oscar for best picture. The South Korean film took in $5.7 million at 2,002 domestic locations during the post-Oscar weekend, lifting its cumulative take to $43.4 million since early October. The darkly comic thriller won Oscars for picture, director, international film and original screenplay.
“Parasite” trails four films on the list of top foreign-language grossers in North America –“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” ($128.1 million), “Life Is Beautiful” ($57.2 million), “Hero” ($53.7 million) and “Instructions Not Included” ($44.5 million).
Even though “Parasite” has been available on DVD since Jan. 28, prospects are solid for significantly more box office. Best picture victors typically see a notable bump in business, as was the case for last year’s winner “Green Book,” which grossed 18% ($15 million) of its total North American take after the Oscars.

Neon is doubling the North American run of best picture Oscar winner “Parasite” to as many as 2,000 locations.

Updated, Monday Pm: Neon is still counting exactly how wide Parasite will go following its historic Oscar Best Picture win Sunday, but the forecast is around 2,300 theaters. Industry estimates factor, despite the pic being available on DVD now, that it will go to $45 million, becoming the fourth highest-grossing foreign film at the domestic box office behind Sony Pictures Classics’ four-time Oscar winner Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Miramax’s three-time Oscar winner Life Is Beautiful ($57.2M), and Miramax’s Hero ($53.7M).
As far as Parasite getting to $50M, box office sources believe that would be hard. Getting to $45M, a 27% jump in the pic’s total cume following yesterday’s Oscars, is sweet enough.
What’s remarkable about Parasite in both its theatrical release and Oscar campaign is that Neon did this on a thrifty budget next to the exorbitant $100M-plus Oscar campaign Netflix executed for its movies (that amount largely...

From Event Horizon to Cloverfield, The Amityville Horror to the Tremors franchise, Netflix’s horror category has officially been restocked. There’s plenty to choose from, too, including the 2002 rendition of The Ring, which only makes us long for a competent retelling of the Japanese horror legend to right the wrongs of Rings (2017). At least we have the upcoming Grudge reboot to look forward to on Friday (or January 24th if you happen to be located in the United Kingdom).

Madrid — Women fighting back. Three of the six titles in Ventana Sur’s Copia Final this year picture women confronting outrage or tragedy – gender violence (“Do You Like Me?”), the abduction of a new born baby (“Song Without a Name”) or the death of a husband (“Venezia”) – and reacting, in multifarious fashions.
“Do You Like Me?” has a thriller edge. Three more, underscoring Latin American cinema’s current broad range, show Latin American filmmakers enrolling mainstream beats to appeal beyond traditional arthouse audiences in more accessible titles, whether in an unusual immigration drama (“Marionette”), or via empathy with a challenged protagonist (“The Friendly Man”) or a straight-up coming of age tale (“This Is Not Berlin”).

David Spitz has signed a new long-term deal with Lionsgate as President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution.
Not only has Spitz been behind the theatrical launches of the studio’s signature franchises such as The Hunger Games, Saw, the Tyler Perry canon and John Wick, but has mined a number of hits for Lionsgate by thinking out of the box on release dates and finding holes on the calendar that other studios will overlook. Read, he boldly opened the feature adaptation of the beloved childrens novel Wonder against the anticipated four-quad Justice League last year and captured a pre-holiday family crowd. HollywoodChicago.com: “Overboard” is a remake of the 80’s film, but with a twist. What drew you to this specific project?
Eugenio Derbez: Let me start at the beginning. After “Instructions Not Included” did amazing at the box office, I had a meeting with MGM one day. They said, are you interested in doing a remake. They showed me a list and I saw “Overboard”. I was like, “Oh! I watched this growing up!

Mexico’s most bankable star, Eugenio Derbez, will be looking to make a splash with this Friday’s release of “Overboard,” a remake of the 1987 romantic comedy of the same name starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
Derbez has already proven there’s an underserved and largely untapped U.S. audience for Spanish-language films. His 2013 passion project, “Instructions Not Included,” grossed nearly $100 million on a $5 million budget, becoming the best-selling Spanish-language film of all time. His follow-up comedy, “How to be a Latin Lover,” earned $62 million and was one of the top 10 films in Mexico last year.
But “Overboard” — where Derbez stars as a hyper-wealthy Mexican playboy opposite Anna Faris — marks his first attempt to expand his fan base to include non-Latino audiences. The film reverses the roles played by Hawn and Russell, with Derbez playing Hawn’s part as a rich heir of a multi-national company stricken with amnesia.
