- With his mental health at an all-time low, a veteran Free Solo's for what may be the last time.
- In a gloomy counseling office, sits a hooded man, John. While listening to music through his earbud, he remains unresponsive to the therapist's questions: "Have you ever tried to hurt yourself?" "Have you ever contemplated suicide?" "John...do you want to die?"
A flashback is shown of John, dangerously running up the Stawamus Chief rock face.
Back in the office, the therapist continues to question John about his mental health and free soloing. Cuts show him climbing faster and higher. "Why don't you tell me about the breakup?", she asks.
A plate smashes above John's head as Sarah screams. A verbally violent fight breaks out between this clearly ending relationship. It seems someone close to Sarah has died in combat and John wasn't there to support her. The argument blows up until Sarah cries: "I wish you'd died instead of him...I wish I'd never met you".
John is seen on the rock face again, tormented by the inner voices from hi scarring fight and his PTSD from military service. The volume of the music playing in his ear increases as the voices in his head also build. He climbs more frantically as the technical difficulty of the rock increases.
Back in the counseling office, John takes his earbuds out and removes his hood for the first time. He explains how pushing his limits soloing is the only way for him to make the voices in his head stop.
Cut to John back on the rock face, a scene shows John in military uniform with Sarah's brother who's unfortunately passed away when deployed with John. The couple is then shown during the final stage of their breakup. Their violence has ceased; they share their love for the last time. Match cut to John on his knees, resting his head on the granite surface at the summit. He's finally letting go and for the first time, he cries.
We pan back from the magnificent Stawamus Chief to show the jaw-dropping rock face John's just soloed. He stands, still teary eyed, and finally reaches out for help as he makes one final phone call: "Hey Mom...I need help."
