Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

The BAFTA TV Awards took place this sunny Sunday afternoon as the British equivalent of the Emmys awarded the best of the year’s TV on the other side of the Atlantic. The ceremony was hosted by Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett, who both hosted last year, while the event takes place at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank. Scroll down for the full list of winners.
Netflix’s “The Crown” leads the way with eight nominations. Another Netflix show, “Demon 79 (Black Mirror),” came in second with seven nominations while BBC’s “Happy Valley,” Apple TV’s “Slow Horses,” and BBC’s “The Sixth Commandment” all snagged six bids apiece.
Several US shows did well, too, with HBO’s “The Last of Us” and “Succession” each receiving five nominations — the same as ITV’s drama “The Long Shadow.” The BBC documentary “Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland...

It was a night of surprises at the BAFTA TV Awards, with “The Crown” and “Black Mirror” failing to pick up any awards while “Succession” walked away with only one for Matthew Macfadyen for best supporting actor.
Macfadyen did not attend the awards at London’s Royal Festival Hall, prompting Helena Bonham Carter, who presented the category, to walk off with the iconic gold BAFTA mask with the promise she would get it to Macfadyen.
The international category also saw upset, with frontrunners “Succession,” “Beef” and “The Bear” all failing to win the award. They were instead beaten by little-known French series “Class Act.” It was a fact acknowledged by the show’s shocked lead actor Laurent Lafitte, who, upon accepting the award, told the audience: “Please watch our show. It’s called ‘Class Act,’ it’s quite good — not just because I’m starring in it.”

British comedian Joe Lycett has revealed that, in the last month, he has planted four fake stories in the British media.
The Guardian newspaper reports that, on his Friday evening TV show, Late Night Lycett, the presenter – who has previously created fake walk-outs on chat shows, and doorstepped public figures – revealed four stories that he told the audience he invented, but were picked up and covered by UK newspapers and TV.
The four stories he said he fabricated were:
A footballer suffering with a bruise in the shape of Prince Harry; A statue of ‘H’ from UK pop group Steps being erected in his Welsh hometown (this story was also confirmed as fake by H aka musician Ian Watkins); Research showing that men from Birmingham (Lycett’s hometown) are the largest endowed in the UK; A mural of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz film being drawn by undercover graffiti artist Banksy.

“The Crown” could well bow out in style on home soil, with the final outing of the show leading the list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA TV and TV Craft awards, announced Wednesday.
Netflix’s hit royal drama — which came to an end last year after six seasons — landed eight nominations in total, including for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville and Salim Daw in the performance categories. However, it missed out for drama series (an award it has been nominated for three times previously).
Just behind “The Crown” and also a Netflix production, the apocalyptic “Black Mirror” episode “Demon 79” earned seven nominations, including limited drama and leading actress for Anjana Vasan.
Further down in a tight group of frontrunners, BBC dramas “Happy Valley” and “The Sixth Commandment and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” each have six nominations. Sarah Lancashire’s leading actress nomination for “Happy Valley” could see...

Yep, Mel B still appears to consider James Corden the “biggest d–khead celebrity” that she has ever met.
The 48-year-old Spice Girls singer and former America’s Got Talent judge doubled down on her previous comments while being interviewed on the British talk show Late Night Lycett this week.
Keep reading to find out more…
When making her original comments about James last year, Mel said, “I think you always have to be nice to the people that you work with whether it be production, camera guys, sound, lighting. We all work for the same thing, so you should always be nice and he hasn’t been very nice.”
During her Late Night Lycett appearance, Mel was given a Spice Girls quiz.
One question was, “Which Spice Girl described James Corden as the ‘biggest d***head celebrity?’” In response, Mel quickly put her hand in the air and said, “Me!

U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has posted robust revenues of £1.14 billion ($1.47 billion) for 2022. The figure was only a 2% drop from last year’s record £1.2 billion ($1.5 billion).
“2022 was operationally and financially a very successful year,” the network’s CEO Alex Mahon told reporters at a press briefing on Wednesday morning local time as the results were announced.
One third of revenues came from streams other than traditional linear advertising, Mahon said, and the network also expanded non-advertising revenue to 11% of total revenue.
The network also posted strong results in video-on-demand, clocking up 1.4 billion streaming views in 2022, almost the same figure as in 2021, which was boosted by lockdowns. April 2022 was Channel 4’s best month for VOD with 5 billion minutes streamed.
Mahon also noted that now the threat of privatization had been lifted, Channel 4 was able to focus on its strategy. Earlier this year the U.K. government confirmed it had canceled plans to privatize the broadcaster.

Channel 4’s Ian Katz has become the first broadcasting boss to acknowledge the UK commissioning slowdown, which led Bectu to yesterday declare an “emergency” in the freelance TV community.
Katz told the Wales Screen Summit Channel 4 is “watching to see how the market plays out,” while he is speaking to indies about the “freelancer situation.”
The cost-of-living crisis has been causing a well-publicized slowdown in the advertising market and Katz noted this could decline by 10% to 20% over the coming months, with ITV last week issuing a trading update showing a 10% dip in Q1.
Channel 4 is helped by the fact that “we came out of Covid and commissioned quite fast, quite intentionally because the cupboards were very empty,” according to Katz, who said “we are well stocked [with shows] into this year and the first half of next year.”

Rylan Clark has said that he can count his celebrity friends “on one hand”.
Appearing on Joe Lycett’s live Channel 4 show Late Night Lycett on Friday (7 April), Clark was asked by comedian Lycett to name his famous friends.
Admitting that he could “count them on one hand”, Clark listed Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes, as well as Claire Richards from Steps.
“They’re my little nook,” he said.
Lycett responded by joking that his celebrity fans could be counted on 10 fingers, one for each of the 10 members of the band Blazin’ Squad. To demonstrate this, he held up a prop hand with five extra fingers stuck onto the palm.
Clark has been vocal in the past about his love of Langsford and Holmes, who he worked with on This Morning.

Joe Lycett took aim at Rupert Murdoch during his opening monologue on Late Night Lycett.
Reports broke earlier this week that the billionaire media mogul and Ann Lesley Smith had called off their engagement just two weeks after announcing their plans to marry.
Hosting his new Channel 4 live show on Friday (7 April), Lycett told the live studio audience: “Rupert Murdoch’s had a big week, he’s broken off his engagement.
“People say she was only after his money but I think that’s unfair, she may have just really been turned on by a flaccid, yellow, 92-year-old c***.”
After the audience reacted with shocked laughs at the explicit joke, Lycett responded: “What? What’s he gonna do to me?”
After a pause, he predicted: “F***ing everything”.
Murdoch, who has been married four times previously, announced his engagement to the former dental hygienist, 66, last month.
“I was very nervous.

In his memoir Ten: The Decade That Changed My Future, published last year, the presenter said that a...

Joe Lycett took aim at Rupert Murdoch during his opening monologue on Late Night Lycett on Friday (7 April).
Reports broke earlier this week that the billionaire media mogul and Ann Lesley Smith had called off their engagement just two weeks after announcing their plans to marry.
“Rupert Murdoch’s had a big week, he’s broken off his engagement,” Lycett told his live studio audience.
“People say she was only after his money but I think that’s unfair, she may have just really been turned on by a flaccid, yellow, 92-year-old c**k.”
I dreaded falling in love...
