Heavily flawed
m-ramanan8 June 2024
RATED 6/10 Language: Tamil Source: Amazon prime

The movie has all potential including cast, director, music and nice touch on story, but still failed as a movie. Its very unfortunate to fell short of to orchestrate this great assembling... Totally missed opportunity.

1: They failed to convey the struggling of hero to become star... just roaming around Bombay streets without money not at all add any value 2. Two heroines and both of their love and separation was handled very badly... moving from one pair to another pair is just like tuning one page to another page.... 3. Lot of places you can still feel the serial drama making and cliche dialogs and run off the mill scenes...

The only good point I can see that the connection between first and last scene... it was ultimate. Its really touched and I rated 6 just because of this scene...

A Neat Watchable One
arunmohan-4977410 May 2024
A good performance by Kavin and cast crew. Director Elan work looks promising 👍. Cinematography and editing also looking great.

YSR's music is the backbone to the movie. Screenplay little bit slow but it went in a good note.

Once again editing very nice and the dialogues are very strong. Lal character has writtened well. The emotional scenes connecting and worked out well.

Particularly this movie highlighted scenes are starting, interval and the climax. Lot of scenes and frames are giving goosebumps in theatre.

A Neat and good emotional drama film. The movie looks overall motivational and watchable. This one is going to be a sureshot hit.

comes across as an egocentric individual
beevenkat12 May 2024
The hero has everything going for him - a supportive family and two women who passionately love him. His desire to become an actor is dashed by a facial scar, which causes him to retreat into a shell. Does he beat the odds and come out on top? Lal and Kavin deliver outstanding performances as father and son in Tamil #StarMovie. Every young man would want his dad to be like Lal after seeing this film. However, Kavin comes across as an egocentric individual who consciously acts against his own best interests and makes bad judgments that will ultimately hurt him. Running time needs to be reduced by 15 minutes. Rating 3/5.

Universe always falls in love with stubborn heart...!!!
PANDIAN1206218 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"Star" isn't just a movie; it's an exploration of ambition, identity, and the blurred lines between reality and performance...

Remember the first scene of the movie where young kalai gets ready for fancy dress competition and the Barathiyar Meesai got lost ..the father said... through your acting you must make the audience forget about the mustache... that when you accomplish as a performer ... And the same dialogue came is frozen scene shot at the hospital scene ending when director says cut... the entire hospital scene kalai(kavin) doesn't have scar on his face... the entire hospital scene is a movie shoot. The director made us forget his scar and focus on his acting...Indeed a director's touch & a typical movie buff drop test to watchout...Kudos to director Elan...

Kavin was more interested in playing a complex and vulnerable character. The character's journey is structured in a way that, somewhere the whole story feels like a beta Vaaranam Aayiram. The vulnerable parts of the character were played very convincingly by him... He doesn't like job but awarded employee of the year is an no sense idea from the creator...

Preity Mukhudhan, as the love interest of Kalai, was really fluent in her performance... When it comes to Aaditi Pohankar, the quirky motivational character of Surabhi is a little too loud. The kind of comfort the movie wants the hero to feel when he is with Surabhi is not entirely there... Lal, as the supportive father, is fine in terms of the way performs the emotions. But the dialect was a bit problematic. Geetha Kailasam was also equally fine as the typical eccentric mother of the hero...

Also first half is somewhat slow-paced seems to be lagging while the post accident scenes is where the movie shifts the gear... The messaging is not preachy and yet make a statement as the film glides through with minor hitches that can be ignored...

Cinematography by Ezhil Arasu is neat. Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score is effective while his fans will be disappointed with his template songs...

Overall Star a passable drama with forgivable flaws & partly engaging flick that holds you firmly on the later half...

Feel Good movie

Kavin's performance in "Star" shines brightly, capturing the essence of an artist's struggle with a compelling narrative that resonates deeply. Directed by Elan, the film is a poignant portrayal of ambition and resilience, set against the backdrop of the Tamil film industry. Yuvan Shankar Raja's music elevates the emotional core of the story, while Lal's portrayal of a supportive father adds depth to the narrative. The film's surprises and twists keep the audience engaged, culminating in a satisfying climax that leaves a lasting impression. "Star" is a testament to the power of dreams and the unyielding human spirit. Overall, it's a must-watch that scores a solid 5/5.

Kavin's Performance . Good for OTT
natureboy-8490712 May 2024
Star... it's all about the star named Kavin , what a brilliant actor he is , good found for Tamil movie . If not for him this movie would have been more boring . The movie is all about a long struggle a person undergoes to get into movie industry and most of it sounds true . The movie had one more star which made the crowd go excited was none but Yuvan, he sticks to his unique styling of doing music. While most of it sounds heard before types still it was high on energy and gelled well with the storyline . His music definitely sounds different from Arr, Ani and many... direct Dil Ke...The storyline is simple and has shades of many other movies, and to mention again it's Yuvan's music that gave more life to the scenes . The Ghazal song was a bumper . Class. Talking about the cast , they were definitely beautiful , beyond Kavin , Lal made a classic lifetime performance alongside Geetha Kailasam who comes in as Kavin's mom . Most of the times she put up a very realistic performance but at times overdid it too. Preity Mukhundan was seriously charming and putting up all possible cuteness to her character and performance . Impressive . The movie was definitely missing her in the second half and that's when Aditi Sudhir came up with her rocksolid performance ensuring to make people forget the past (Preity 🙂). The movie had lots of references to other super hit movies including the famous song from Pudhupettai which suited more to this Star than the original . Many such things ensured fun and Star movie was all about performances and super entertaining first half , and it happened . The interval block , then the movie went bizarre and it was seriously dragging and at times depressing which was unexpected . Sure , that's where the viewers would have lost interest and started a desperate wait for it to end . Director Elan still tried hard to get the movie on the track with few promising scenes , still couldn't save the drag . Editing and Trimming of the movie length was much desired there . If it had happened , sure Star would have been a Super-Star. Missed. Good for OTT. Overall Star, Dimming.

Riddled with mistakes
isaacsundaralingam20 May 2024
It's a shame when what could have been a promising movie ends up being a giant waste of time. Elan gives us the story of an aspiring actor and the hardships he faces trying to make a name for himself in the Tamil cinema industry in "Star" with actor Kavin in the lead role after the sleeper success of his previous outing in "Dada". And therein lies the first problem.

Actor Kavin - the anchor on which this movie is fastened, turns out to be grossly miscast, with him just not having the range required to play the role effectively. I've seen a few reviews praising Kavin for his performance here, but I just don't see it. Most of the movie was me just wondering how bad a job Kavin is doing here, and feeling that as bad as the movie might be, if it could have been salvaged by a better actor. Every time Kavin tried to be what the script might demand of a great actor, it just comes across as incredibly try-hard and cringe-worthy. Think the monologue he recites to his father which was clearly intended to be a moment of awe, which instead just ended up being an incompetent caricature of a good actor.

The movie's second biggest issue is the very plot itself. It lacks any bit of focus or direction, and just ends up being all over the place. What makes things worse is the painful melodrama infused throughout the movie without any self-awareness. It's a nothing movie where things happen for the sake of happening, and happens so in the most ridiculous way possible. Think the entire second half, with the introduction of Aditi Pohankar's character Surabi - who not only was written to be the most annoying person in the world, but was also written as if the writers themselves had no idea what to do in the second half of the movie.

And yes, characters. It's difficult to like a movie without a single likeable or relatable character. Kavin's character especially, spends the entire movie being an arrogant entitled loser with no redeemable qualities, but is somehow the one we're supposed to be cheering for? Worse so is the fact that the movie tries to justify his insufferable nature by virtue of him being the main character. It was such an incompetent movie all around.

I think the one thing the movie has going for it is the fact that it keeps us expecting something to happen throughout. And this is good enough to distract us from what a horrible movie we've been watching the whole time. It's not until you get home and start thinking back on what you actually watched, do you start to realize just how bad it is. So yea, save yourself the trouble and ignore this movie. You'll be better off.

Iconic🌟Experience 💯
udhayaraj-6643218 May 2024
For me this film is the best film anyone can think of to achieve in the film industry.

Not only in the film industry but also in any other field, if you keep putting effort into it in life and keep doing it with satisfaction, one day in your life you will.

What I really want to mention in this movie is actor Kavin's performance which was very, very good. So far I have seen other Tamil films in which his performance is very Good.

Even though the story of this film is a familiar story to us, the way it was moved was very beautiful.

Finally, if it has to be told, this will make you cry many times.

Universe falls in love with the stubborn heart.
chand-suhas9 June 2024
Kalai (Kavin) since his childhood is encouraged by his father to be an actor. Kalai's family consists of his photographer father, mother, elder sister and bedridden grandmother. His mother worries for his future whereas rest of the family supports his dream. He joins engineering but his sole ambition is to become an actor and thus a star. His first teacher is his father and all he has learnt about acting as well as life is through him. When Kalai dedicates his time to earn his opportunity, what challenges life throws at him and how does these challenges shapes him up while his core dream remains intact, forms rest of the story.

To put it upfront, I was blown away by Elan's vision. His writing is the soul of this film and the way he conceptualize the scenes and even stages them is what left me mesmerized. The very first scene with Kavin as a kid with his father doing the makeup while the mother rushes them, a sleepy sister and a missing moustache. The scene felt like designed specifically for the father to utter the dialogue about an actor's calibre but the throwback it receives in the terrific single shot climax sequence made me sit up instantly. Cinema won right there and I have spent the last 5mins recommending this film everyone in my contact.

The film is not without it's flaws though. The second half is completely melodramatic as well as preachy and the character of Surabi played by Aditi Pohankar was deliberately written to save Kalai. She was definitely very good in her role but it reminded me of Samantha's role in Majili and to have one character worship the hero to this extent didn't work well for me. Not just her, even with the family and friends, Elan pulled the strings too tight. Sure I my eyes went numb several times but compared to the excellent first half, the second half kept falling short until the magical climax. There is an extraordinary scene with the two heroines exchanging a simple thank you and I so wished these two characters had a better arc, because they simply deserved it.

Kavin & Yuvan deliver. Elan's writing, not so much. [+53%]
arungeorge138 June 2024
Expected to see a fun, coming-of-age drama related to the struggles of an aspiring actor, ended up seeing more of a sentimental journey with its share of ups and downs (~unfortunately more downs than ups). Both the love stories in the film, while neatly performed, had problems in the writing. The "acting" struggles barely scratch the surface, and the screenplay rushes through these parts to focus on the protagonist's personal, physical, and mental hardships. While the writing feels somewhat derivative, the production design and locations carry a lived-in feel.

Lal puts in a worthwhile performance as the protagonist's father, even when his dialect seems to be a persistent bother. Kavin gets to showcase more of his acting chops here and proves he's ready to be moulded in the hands of Tamil cinema's capable filmmakers. The leading ladies (Preity Mukhundan and Aditi Pohankar) have good screen presence, and I'd love to see them featured more (in better scripts, i.e.). Aside from Kavin, the real star of the film is Yuvan. The songs and the score blend seamlessly with the visuals.

civilshanthosh11 May 2024
Star is mixing with middle class life, college life, love, emotion to become a actor.. Very good acting by kavin.. Again he is giving best performance in "star"... Acting wise this is the best film for kavin.. Dada is second.. 'Elan' direction is best.. motivational to youngsters.. Second Best performance Lal sir 👏👏. Yuvan shangkar raja once again rock.... Oru naalil vazhakku song perfect placed.. Yuvan is missing Muthukumar sir here.. Family part scene slowing movie.. Lal and family scene is too long.. Climax scene amazing.. Full score to kavin and elan.. Must watch movie in 2024. Best family movie..

A wannabe inspirational movie about an all-time angry male lead making it big in the cinema industry with little efforts, and throwing tantrums!
Vetrrich_Chelvan16 June 2024
Star narrates the story of Kalai, an entitled, immature chauvinist with zero humility, and a horrible attitude, aspiring to become an actor. Characterization in this film is one of the worst ever, given that Kalai, played atrociously by Kavin, is heavily flawed, and unbearable to watch. He is adamant about achieving his dreams while hurting everyone around him, and he is not shown to be making any realistic efforts to acquire a role, rather he spends time with his girlfriends, and gets married, Elan, the director is confused about where he should take his story next.

Becoming an actor needs patience, humility, and networking skills. A person aspiring to be an actor must have a pleasant personality and adaptability. He/She should be willing to travel and must spend a lot of time on set, and learn acting. Kalai, the lead character of Star neither possesses any of these skills, nor does anything significant goal-related. He is this angry teen you would see in an anime or the child you would see in a supermarket yelling, crying, and assaulting others for not getting what he/she wanted. An example would be that Kalai does not even change his hairstyle throughout the film. Star is a poor depiction of millions of youngsters trying to make it into the cinema industry, and in his greed to attract audiences from all walks of life, Elan has done them a disgrace.

The casting department has done a funny job in this film. Casting Kavin as Kalai is a huge blunder. Kavin overacts throughout the film. Another terrible miscast is Lal, Kalai's father. You need subtitles to understand him. Aditi Sudhir Pohankar as Surabi is not only the most annoying character ever written but also the actor can't speak Tamil as reflected in her lip movements. Except for Yuvan Shankar Raja's one-liner - 'Even if I am against myself, my dreams will not end in vain', all other music in this film is non-existent.

Star is a parallel to Singapore Saloon, both written wannabe inspirational movies, that focus little on the lead character's growth and more on masala elements that the Tamil cinema industry is used to seeing. Maybe the directors should give the audience more credit, and make a film like 12th Fail, which will reflect the pain and suffering one must endure to achieve in life, and not a film in which the main character continuously suffers due to 'fate' and nothing else.

Frustrated, Vetrrich Chelvan PRIME160624.

A Neat film with Close to Reality moments
veena-0634215 May 2024
Kavin - Elan - Yuvan. The KEY combo has given it their all for this movie. The Climax was highly engaging and the movie was worth my money.

Kavin has proved his Acting prowess one more time, this time to make it as an even more strong impression that he has arrived as a STAR and is here to stay. Yuvan's BGM compliments the emotions in the Movie. Like both Kavin's performance and Yuvan's music were complementing each other. The strong screen presence from Kavin and Lal sir has kept the movie engaging. Well written and well cast characters by Elan is highly appreciable.

There Are many goosebumps moments in the movie which also makes us connect with the Character.

Kavin-Yuvan Show
meenazscribe13 May 2024
Kavin is the STELLAR STAR of the movie STAR...Yuvan Second Hero back to form on correct time...

Tremendous and natural performance of kavin let us forgot some of the flaws in this movie...Kavin shouldered the whole movie with his excellent performance where yuvan gave soul to the movie...Just that single shot final climax making worth your money, kavin acting, yuvan bgm, ezhil's dop, lighting, elan's execution paisa vasool....

What a bliss to watch our oru naalil song in a movie when lyrics suits the situation of kalai's struggles...

GO WITHOUT EXPECTATIONS AND GOT SURPRISED...WORTH WATCHABLE...WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE TALENTS LIKE KAVIN TO DO MORE SUBJECTS LIKE THIS TO GET MORE CONTENT MOVIES..

A modern day Varanam Ayiram
rajvignesh-6014023 June 2024
The movie star is all about emotions, love passion and Cinema. Star is a more realistic hitting movie to all people who want to be success in cinema. Its more dangerous because the reality is potrayed so raw and its difficult to accept. I can connect my self to each and every scene in the film, just can feel my life. Kavin omg! He could the next super star in kollywood. He just nailed with his performances, killer acting with terrific performances overall. He really is a star, his improvement is better day by day. Worth watching his movies, selecting content is appreciated. The writing is really good , kudos to the director, expecting more films as such. Yuvan as usual nailed with his bgm, songs are ok but bgm as usual a masterpiece, it gives some life to many scenes. Lal and the pair for kavin did an osm performance too, a very well crafted realistic drama movie. Please do watch it, available in Amazon prime.
