“You’re here for an experimental shorts program, so you know,” said filmmaker Shambhavi Kaul. “You know.” Her latest was premiering as part of the second Wavelengths shorts program of TIFF 2023, the section-within-a-section of the festival I value most—once a rejuvenating four sessions when I started attending TIFF in 2016, subsequently pared down to two in a smaller auditorium and back to three in this year’s edition. In his overview of this year’s Wavelengths, Michael Sicinski walks through its history and how, over the years, it’s enfolded other, more fleeting sections for adventurous work; now, there can only be one, […]

Patrick (Benjamin Schwinn) shoves two arms full of snacks in the open window of an old Renault that definitely won’t be passing inspection (if it even arrives to its appointment on-time) and kisses Diana (Sara Summa) goodbye as she, her brother (Robin Summa’s Arthur), and her son (Lupo Piero Summa’s Lupo) ride away to Paris from Berlin. It’s an authentic introduction to the entertaining mundanity of fulfilling an obligation these siblings feel to their now-deceased father. This was the car from their childhood––perhaps ensuring it can live on will help them move forward past their own petty grievances with each other.
Written and directed by Sara Summa as an auto-fictional road trip with her real-life brother, Arthur&Diana sees the pair together for what might be the longest time in years––ever since Diana left home to start her life in Berlin, leaving Arthur in...

Sara Summa’s European road movie “Arthur & Diana,” which will make its world premiere in the Discovery section of Toronto Film Festival, has been picked up for world sales by Vienna-based Square Eyes. The film is debuting its trailer with Variety.
The film centers on siblings Arthur and Diana. Together with Diana’s two-year-old son, they leave Berlin for Paris for a short, relaxed trip for the required annual safety inspection of their rusty old Renault. But the journey will turn out not so relaxed, the direction not Paris, and whether the car will get to its destination is all too questionable.
Summa said: “‘Arthur & Diana’ is a very significant film for me personally, because it is an autofictional experiment in which my two-year-old son, my brother, and I play the protagonists of this purely fictional road movie. With this second feature I wanted to convey some joie de vivre...
