One of the most stunning episodes I've ever seen
those_who_dig7 February 2017
I'm being deliberately vague in my comments below as I'd hate to spoil this episode: Visit any forum or review of this episode and you'll see innumerable comments like "I never expected that!" or "I'm stunned." Almost nothing you read in response to "First Battle: Defense of Trost, Part 1" is an over-reaction or an exaggeration of events. It simply stands as one of the most boldly executed TV episodes I've ever seen.

The shock factor isn't the only thing driving this instalment of "Attack on Titan". The voice acting, evocative use of flashbacks, and very imaginative action sequences are certainly impressive.

I have very high hopes for this series.

Crazy good

This episode completely lived up to the hype. It's crazy how good this episode was. Stellar work from start to finish. From the opening action sequence to the unbelievable and emotional final minutes. This episode felt like one big risk that paid off. We have amazing action, interesting character development and interactions, and an excellent use of flashbacks. Armin's fear of battle was just perfectly portrayed. This episode makes you want to watch the next one immediately afterwards. A TV series this good in only 5 episodes is something special.

Was left speachless!

So yeah this is where this show REALLY gets good! The pilot was shocking, but this is the episode where all rules are ignored and the show does something no one could have anticipated!

The first time I watched this episode i could not believe what I just saw, when the episode ended! I really wish i could get back to that first time when my jaw just dropped! Though i have to say this episode is nothing compared to what we get later on in the series! Compared to that... this is nothing!

The animation in this episode is also solid what some great ODM gear scenes! Soundtrack is also great and i like how it quickly goes from up-beat to dark.. just like the show itself!

Best episode of this season.

Warning: Spoilers
----Dont read this until episode 9

So yes, these series cannot get better than this episode. That is not to say that the rest isn't worth watching or considered 'bad' in my book, because this series in overall is very exciting to watch. However, the particularly episode gave an empowering feeling followed by a defeated one. Near the end, my jaw dropped to the floor. Erens death was unexpected and shocking. It seems like the story continues with Erens spirit in the minds of the others. Although he did die, his character had a significant effect on others. His death felt as big as Sean Beans death in Game of Thrones, but it turns out it doesn't.

It is too bad the writer negated this plot twist a view episodes later by turning the main story into, what I would like to call, a 'there is only One' -storyline. Think about tales surrounding an exceptional hero, like Neo in The Matrix or Goku in Dragon Ball Z. Yes, there allies matter, but the primary weapon of 'the good guys' is this solitary warrior that does what others can't.

The acting, music, writing and directing felt in sync with each other in this episode, ending with this excellent climax. I can only hope the writers dare to take the risk of keeping their characters dead next time.

Great episode and shocking ending
Luisvtw6 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"First Battle: Defense of Trost, Part 1" is another great episode that drives the viewer to keep watching. You learn new things about the Titans like what their weaknesses are and how they live. You notice how Eren's character develops a lot. The shocking ending showed that no one is safe and anyone can die.

Recap: With the sudden appearance of the Colossal Titan humanity once again faces its extinction at the hands of the Titans. A determined Eren is now ready to use the skills he developed in the Cadets to kill the invading Titans. However Eren is about to learn the harsh reality that just because he thinks he's ready for combat that doesn't mean he is.

What an amazing episode!
ICtolic1814 March 2023
Well, I am not a huge Attack on Titan fan, but this episode DEFINITELY stunned me and left me speechless at the end. It was absolutely impressive, with amazing animation, stunning visuals, brilliant pacing, and shocking plot twists, especially the last one, which was totally unexpected. Also, the soundtrack was really cool, swiftly changing its' tone from light-hearted to dark!

Honestly, I really couldn't believe what I have just seen and the fact that this episode hooked me till the very end was plain awesome.

This is where I stop judging the anime by its' cover and watch it no matter what. It was a true masterpiece of an episode.

10/10.

The first sign that this show is on a league of its own.
javiersilva-6169628 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Disclaimer: This is a review with the benefit of hindisght.

Bold doesn't even begin to cut it. While the previous episodes were enough to make this show top tier, this one sends it way over the top. Killing the MC just 5 episodes in (dramatic, epic, savage and emotional as they were) is something that will shock even the most seasoned anime viewers.

And that's just the end, there's a whole episode of crazyness that we had to endure in order to witness it. We are shown what Eren is made of (what he always was and always will be) when he goes 1 on 1 with the Colossal, while he's squadmates are too shocked at the destruction of the inner gate to do anything. But alas, the giant foe vanishes just as quickly as he appeared. The hell that was unleashed 5 years ago it's about to return, but humanity is prepared this time, that's what has been shown to us in the two previous episodes. It's time for a showdown, humans vs titans, this time they won't have it so easy... is what a normal show would do but not SnK. All the hope and hype gets turned around into tragedy and despair, as our group of heroes (who we were starting to like) get easily bested by the titans. We are left with the first true cliffhanger of this show (many more to come) when Eren saves his best friend and becomes himself titan food.

This is the begining of an intense, long, dramatic, tragic and hopeful arc that also has consequences far beyond it's own season, some that we could not possibly imagine.

Dark and harrowing
shaunryan-3937330 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The last few episodes were slow and light hearted the reason was so that it would make this episode more gruesome and it worked the music is better than ever and the action is anticlimactic which shows the difference in power between humans and titans that ending shocked me now I want to watch the next episode more than ever 10/10.

Rewatch, 9.9/10
dcdude-269882 September 2023
This wasn't as good as the time I first watched it, but this was still a pretty amazing episode either way. This is was definitely way better than most episodes I have ever watched in my life. Like I said in my other rating, just imagine what my future ratings will be once I finally get to the third and fourth season of the show. I think once I catch up to everyone in the series, my ranking of the seasons will just be s4>s3>s2>s1, because the two episodes that I have watched in the second season were better than some of the first season episodes. Anyways, my favorite characters in this episode were Eren, Armin, and Mikasa, snd my favorite things about this episode were the Protagonist, the action, and the ending. Can't wait to get to the other episodes ahead.
