I'm being deliberately vague in my comments below as I'd hate to spoil this episode: Visit any forum or review of this episode and you'll see innumerable comments like "I never expected that!" or "I'm stunned." Almost nothing you read in response to "First Battle: Defense of Trost, Part 1" is an over-reaction or an exaggeration of events. It simply stands as one of the most boldly executed TV episodes I've ever seen.
The shock factor isn't the only thing driving this instalment of "Attack on Titan". The voice acting, evocative use of flashbacks, and very imaginative action sequences are certainly impressive.
I have very high hopes for this series.
