Learn more- An ultra-modern megachurch worship service with hundreds in the audience. The pastor delivers a moving message and motions for new believers to stand. Tom, a 25-year-old entrepreneur with big dreams, stands up - he walks out of the church a brand new Christian. So now what?
After the service, Tom meets with his roommate and practical-minded business partner, Kyle, and they talk about their fledgling business. They've got big ideas with little substance, and Tom's neighbor and local nicotine addict Lenny isn't afraid to let them know it. Tom can't stand the idea of having a 9-5 desk job with a boss - to him it's a fate worse than death. Tom and Kyle head to the megachurch Bible study and meet Kevin, an overly-positive pastor who avoids conflict like the plague. Afterwards, Kyle breaks the news to Tom that they don't have the money to make rent this month.
Tom gets a call from his sister, Sam: their mother is dying and he needs to get to the hospital. The siblings are able to spend some time with Mom before she passes - and Tom learns she left him an inheritance in her will. Putting off his grief, Tom decides he'll use the inheritance money to pay rent and get business off the ground. He just has to wait until the funeral to get it.
Tom returns to Bible study to share what he's going through and gains plenty of sympathy - then he asks a simple "why" and non-answers arise. Why is Tom dealing with pain? Kevin's only answer - "God works mysteriously." On their way out, Tom and Kevin are approached by Nicole, a rather shy marketing major, who offers to help with the duos' business troubles. Kyle is hesitant, but Tom is on board. She's hired. Nicole sees Tom's frustrations with Bible study and suggests he take a break from the megachurch, much to Kyle's disapproval.
Could another church have an answer to the problem of pain? Lenny doesn't think so, but Tom isn't fazed.
