Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos’ next film, Bugonia, will premiere in November 2025, and will star Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos is following up the acclaimed Poor Things with an anthology film, Kinds Of Kindness this month. But before the latter film’s even been released, the date for his next film has been announced: Focus Features has said that Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, will premiere in US cinemas on the 7th November 2025.
A film Lanthimos has had in the works for a while, Bugonia is a remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy, Save The Green Planet!. The original, a hit in its home country, was about a deranged man who, convinced of an imminent alien invasion, kidnaps an executive in the mistaken belief that he’s one of the invaders.

Yorgos Lanthimos has firmly established himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary cinema. Renowned for his audacious narratives and unconventional storytelling, he has crafted films that remain etched in the viewer’s mind. However, his latest offering, Kinds of Kindness, misses the mark despite its intriguing premise. Kinds of Kindness marks a reunion between Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou, known for their collaborative efforts on Dogtooth, The Lobster, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The film presents a triptych of stories that delve into the depths of human loneliness and despair, featuring actors like Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, and Emma Stone...

Bugonia, Yorgos Lanthimos’ next film, to star Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, will be released wide in the U.S. on Nov. 7, 2025, Focus Features said Tuesday.
Universal Pictures will release Bugonia internationally, excluding Korea, where Cj Enm will handle the local release. The film, written by Will Tracy, follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.
Bugonia sees Lanthimos leave his recent home of Searchlight Pictures, which has released many of his films, including the Oscar winners Poor Things and The Favourite as well as the upcoming Kinds of Kindness. Lanthimos’ latest movie is based on the South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet!, written and directed by Jang Joon-Hwan and produced by Sidus.
Stone also worked with Lanthimos on The Favourite and Poor Things, while Plemons and Stone appear in Kinds of Kindness.

Over the years, Yorgos Lanthimos has transitioned from a niche Greek filmmaker to a renowned auteur whose collaborations with Emma Stone garner critical acclaim and Oscar buzz. His latest release, Kinds of Kindness, features a trio of eerie stories about desolation and extreme measures people take for solace. This film follows last year’s award-winning Poor Things, in which Stone stars as a reanimated woman—a peculiar yet watchable tale. A Longstanding Collaboration Lanthimos and his regular co-writer Efthimis Filippou continue their partnership in Kinds of Kindness. Their history spans projects like The Lobster (starring Rachel Weisz) and seminal works such as...

Satires are not easy. When done right, a satire leaves you in stitches from all the laughter, but has you critically thinking about the themes and messages once the credits roll. From The Lobster, Dr. Strange or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Jojo Rabbit, or Idiocracy; these very films have different messages that touch on politics, love/relationships, war, or the de-evolution of humanity. That brings us to the latest film that joins the list of satires: The American Society of Magical Negroes. The synopsis of Kobi Libii‘s film is as follows: Aren, who is recruited...

With Kinds Of Kindness, his ninth feature film, Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos reinforces his formidable reputation as one of the great directors of contemporary world cinema. This triptych piece — studded with the characteristically oddball humour, violent shocks and sexual preoccupation of Lanthimos’ best work —is his version of going back to basics. His third consecutive collaboration with Emma Stone is perhaps the most stripped-down of the trio, unadorned by the ornate period trappings of The Favourite and the intricate, Victorian-steampunk production design of Alasdair Gray adaptation Poor Things. It’s shot and set in modern New Orleans, but far from the instantly recognisable Creole architecture of the French Quarter: seemingly prosaic offices, roads and suburban homes are the core locations. As ever with Lanthimos, though, the action is rarely run-of-the-mill.

[Editor’s note: This list was originally published in December. It has since been updated to include new films from the director.]
Yorgos Lanthimos’ films all look different from each other, but they feel the same. Since the Greek director has made the transition from independent Greek cinema to larger Hollywood productions, the washed-out, largely white palettes and simple trappings of his earliest films have given way to more sumptuous cinematography and staging. Even the frills of thrillers like “The Lobster” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” feel bare-bones compared to his recent embrace of the costume drama with “The Favourite” and “Poor Things,” both of which feature alternatively gorgeous and (intentionally!) garish production design and costuming.
But when you look past the budget and the aesthetics of each film, every movie that Lanthimos has made feels like they share a similar cinematic language. The characters in his films tend to communicate through stilted but natural dialogue that often tilts toward deadpan, and hide their cruelty behind politeness and social niceties.

“It didn’t really start as a story about family dysfunction and such. In the beginning, I was wondering about family life and parenting in general and if the way we think about it would ever really change.”
In an interview with Pamela Jahn of Electric Sheep Magazine, Yorgos Lanthimos muses on his initial thought process behind the creation of his acclaimed 2009 absurdist family drama Dogtooth. In the above quote, the director who would come to be known to English-speaking audiences through hilariously nightmarish features like The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Poor Things, and the upcoming Kinds of Kindness explains how the idea of Dogtooth slowly began to form after a conversation with some soon-to-be-newlywed friends.
In the wake of their union, Lanthimos would make some slight and friendly jabs at their decision to marry and start a family despite the high chances of divorce. A joke on his part,...

After knocking it out of the park with Poor Things last year, director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone are back at the box office with Kinds Of Kindness from Searchlight, which looks set to shake up a sluggish arthouse market with the best limited opening this year.
The best PTA in 2024 so far is The Taste Of Things from IFC Films, which debuted at $43.4k on three screens back in February. Kinds of Kindness at five locations in New York and LA will pull ahead of that, significantly perhaps. The market’s been odd so it’s hard to say by how much yet. Tune in Sunday.
Also this weekend, Thelma, a crowd pleaser with a terrific June Squibb, launches on 1,280 screens, the widest release ever by distributor Magnolia Pictures. A24’s Janet Planet, the first feature by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker,...

Plot: A trilogy of darkly comedic tales surrounding a businessman who can’t make decisions for himself, a police officer who thinks his wife has been replaced by someone else, and a pair of cult members on the lookout for the next messiah.
Review: Is Yorgos Lanthimos messing with us? That was the inescapable thought roaming around my head as I watched Kinds of Kindness, the Poor Things director’s latest morbid take on love, personal freedom, and those bizarre creatures known as human beings.. The answer to the question is… probably. And even if he isn’t messing with us, he knows it seems like he is.
If that doesn’t make much sense right off the bat, well, neither does Kinds of Kindness, at least not after only one viewing. Cheeky and uninterested in supplying an orthodox moviegoing experience, the film finds Lanthimos in the same mood he...

Last year every cinephil seemed to be blown away by the enigmatic tale about a woman on her way to understand herself after she is brought back to life via brain transplant. Poor Things was one of the most critically acclaimed hits of 2023, if not the biggest one.
The main key to the success of this movie was, undoubtedly, Emma Stone’s obvious talent for delivering both comedy and drama performances. It is also proved by her roles in Birdman (2014), La La Land (2016), and the period hit The Favourite (2018).
If you’re a fan of the Poor Things actress who enjoys her multi-genre acting, here is some good news for you. Stone is set to star in a brand-new dramedy that is just around the corner to reach theaters, and you should definitely see it this weekend.
The new must-watch appears to be an anthology of 3 different, yet loosely connected stories.

Colin Farrell has had a stellar few years, turning in exquisite performance after exquisite performance in a variety of projects from deadpan comedy movies such as “The Lobster” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” to a transformative turn in the superhero flick “The Batman.”
Farrell has delivered another enigmatic performance with the Apple TV+ detective series “Sugar.” In this neo-noir drama, Farrell plays private investigator John Sugar, who delves into the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of a famous Hollywood producer. Farrell is as magnetic as ever in, wielding his natural charisma and captivating screen presence with ease while also sowing in the sort of sad, lamentable quality that he displayed in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” a film that earned him his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor). Critics have applauded Farrell for his turn in “Sugar.”

Who is “Kinds of Kindness,” the brain-bending new film from director Yorgos Lanthimos, for? While it may not be for those swept up by the queenly regalia of “The Favourite” or the dystopic steampunk Victorianism of “Poor Things,” remember that those films made audiences uncomfortable, too: With a wickedly perverse sense of humor that often erupts in violence. (First reactions at Cannes called it a “dark” and “twisted” return to Lanthimos’ early form.)
That’s the modus operandi of “Kinds of Kindness,” which stars Jesse Plemons, Emma Stone, and Willem Dafoe, and tells three tales of subsumed identity, cultlike bewitchment, and fleshly appetites, kinky sex, and all the gamut of self-aware Lanthimos weirdness. Here, he’s not working with screenwriter Tony McNamara. Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film Kinds of Kindness debuted at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival following Oscars buzz for the director’s film Poor Things. The filmmaker’s last project to premiere at the French festival was The Killing of a Sacred Deer starring Nicole Kidman, Barry G. Bernson, Herb Caillouet, Bill Camp, Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Alicia Silverstone and more. Kinds of Kindness marks reunions with Emma Stone, Joe Alwyn, Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe for the director. This will be Stone’s third film with Lanthimos, and her second Lanthimos film co-starring with Joe Alwyn after 2018’s The Favourite.

Shot while in post-production on Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness shares with its predecessor a preoccupation with the struggle to achieve autonomy in a bounded world. While the film does mark a return to the austere aesthetics of earlier Lanthimos films like Dogtooth and The Lobster, the more operative change that supersedes and to a degree governs that aesthetic recourse is the swapping out of Tony McNamara, the writer of Poor Things and co-writer of The Favourite, for Efthimis Filippou, who collaborated with Lanthimos on the scripts for The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Lobster, Alps, and Dogtooth.
Readers familiar with Lanthimos’s work will easily recognize the stark tonal divide between these groups of films. Director Yorgos Lanthimos is keenly interested in the systems that bind us. Most of his films are about how humans — we whimsical, self-serious egotists — require strictures and societal bindings to function, even if those bindings are absurd, harmful, or wholly invented by power-mad weirdos. The only thing that can free us from our self-imposed hairshirts, usually, is our sexual agency. That was certainly true of Lanthimos' 2023 Oscar darling "Poor Things," in which a woman with the brain of an infant grew into a self-actualized bisexual sex worker, once she was freed of the influence of boorish men who would seek to control her body.
Additionally, in the 2009 film "Dogtooth," Lanthimos told the story of three adult children being raised by a father who, for what can only be a sociological experiment, kept them imprisoned in their home, teaching them a surreal, alternate vocabulary. In "The Lobster," the rituals of love...

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have emerged as quite the duo in recent years. The director and actress managed to turn both "The Favourite" and "Poor Things" into rare, original box office hits that also went on to garner some major awards season love. Now, they're back together again with another dark comedy in the form of "Kinds of Kindness," which is rolling out in select theaters next weekend before expanding nationwide in the coming weeks. The question is, can Lanthimos and Stone pull off a hat trick and go three for three?

Stars: Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer | Written by Yorgos Lanthimos, Efthimis Filippou | Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos
Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos reteams with stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley for this bizarre triptych of stories that are simultaneously surreal, disturbing and darkly funny. Co-written by Efthimis Filippou, who previously collaborated with Lanthimos on Dogtooth, The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, the film marks a thrilling return to the director’s signature strangeness and the unsettling sensibilities of the Greek Weird Wave.
Set in present-day New Orleans, Kinds of Kindness tells three separate stories, with each cast member playing three different characters. The stories are nominally linked by a character named in their titles, though there is very little narrative overlap, only repeated echoes of themes, lines and images.

“Norway” director Yannis Veslemes’ “She Loved Blossoms More,” which will world premiere at the Tribeca Festival, has unveiled its first teaser.
The film follows three brothers who build an unusual time machine in order to bring their long-dead mother back to life. When their delusional father comes into the picture, the experiments go awry, and they descend into a psychedelic hellscape where the past and present fuse in a comedic yet disturbing exploration of grief.
“Norway” had an extended festival run including Karlovy Vary and Fantasporto and won a Fipresci prize at Thessaloniki.
“She Loved Blossoms More” is produced by Fenia Cossovitsa (“Two Tickets to Greece”) and executive producers include Christos V. Konstantakopoulos (“The Lobster”), Ant Timpson (“Come to Daddy”) and Andreas Zoupanos Kritikos (“Knock at the Cabin”).
The cast includes Panos Papadopoulos, Julio Giorgos Katsis, Aris Balis, Sandra Abuelghanam Sarafanova, Alexia Kaltsiki and Dominique Pinon.

Just a few months after his eccentric alt-history sci-fi movie "Poor Things" swept the Oscars with four wins (including a Best Actress award for lead Emma Stone), director Yorgos Lanthimos is back with a new film. "Kinds of Kindness" once again stars Stone, alongside her fellow "Poor Things" performers Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe. And the talent doesn't stop there, with Jesse Plemons ("Breaking Bad"), Hong Chau ("The Whale"), Joe Alwyn ("The Favourite"), Mamoudou Athie ("Archive 81"), and Hunter Schafer ("Euphoria") also in the mix.
Lanthimos will really be getting the most out of that stellar cast by having each actor in three different roles. "We had started out with one story, but as we were working on it, we thought that it might be interesting to make a film that has a different structure to what we had done before," Lanthimos explains in the press notes, referring to himself and...

Colin Farrell is a versatile Irish actor who has excelled in a variety of genres, from action films to dramas and from wild comedies to very very dark comedies.
Farrell has had the good fortune to work with many of the best directors out there, including Terence Malick and Steven Spielberg. Two writers/directors in particular have been instrumental in pushing Farrell to new artistic ground. Martin McDonagh directed Farrell to his first Golden Globe win (Best Actor for “In Bruges”), and Yorgos Lanthimos led Farrell to his second Best Actor Globe nomination, this time for “The Lobster.”
And most recently, he has received acclaim for “The Banshees of Inisherin” with his first Oscar nomination and become a DC villain in “The Batman.”

The tragic predicament of the Palestinians and what they’re now being subjected to begs to be analyzed and dissected, with various areas of dubious historical consensus put to new scrutiny; in Mahdi Fleifel’s fiction debut To a Land Unknown, we’re solely in a disorienting present tense, where there’s seldom time to think and reflect, only to agitate for survival.
The director himself was raised in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, a background echoed in the film’s key characters, before he settled in Denmark and studied in the UK; thus, he’s never lived under direct contact with the Israeli occupation. Acclaimed docs followed, most notably I Signed the Petition, a 10-minute short that went semi-viral, concerning the calls to boycott Radiohead’s 2017 concert in Tel Aviv. Oh, to be one of the chosen. I guarantee this thought washes over every single person attending the Cannes Film Festival, at least at some point. It is a realization laden with ambivalence, as both an exclamation and a lament; it’s the characters in Yorgos Lanthimos’ newest feature, Kinds of Kindness, that have to grapple with a very similar in-between. What validates you can also annihilate you; no surprises here in this conclusion, since the ensnarement of human power dynamics has long fascinated the Greek writer-director. Fittingly, for his 2024 Competition entry, he has teamed up with regular collaborator Efthimis Filippou––their duet on The Lobster won them an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay––to deliver a rapturous thought experiment in three parts. Kinds of Kindness is an anthology-of-sorts, with three distinct stories that are taking place in the same fictional world in a rather nondescript American setting (New Orleans...

Fremantle’s Rome-based company The Apartment has boarded Karim Aïnouz’s next feature Rosebushpruning in partnership with The Match Factory, Mubi, Kavac Film and Rai Cinema.
It marks the first big film announcement for The Apartment since the arrival of Annamaria Morelli as its CEO in February, following the departure of founder Lorenzo Mieli.
As announced in Cannes this week, Kristen Stewart, Josh O’Connor, and Elle Fanning are signed to co-star in Rosebushpruning, which shoots later this year.
Aïnouz is directing from a script written by Efthimis Filippou, adapted from Marco Bellocchio’s debut feature Fists in the Pocket, a satirical drama about a dysfunctional family.
Viola Fügen and Michael Weber are producing Rosebushpruning for The Match Factory, which is also handling worldwide sales for the film.
The adaptation rights have been acquired from Kavac Film also attached at the production team with Simone Gattoni.

Joe Alwyn has been the center of much media attention in the last few years. That may be news if you’ve been living in a hermetically sealed bunker. But outside that particular and unsolicited spotlight, the dandyish 33-year-old British actor has carved his name out in films from idiosyncratic auteurs. There was Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir Part II” as a grieving and queer-flirting film editor; Claire Denis’ sensuous 2022 Cannes Grand Prix winner “Stars at Noon” as a Brit adrift in Nicaragua having lots of sex with Margaret Qualley’s character; and most recently “Kinds of Kindness,” whose director Yorgos Lanthimos he previously starred for as a lusty baron in “The Favourite.”
Alwyn is back this year at Cannes in three roles in “Kinds of Kindness,” co-written with Lanthimos by his friend and “Alps” and “The Lobster” collaborator Efthimis Flippou. Which means we are very much in the mode of old-school Lanthimos,...

As the 77th Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25) arrives at its halfway point, here is THR executive editor of awards Scott Feinberg’s assessment of the awards prospects — at the Cannes closing ceremony and later in the fall — of the films that have screened at the fest so far.
The Two That Popped
One cannot know what the specific preferences and priorities of the Greta Gerwig-led main competition jury are, but one can categorically state that two competition films — both of which are so original and out-there that they have to be seen to be believed — have been particularly well received. Both garnered nine-minute standing ovations and rave reviews, including particular praise for their leading lady.
The first is The Substance, a body-horror flick from French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat that might be described as Sunset Blvd. meets Freaks, and an instant classic. Demi Moore, in a gutsy career-best turn...

Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are hungry, wolfing down sandwiches at the start of our “Kinds of Kindness” interview. They’re in Cannes to promote the singular three-part anthology film, which has been well-received. They laugh a lot. She’s a Yorgos Lanthimos veteran, and just won her second Oscar embodying the free-spirited Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” After that, it seems, nothing will faze her and she’ll do anything for her soulmate director. Announced at Cannes: Their next movie to be shot this summer, “Bugonia” (Focus Features), a remake of a Korean thriller, co-starring Plemons.

Jesse Plemons has become an undisputed auteur’s favorite. The 36-year-old star’s beguiling unshowiness onscreen has landed him memorable parts in films from Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master), Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies, The Post), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon), Charlie Kaufman (I’m Thinking of Ending Things), Adam McKay (Vice) and Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), among so many others. Arguably even more viewers know him from his indelible work on the small screen, which began with his breakthrough role on NBC’s Friday Night Lights, continued through AMC’s landmark hit series Breaking Bad and culminated with an Emmy nomination for FX’s Fargo, where he met his wife, actress and co-star Kirsten Dunst.
Plemons touched down for the Cannes Film Festival on Friday for the world premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, the acclaimed Greek director’s follow-up to his multi-Oscar-winning period fantasy Poor Things.

A film that went into production as they were still doing post-production on Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness becomes Yorgos Lanthimos‘ third trip to the Cannes competition after presenting The Lobster in 2015 and then The Killing of a Sacred Dear in 2017 (both films won the Best Screenplay prize). We of course fondly remember becoming acquainted with his work when Dogtooth won the Un Certain Regard section in 2009. Yorgos Lanthimos can’t stop (won’t stop!) working with Oscar winner Emma Stone, casting the actress once again as leading lady for his next project “Bugonia.”
The drama will also star Jesse Plemons who, along with Stone, appears in Lanthimos’ forthcoming “Kinds of Kindness.” That three-chapter feature just premiered on Friday at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“Bugonia” follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. The script is from heat-seeking “Succession” and “The Menu” writer Will Tracy.
Focus Features has won domestic rights to distribute the project. Universal Pictures will roll out the film in global territories, save Korea where “Parasite” producer Cj Enm will release. The latter is financing the film with Fremantle. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent brokered the rights deal.
This package is loaded with pedigree.

Fans of Greek surrealist filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos know that there's a lot to love about his dark, bizarre films, but it can be very difficult to recommend them to people. Social rules are often thrown out the window and what we think of as standard human behavior is often turned on its head, which make his films uncomfortable even before digging into some of the tougher subject matter. For those who are willing to view the world through Lanthimos' slightly tilted (and fish-eyed) lens, however, these films are beautiful explorations of the human condition. But which is the best? If someone were going to dip their toe into his work, or only had the time and energy to watch one film, which film should they pick?

Those lucky enough to have discovered Yorgos Lanthimos right as he was establishing himself as a world-cinema weirdo — we’d carbon-date the initial who-the-fuck-is-this-guy?! moment as mid-2009, when his breakthrough film Dogtooth was worming its way through the festival circuit — remember what a shock it was to encounter the Greek filmmaker’s work. It was absurd, abstract, capable of spanning the humor gamut from deadpan to super-dark. Not even the gradual inclusion of name-brand actors like Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Nicole Kidman could dull the bewilderment (try explaining the...

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds Of Kindness has landed top of Screen International’s Cannes jury grid with an average score of 2.4.
The triptych drama is the first film so far to receive a four (excellent), both from Le Meduza’s Anton Dolin and Screen’s own critic. Others were less convinced with Mathieu Macharet (France’s Le Monde) and Stephanie Zacharek (US Time) both giving it just one (poor).

At this point, any actor signing on for a Yorgos Lanthimos film knows they wont be resting on their laurels. Literally. One of his trademarks is a kind of heightened physicality — whether its Rachel Weisz and Joe Alwyn twerking in “The Favourite,” Emma Stone “furious jumping” in “Poor Things” or Nicole Kidman lending a man a hand, so to speak, in a parking lot in “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”
This kind of movement, be it awkward, sexy or just bizarre, came up on Saturday during the Cannes Film Festival press conference for Lanthimos’ latest, “Kinds of Kindness.” Reunited with Stone, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, and newcomers Jesse Plemons, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer and Hong Chau, the new project sees the acting troupe engage in group sex, hardcore breakdancing, reckless driving and some light cannibalism. Another day on a Lanthimos set.

Everyone wanted to know about the nudity and bawdy sex scenes in Searchlight’s Kinds of Kindness at the pic’s riotous Cannes Film Festival press conference Saturday but politely referred to it as “physicality.”
Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest, an anthology of three short films, covers plenty of off-kilter people with absurd attractions to each other, amid various perversions including stalking, finger chopping and orgies. Oh, there’s also a twin motif going on.
Fielding questions about the bawdy scenes in his movie, Lanthimos said, “Physicality is very important and body language” in his movies.
“I very often start from that … our rehearsal process always starts with physicality instead of intellectualizing things,” the five-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker added.
“It’s just observing life,” said the filmmaker about the spiciness in his canon, “a lot of it is dark and ridiculous and awkwardness, we try to inform all of that.”

After his sortie with fantastical drama Poor Things (garlanded with no less than four Oscars), Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos returns with Emma Stone in Kinds Of Kindness which is more in touch with the sensibilities and ethos of his arresting earlier works such as The Lobster, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and Dogtooth.
Kinds Of Kindness consists of three interconnecting stories all of which display his idiosyncratic flights of fancy. In the first Jesse Plemons, who has the demeanour of a young Philip Seymour Hoffman, is in the thrall of his tyrant of a boss (Willem Dafoe), who exerts control over every detail of his life. When he is asked to do an unthinkable task he discovers that a woman (played by Emma Stone) is in the same dilemma. Finally he is unsure if he actually wants the freedom at the end of the tunnel.
In the second segment Plemons again.

Mamoudou Athie can practically taste the lobster rolls from the Carlton hotel. He smiles wistfully as he taps into that sense memory of his first trip to the Cannes Film Festival. In 2023, Athie voiced the lead role in Disney-Pixar’s “Elemental,” which closed the fest. And he’s returning this week as part of the first-rate ensemble of Yorgos Lanthimos’ offbeat movie “Kinds of Kindness.”
Discussion of the crustacean-filled dish might seem irrelevant, but it’s perhaps not incidental. Athie begins our conversation by revealing that his first encounter with Lanthimos’ unique sensibilities was 2015’s “The Lobster.” The Mauritanian American actor, who was studying at Yale School of Drama at the time, was captivated by the originality of the material and the conviction the filmmaker brought to his craft.

Following four Oscar wins just a few months ago for his Emma Stone-starrer Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos unveiled his latest feature at Cannes’ Grand Theatre Lumiere this evening. His three-hour absurdist anthology Kinds of Kindness, also starring Stone as well as Willem Dafoe and Jesse Plemons, reaped a six-minute ovation.
The Searchlight Pictures title also stars Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer.
The anthology movie is described as a “triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”
In her review for Deadline, Stephanie Bunbury called it “puzzling, brilliant and, in all honesty, not easy to like.”

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness,” starring Emma Stone, freaked out Cannes Film Festival on Friday night with an anthology of stories about sex cults, cannibalism and general debauchery.
Lanthimos’ follow-up to “Poor Things” earned a 4.5-minute standing ovation, with the director and his cast — including Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie and Joe Alwyn — leaving while the applause was still going. “Kinds of Kindness” tells three distinctive stories with cast members playing different roles in each. There were a few walkouts during the Cannes premiere, most of them coming after the film’s gorier, second chapter. Lanthimos abruptly left the screening and didn’t speak to audience members once the clapping stopped.
The film, like many of Lanthimos’ avant-garde offerings, overflows with outré plot twists as well as some outrageous moments — like Chau licking sweat off her followers as part of a cult ritual, a man...

Yorgos Lanthimos revealed his particular brand of niceness as the Cannes Film Festival presented the world premiere of his twisted Kinds of Kindness on Friday night.
The film, which reunites The Favourite and Poor Things director Lanthimos and star Emma Stone, was greeted with a 4-minute ovation inside the packed Grand Lumiere Theatre. As far as Cannes ovations go, that’s on the short end of the spectrum (Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis clocked in at 10 minutes Thursday night, while at Venice last year, Lanthimos’ Poor Things received minutes of cheers). Still, basking in the applause were Lanthimos and Stone, fellow Poor Things alums Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, plus Jesse Plemons, Mamoudou Athie, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn and Hunter Schafer. Others in attendance including Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Nomadland filmmaker Chloe Zhao and Ukrainian 20 days in Mariupol documentarian Mstyslav Chernov.

The latest Yorgos Lanthimos / Emma Stone team-up, a film called Kinds of Kindness (previously known as And), is set to reach theatres on June 21st – but first, it’s having its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which is now underway. The first reviews of Kinds of Kindness are now arriving online, and they’re describing this 165 minute “triptych fable” as dark, bizarre, insidious, intriguing, brilliant, bonkers, disturbing, puzzling, funny, surreal, creepy, mind-bending, twisted, and innovative. We have rounded up some of them below led by one from our own Eric Walkuski!
Our man @ericwalkuski just caught #KindsofKindness: Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness defies easy description; it's a trilogy of morbid tales that will beguile some, repel others. Uneven as a whole, the film still has enough shock value and absurd dark humor to keep you on your…

Who is Rmf? We never do find out. Yorgos Lanthimos’ trio of stories in Kinds of Kindness are titled The Death of Rmf, Rmf is Flying and Rmf Eats a Sandwich.
Rmf is a silent, bearded man identified by the monogram on his shirt. In the first story, he arrives at a Georgian mansion to take delivery of an envelope. Vivian (Margaret Qualley) – concubine to aging tycoon Raymond, usually seen in a skimpy satin wrap – answers the door, takes his photograph and hands over the envelope. It may contain money. Rmf is about to become the target of a series of planned car crashes. Why? We won’t find that out either.
Thus begins a long, wild trail through three otherwise ostensibly unrelated stories, all featuring the same actors playing different roles in each story. All three stories do, however, reflect Lanthimos’ recurrent motifs: control, cruelty and erotomania.

Two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone further expands her cinematic universe alongside auteur Yorgos Lanthimos with their latest collaboration “Kinds of Kindness.”
Yet while “Poor Things” was an Academy Award-winning feature, the Cannes premiere for “Kinds of Kindness” seemed to puzzle critics and fans alike. The feature, which was originally titled “And”, is Lanthimos’ eighth film and co-stars Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons, Hunter Schafer, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau, and Mamoudou Athie.
Lanthimos previously described the contemporary anthology film as being “three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story, so they all play three different parts,” which, according to the director, was “almost like making three films” in one.
Lanthimos reunited with frequent screenwriter collaborator Efthimis Filippou to pen the script for “Kinds of Kindness.” The duo previously co-wrote Lanthimos’ “Dogtooth,” “The Lobster,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” and “Alps.”

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains mild spoilers.
A submissive office worker lets his boss dictate everything, from what he wears to the woman he marries. In the next segment, the same actor (Jesse Plemons) assumes a different role, playing a cop grieving his wife’s disappearance. When she resurfaces (in the form of Emma Stone), he’s less than enthused when she tries to dominate him in the bedroom. Finally, a woman (also Stone) abandons her marriage to follow a kinky cult leader (Willem Dafoe) who’s ordered her to find an elusive faith healer.
With “Kinds of Kindness,” director Yorgos Lanthimos — a pioneering member of the Greek Weird Wave — serves up a triple helping of strange. After achieving both box office and awards acclaim with “The Favourite” and “Poor Things”, the merciless surrealist does a hard reset, reteaming with “Dogtooth” scribe Efthimis Filippou on several deadpan parodies of...

Robert is a New Orleans businessman so devoted to his boss that he allows him to control every detail of his schedule down to the minute, from what time he goes to bed at night to what time he makes love to his wife in the morning. Daniel is a police officer who becomes suspicious of his wife after she returns to him from being lost at sea; convinced that she’s been replaced by an impostor, he asks the supposed doppelgänger to commit increasingly demented acts of self-harm as a test of her love. “I probably won’t be doing the yacht parties that I’ve heard about,” jokes Hong Chau of attending her first Cannes Film Festival several months after having her second child. “I’m like, ‘Well, I’m going to be pumping.'”
Chau will be touching down in France for the premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, the director’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning Poor Things that will premiere in competition at the fest. In Kindness, out June 21 via Searchlight, Chau stars alongside Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Jesse Plemons, each playing several roles across the anthology film, which unfolds in three parts.
The official synopsis for the film says it follows a man who seeks to break free from his predetermined path, a cop who questions his wife’s demeanor after her return from a supposed drowning and a woman’s quest to locate a renowned spiritual guide.

Picturehouse managing director Clare Binns says the company’s move into film financing is due to a changing industry, in which Picturehouse can “help films actually get over the line.”
The distributor-exhibitor is kicking off its financing activities with Harry Lighton’s feature debut Pillion starring Alexander Skarsgard and Harry Melling, shooting this summer for Element Pictures, developed and co-financed by BBC Film.
Without revealing exact figures, Binns says Picturehouse put “a little bit into the pot” after Element sent Binns the script. This built on the strong relationship between Picturehouse and Element dating back to Yorgos Lanthimos’ 2015 The Lobster,...
