- Deepak Singh's (Rajkummar Rao) life as an ex-Army driver who owns a garment store is tangled in the midst of poverty, hope and despair. Deepak's family consists of his ever-supporting wife Rakhi Singh (Patralekha) and his little daughter. They tag along his journey to Mumbai as he is unable to repay money he owes on his store in the village. With no contacts and addresses, except that of his friend, Omkar, Deepak takes extreme measures when stepping to Mumbai while searching for him.
He is easily tricked by two con-men who rent him a Flat for 10,000 RS, only to find out the real game while searching for them for the lease documents. With no details on them, the Mumbai police refuse to file an F.I.R. His wife meets an escort, at the police station, working at a night bar who provides them an under construction flat for time being and convinces her to be a bar dancer till Deepak becomes stable.
Deepak gets hired as driver for a security bureau with a monthly pay of 15,000 Rs. His job is to transfer security boxes (containing valuables on behalf of clients). Deepak's senior Vishnu (Manav Kaul) realizes that he is far too innocent and does various favors for him in order to gain his trust to loot the security agency. He even provides a house for Deepak and his family to stay in. Vishnu tells Deepak that his last partner was killed by goons, when they could not get the keys to open the boxes that he and his partner were carrying. He says that after his partner was killed Vishnu kept the box himself and did not return it to the agency. He needs Deepak's help to steal the keys to the box.
Deepak is extremely against the theft when Vishnu first mentions it. Then Vishnu blackmails him saying that the stolen box is currently kept in Deepak's house. He also reveals that the lease for the house is in Deepak's name and all of Deepak's papers filed with the agency are fraud. So it will appear that Deepak took employment at the agency to steal the key to the stolen box and that Deepak would appear to be part of the gang that killed Vishnu's partner.
Feeling cornered, Deepak agrees to the risky plan of stealing the keys for this box. But in order to out their plan in motion, they need to get another box stolen so that they can gain entry to their command office, where they could get a chance to steal the key to the first stolen box. But while the plan is in progress, it is hijacked by the first gang, and the team is robbed again and during the melee Vishnu is killed (shot dead). Deepak is held responsible and fired by his agency.
Meanwhile, Rakhi loses her job tragically (when she slaps a bar customer when he touches her inappropriately). Deepak finds the box stolen by his senior in his house and comes up with a plan to ensure Rakhi and Mahi's safe return to their village.
The movie ends when his attempt to steal the keys from the agency cost him his life but through a shrewd tactic he is able to pass on Rakhi the key for the stolen box (before being shot Deepak takes an imprint of the key in his locket, which is returned to his wife with his other personal effects, when he dies). Rakhi and Mahi return to the village with Rakhi lost in memory of Deepak and their happy past.
