Simple & to the point,..although unrealistic
In real life it's not easy finding the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. We all know that, it's apart of life. Life is never as easy at it looks. There are too many factors that coexist that just do not permit for such simple access to the things we want. However, if rules do not apply then of course everything would be turned on its head. This is pretty much what Kyle Finnegan, the director of this short looked like he was trying to do. The thing is, he portrays this freedom in two different ways simultaneously.
The first method Finnegan employs is the use of barely expressing emotions. By doing this, it makes the concept of "How to Pick Up Girls" all the more ridiculous yet comical when every day rules are not applied. Who approaches someone with a blank stare? Then there's the other method Finnegan uses which is basically taking the premise of the short and going with what it says. Tell me how often someone would be able to do what the main character does in this short without any kind of restraint? These particular guidelines of what would be done in a normal situation are totally abandoned but this is okay because of its execution.
This is another unique thing about this clip. The way it plays out is like a little instructional video, given with the very simple of steps 1 through whatever. It's also accompanied by old-fashioned music, this matches its tone because of how goofy the idea is if it were to be performed by someone who took the video too seriously. Cinematography also by the director went well with the video. The shots had a drained looked to them which go with the old fashioned music, quick editing and simplistic characters.
The only drawback to the film is that since it's a short, there really isn't much of a plot. Because of this, the development for the characters are not as prevalent. It's understandable since this is a short and there's not much to explore in a short time. Other than that, it is nice entry into this director's filmography. I would be interested in seeing more from this gentleman.
The crew work hard and getting to point with its premise. Although the concept's execution is unrealistic and the character development is almost non existent, the play out is goofy and will have audiences wishing tasks like these could only be so simple.
