- When Love became violent, an abused Woman felt there was only one option left to escape the same-gender domestic violence situation in which she was trapped.
- Two women, Niki and Shea, have made a nice home for themselves and have been living together for several years. Seemingly out of nowhere, however, Shea, a Police Officer, becomes verbally abusive and in time, the abuse progresses to physical assault. Niki left once but Shea followed and dragged her back, threatening anyone who attempted to help Niki get away. Niki loves Shea and has on blinders, typical of abuse victims, so she stays, until the day comes that Shea nearly kills her. Niki seeks help but because their relationship isn't "legally recognized", she doesn't qualify for assistance to leave the situation. Finally, out of desperation, Niki goes to the Domestic Violence Unit at the Police department where Shea is employed, only to be told again, that their same-gender relationship doesn't meet the definition. Niki goes home and is past the point of hope. She is in the bedroom mulling over whether she has any options left when Shea walks in, already angry, and begins to pummel her. Niki sees Shea's duty gun on the bedside table and grabs it, points it at Shea and swears she will shoot. But what happens next is a twist that no one could have anticipated.—Lauren Broussard
