The CW just announced that Green Arrow and the Canaries, the spinoff sequel to Arrow which came to a close last year after 8 seasons, is no longer in development.
The last outing of Oliver Queen not only served as the ultimate swan song for the character that kickstarted the multiverse of heroes on the network all those years ago, but it was also a hopeful reflection on the history of the series and its future. After all, we know that the final season’s penultimate episode, “Green Arrow & the Canaries,” served as a backdoor pilot for a spinoff centering around the adventures of the vigilante’s daughter, Mia Smoak, set in 2040’s Star City. But Deadline has now reported that the company isn’t moving forward with the project, which has undoubtedly left a lot of Arrowverse fans heartbroken.

Backdoor pilots can often be a tricky thing to accomplish, especially if they’re placed into TV projects that already boast a huge built-in fanbase. Whether it was the intention or not, the seventh episode of Stranger Things season 2 certainly appeared to be designed with the intention of gauging audience interest in a spinoff following other people like Eleven, but “The Lost Sister” is regarded as arguably the show’s lowest point.
On the other side of the coin, Arrow‘s “Green Arrow & The Canaries” went down a storm with fans. With Stephen Amell wrapping up his tenure as Oliver Queen, the only one of the show’s 170 episodes that didn’t feature the leading man gave an indication of how the concept could be continued in the future, with Katherine McNamara’s Mia, Katie Cassidy’s Lauren and Juliana Harkavy’s Dinah comfortably taking center stage.

Green Arrow and the Canaries is no longer targeting a spot on The CW's schedule.
The network has passed over the series, which first aired as a backdoor pilot during Arrow Season 8.
The cast would have included Arrow vets Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy, and Juliana Harkavy, taking their characters to the 2040 timeline first introduced in the parent series.
In the backdoor pilot, Laurel Lance (Cassidy) arrived in the year 2040 to recruit fellow Canary Dinah Drake (Harkavy) and new Green Arrow Mia Smoak (McNamara) to fight a new threat.
Secretly, however, Laurel was also trying to stop Mia from bringing the city to its knees, which was foretold.
The special episode boasted 890,000 viewers and a 0.3 rating, which was higher than every Arrow episode during its final season aside from a crossover episode.
It's certainly surprising the show didn't get the green light because, when you think about it, the response to the spinoff was largely positive.

At long last, fans of the Arrowverse can watch almost all of The CW’s superhero shows on Netflix, though for newcomers, the 5 series and their 548 episodes won’t be so easy to get through.
I mean, even if we disregard the sheer amount of content that you’ll have to take on, the interconnectivity of the overarching narrative will make things more difficult. Now that all seasons of Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Black Lightning are available for streaming on Netflix, though, and since we’re in the middle of a global pandemic, this might be the perfect time to get into the Arrowverse or relive it all over again.
For starters, you’ll need to watch the first two seasons of Arrow. Though not to worry, as you’ll breeze through the 46 episodes that are, surprisingly, some of the show’s best. In the second...

In Arrowverse terms, we’re in the middle of a crisis on one Earth right now as the world tries to deal with the coronavirus outbreak. One thing we can all do to attempt to quell the pandemic though is wear a face mask in public. Unfortunately, this is something a lot of people are resisting, but if these folks won’t listen to experts, authority figures or common sense, then maybe they’ll listen to superheroes instead.
The CW has released a batch of promotional posters featuring nearly all of the Arrowverse’s leading vigilantes wearing face masks, each bearing the tagline: “Real heroes wear masks.” The seven posters star Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin), Kara Danvers/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), Sara Lance/White Canary (Caity Lotz), Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning (Cress Williams), Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl (Brec Bassinger) and Clark Kent/Superman (Tyler Hoechlin).

The CW has ordered two more pilots for the 2020-2021 season, including a second formal order for a series reboot of the 1987 film “The Lost Boys.”
The network had previously ordered a “Lost Boys” pilot last season before ultimately passing. The network remained high on the project, however, and decided to redevelop it. In the new version, when a mother and her Gen Z sons move to the seaside town where she grew up, they discover there’s a sinister reason the local cool kids sleep all day, party all night, never grow up and never get old. Family bonds are tested as the brothers find themselves on opposite sides of a mythological struggle.
None of the cast members from the first pilot are attached to the new version. Heather Mitchell and Rob Thomas are credited as writers and executive producers on the new pilot, with Marcos Siega attached to direct and executive produce.

The CW is getting ready for some new programming during the 2020-21 TV season, and has given pilot orders to The Republic of Sarah and a Kung-Fu reboot featuring female leads.
But there's also bad news about The Game revival which was recently announced as in-the-works.
The network has decided against ordering a pilot for the series, according to Deadline.
The Game's third chance at life was supposed to come in the form of a one-hour followup to the 2006 half-hour comedy and was coming from original creator Mara Brock Akil and Devon Gregory.
Deadline reports that the network was interested in developing the series with Akil, but she decided against going solo on the project because she and Gregory had already worked on her vision of what the new incarnation would look like.
The series was to move the action to a Baltimore setting and to mix new cast members with returning ones.

Arrow reached its series finale last night, bringing an end to the DC show’s monumental eight-season run. Fans seemed to really love the episode, titled “Fadeout,” as well, with many of its elements being praised. From the thrilling tease that John Diggle is going to become a Green Lantern to the emotional final scene between Oliver and Felicity. However, in the ratings department, things might not have been as impressive as The CW was hoping.
As per Variety, the finale drew a total of 723, 000 viewers, which marks a sizeable 20% drop off from last week’s penultimate episode. To be fair, this was the backdoor pilot for the upcoming spinoff Green Arrow and the Canaries, which – as we noted at the time – brought an upsurge in the ratings. The figures for “Fadeout” are pretty much in keeping with those of the rest of season 8, then, excepting “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 4,” of course.

Viewers have probably seen the last of Emergence.
Emergence Season 1 Episode 13 delivered 1.9 million total viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo.
That marks the show's least-viewed episode to date, and the series is ABC's lowest-rated freshman series.
Given the low ratings, the chances are slim that ABC will give the series another chance next season.
Elsewhere on ABC, The Conners (5.3 million/0.9 rating) was down a tenth, while Bless This Mess (3.4 million/0.6 rating), mixed-ish (2.3 million/0.5 rating) and black-ish (2.2 million/0.5 rating) were all steady.

The CW's Arrow came to a thrilling conclusion Tuesday night.
After 8 seasons of thrilling fight sequences, Oliver Queen's journey came full circle on Arrow Season 10 Episode 10.
While Queen's story came to a close, one of his closest allies, John Diggle (David Ramsey) may have started a superhero journey of his own.

Arrow Season 8 Episode 10
After eight seasons, and many earths, Oliver Queen has been laid to rest and Arrow is finally over. It can be difficult to stick the landing on something like that, especially after such a stellar final season. Unfortunately, after two deaths and a few memorials during Crisis on Infinite Earths, Arrow itself struggled to come up with much new to say about Oliver Queen’s legacy and the end of the show that started it all. While there will surely be fans who have a good solid cry over it or enjoy the allusion to Diggle as the Green Lantern, that feels woefully inadequate compared to the high standard season 8 has set.

Well, the day has finally come. Tonight, The CW airs the final ever episode of Arrow. Much has changed on the show over the past eight seasons, but someone who’s been there every step of the way – even if her character has changed drastically – is Katie Cassidy, who plays Laurel Lance Aka Black Canary.
Ahead of the series finale, the actress has taken to Twitter to thank all of the fans who have been watching the series for the best part of a decade. Alongside this, the star offered her own extended words about the “bittersweet” experience of saying goodbye to Arrow.

One of the most popular ideas in the Arrowverse, John Diggle’s transformation into a Green Lantern has never quite received an official confirmation. Diggle actor David Ramsey has addressed these rumors in the past, and it appears we came close to seeing them realized in “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” while earlier reports suggested that a Green Lantern series with Ramsey was pitched to The CW.
Although the latter idea is now unlikely due to the new Green Lantern show on HBO Max, of which we had a glimpse in “Crisis,” Ramsey has recently teased that we’ll be getting some answers over Diggle’s future in the Arrow finale this Tuesday. Responding to questions from TV Line about the Arrow conclusion, Ramsey had this to say about whether fans will be satisfied by the ending:
“Without a doubt. You are absolutely going to get your answers. And well-deserved answers.

Oliver Queen died in “Crisis on Infinite Earths” last week and the Arrow series finale is now quickly approaching, but yesterday we got a reprieve from all the sadness to have a glimpse at what’ll hopefully be an exciting future for the franchise. The penultimate episode of the Emerald Archer’s show acted as a backdoor pilot for Green Arrow and the Canaries, a sequel series set to star Katherine McNamara as Mia Queen, Oliver’s daughter, as she takes on her father’s mantle and protects Star City in the year 2040. Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy are also co-leads as the Black Canaries of the title.
The point of the episode was effectively for The CW to gauge if going ahead with the spinoff would be a good idea, as they’ve yet to officially greenlight it. Given the reaction on social media, though, it seems like this...

Last night, Arrow reached its second-to-last ever episode. But with Oliver Queen already having died in “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” it focused on his daughter, Mia Queen (Katherine McNamara), and the start of her partnership with the Black Canaries Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) and Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy). In short, it was a backdoor pilot for potential spinoff Green Arrow and the Canaries. We’ve yet to get the announcement that the sequel show is going ahead, but the shocking cliffhanger ending certainly set things up to be explored in a full series.
The episode began by focusing on the utopian future of Star City 2040, which is now in a much better state thanks to the post-“Crisis” reality reboot. However, some old problems started to resurface across the hour. First, a young woman named Bianca Bertinelli went missing, leading to Mia, Laurel and Dinah to suit up again to investigate.

Following yesterday’s penultimate episode, there’s just one hour left to go of Arrow before the Emerald Archer empties his quiver for good. Season 8’s ninth outing, a backdoor pilot for upcoming spinoff Green Arrow and the Canaries, ended with a brief promo teasing what’s to come in next week’s series finale. And, though it didn’t give much away, it does just enough to promise an emotional farewell to the father of the Arrowverse.
The 20-second preview opens with a tease for the hour-long documentary Hitting the Bullseye that will precede the finale, containing interviews with the cast and crew as they look back over the journey that Team Arrow has undertaken for these past eight years. The final 10 seconds then supply a burst of footage from the last episode, titled “Fadeout,” which leaves us with much to analyze.
A few clips, in particular, stand out.

In its penultimate episode ever, The CW’s Arrow planted a seed for the future on Tuesday with a spinoff pilot that teamed up 2020’s Laurel and Dinah with 2040’s Mia. If Green Arrow and the Canaries goes to series, would you tune in?
First things first: If you came away from this planted spinoff pilot a bit (or even a lot) confused, that is perfectly understandable, seeing as it actually takes place after the events of next week’s series finale. I repeat, the spinoff takes place after the events of next week’s series finale, which includes Oliver Queen’s funeral.

There was a lot on the line for this episode as it is intended to be the backdoor pilot for the new spinoff show, Green Arrow & the Canaries.
Did it succeed in planting the curiousity to check out the latest addition to the Arrowverse should it get a full series order?
Or did Arrow Season 8 Episode 9 fall flat with the high expectations set in place by its predecessor?
It is hard to make a spinoff of Arrow featuring a few of its main characters without making it feel like Arrow 2.0.
And, fortunately or unfortunately, it did. Even the person of the week that needed saving -- Bianca Bertinelli -- has ties to a character from Arrow.
That could be seen as a good thing because, in a way, Arrow's legacy will live on even after it ends.
On the other hand, if it is supposed to feel like its own show,...

Arrow Season 8 Episode 9
“Green Arrow & the Canaries” pulls off something pretty impressive in just an hour, managing to answer many questions about how the Crisis on Infinite Earths affected Arrow’s corner of the Arrowverse while the backdoor pilot gave the audience a sense of what the new show’s vibe would be and, perhaps most importantly of all, setting up a number of mysteries to make a spinoff feel like essential viewing.
So much is working here – Laurel’s antagonist-for-a-cause vibe, bringing in the Bertinelli family to keep things both young and new but steeped in Arrow’s lore, and the fun tone, the action sequences, and particularly the way exposition is layered into the episode with a relatively light touch. The Green Arrow is dead, long live the Green Arrow! Oliver Queen met his final end in last week’s conclusion to “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” but there must always be an Emerald Archer in the DC universe. And tonight we’ll see his daughter Mia pick up his bow and quiver in the penultimate episode of Arrow, which will act as a backdoor pilot for upcoming spinoff series Green Arrow and the Canaries.
Ahead of this key outing, star Katherine McNamara has now shared a sneak peek at her new costume on social media. The actress posted a selfie – seen below – in which she’s wearing a new mask, complete with accompanying green eye make-up. “New mask. Who dis?” McNamara wrote in her caption. “The legacy continues tonight,” she added, urging fans not to miss the beginning of the next chapter for the Queen family.

"Green Arrow and the Canaries" will serve as a backdoor pilot for the next big Arrow spinoff.
Crisis on Infinite Earths is over. There is now one single main Arrowverse world, known as Earth-Prime. Oliver Queen is dead. But his legacy will live on in the form of his daughter, Mia, and the women who have worn the mantle of Black Canary through the years, Laurel Lance and Dinah Drake. As Oliver said during Crisis "there should always be a Green Arrow," and he gave Mia the costume to make sure that happens.
Which brings us to Arrow season 8 episode 9, the penultimate episode of the series, with the appropriate title "Green Arrow and the Canaries." This episode will take a brief detour, picking up the action in the future of 2040 rather than in the days and weeks following the momentous events of Crisis. It's a standalone episode...

“Crisis on Infinite Earths” has been an exhilarating ride for DC fans, but it’s also somewhat bittersweet as it marks the end of an era. In a couple of weeks’ time, Arrow is coming to a close with the conclusion of its shortened eighth season. The ever-sprawling franchise that is the Arrowverse wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for the initial success of the Green Arrow’s solo show, so it was only fitting that “Crisis” climaxed with the death of Oliver Queen.
Following the airing of the two-part finale last night, star Stephen Amell took to Twitter to share a poignant message about why he decided to hang up his quiver for good. “8 seasons and an entire Universe seems like a pretty good time to step away.” Amell wrote. “What a ride.”

The two-part conclusion of “Crisis On Infinite Earths” is mere hours away (are you as excited as I am?), and the end of Arrow imminently after that, but the Arrowverse is still looking beyond the conclusion of its flagship progenitor with the release of an assortment of new photos for Green Arrow and the Canaries.
Prominently featuring Mia, Laurel and Dinah, the images show our trio of lady heroes looking badass in their hero costumes and elegant out of them, indicating that the mix of gloom and style that made Arrow so visually distinctive will remain alive and well in its spinoff. Crucially, they show that the Laurel and Dinah who will appear in the series are their present-day incarnations rather than the fifty-something versions of the characters seen in the 2040 future, meaning that more time travel will be utilized to kick off the series and possible paradoxes to avoid...

Today was a good day for Arrowverse fans, as The CW has officially renewed all five of its ongoing DC TV series for another year. So, given that Arrow is ending this month, that’s The Flash (for a seventh season), Supergirl (sixth season), Legends of Tomorrow (sixth season), Black Lightning (fourth season) and Batwoman (second season). However, some less good news has also come to light, as it’s possible that this will be the final run for “some” of these shows.
Insider Daniel Rpk shared the renewal news on Twitter, adding the warning: “For some of them it’ll likely be the end.” Meanwhile, CinematicBanter shared similar information, citing a few shows that may be close to cancellation, which you can see below:

After having been teased about it for some time and forced to come up with our own speculation and assumptions, the official synopsis for Green Arrow and the Canaries has finally been revealed.
In case you somehow missed it, the spinoff series of Arrow will take place in 2040 and follow the vigilante exploits of Oliver and Felicity’s daughter Mia (Katherine McNamara), joined by Black Canaries Dinah (Juliana Harkavy) and Laurel (Katie Cassidy). Before it begins though there’s still the small matter of the climactic two parts of “Crisis On Infinite Earths,” where we’ll see exactly how the Anti-Monitor will be defeated and the multiverse restored.
After normal service is resumed, Mia and her friends will return to their own time and find the city they left to no longer be a dystopian hellscape, allowing them some semblance of peace after the trials they’ve endured. However, happiness generally makes for boring television,...

It’s somewhat difficult to believe that Supergirl has been entertaining us for five whole seasons now. After all, there’ve been so many whispers of its supposedly impending cancellation throughout the years that it seems like the show is always one bad episode away from getting pulled off the air. A little show called Arrow premiered on The CW on October 10th, 2012.
It was the year that Marvel released the monster of a film that was The Avengers, which could only mean that superheroes were stepping into the forefront of the content coming out of Hollywood.
While DC Comics ventured out into the big screen in 2013 with Man of Steel, the small screen is where they hit their stride.
It was the beginning of Peak TV and DC's best chance of leaving behind a legacy similar to what Marvel seemed to be paving for themselves was to jump onboard with the premiere of Arrow on primetime.
So what was it that set the Green Arrow apart from the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, and even Batman?

Crisis On Infinite Earths Part Two complicated the major characters death in Part One. What does this mean moving forward?
Warning: This Crisis on Infinite Earths article contains Major spoilers for Part One.
The first episode of Crisis on Infinite Earths ended with a showstopper: Oliver Queen’s death. While we’ve known it was coming since last year’s Elseworlds crossover, the end of the first of five crossover episodes was a far earlier point than expected to lose the hero who started the entire Arrowverse. The Arrowverse is one of the most ambitions undertakings in TV, spanning six shows that taken as a whole appear to be a meticulously constructed shared universe of complementary mythologies gradually built up according to some grand plan. However, Arrow creators Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim have now revealed that the whole thing was actually an accident.
The pair were interviewed by Entertainment Weekly ahead of “Crisis On Infinite Earths,” in which Berlanti states that despite people’s belief in the sprawling saga having been carefully planned out, “each step was a surprise.” Guggenheim continued by expanding on the point, stating: “If I had to pick one word, I’d say ‘unbelievable,’” referring to the shared universe’s very existence and its associated crossovers, before going on to say that the seemingly organic expansion of the universe’s scope “really speaks to my whole philosophy about building a universe. Arrow might be finishing very soon, but that won’t be the end for this corner of the Arrowverse. “Our last day of filming #Arrow & here we are @willaholland the #Og ‘s ….” she wrote. “I adore you little lady!”

Arrow may be ending with its eighth season, but the legacy of the Emerald Archer will continue in the spinoff series titled Green Arrow and the Canaries. The female-led show will star Katherine McNamara as Mia Smoak, Oliver Queen and Felicity’s grown-up daughter, as well as Black Canaries Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy Rodgers) and Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy). Up until now, though, the exact setting of the series has not been revealed.
Today, however, we’ve finally had it confirmed that Green Arrow and the Canaries will take place in Star City 2040 rather than the present. Arrow Ep Marc Guggenheim unveiled the news on Twitter in response to a fan asking him about the mechanics of how the spinoff will be set up in season 8.

The original Laurel Lance is returning for this winter’s Arrowverse crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” For the first four seasons of Arrow, Katie Cassidy played Earth-1’s Laurel, Da, former girlfriend of Oliver Queen and eventual Black Canary. After she was killed by Damien Darhk, however, Cassidy returned to the cast in season 5 as Laurel’s evil Earth-2 doppelganger, who’s slowly gone down the path to redemption. Now, Laurel 1.0 is coming back.
This news was confirmed by Arrow Ep Marc Guggenheim on Twitter. When a fan asked him to tease something about Laurel’s involvement in “Crisis” as well as her role in the upcoming spinoff Green Arrow and the Canaries, the producer clarified: “Earth-1 Laurel in Crisis. Earth-2 Laurel in spin-off.”

Work on Arrow season 8 just completed which means that the long-running CW DC TV show has finished for good. While fans have still got a couple of months left before the series disappears from our screens, it’s already feeling like the end as the cast and crew have been sharing their own heartfelt and nostalgic messages on social media to mark the monumental occasion. Like Stephen Amell, for example.
To begin with, though, Ep Marc Guggenheim shared a letter directed at those who’ve helped create Arrow over the past eight years, reminding us all just how incredible an achievement the show is and how much it’s changed the landscape of superhero television.

Heading up to Vancouver for the last time for #Arrow.

Production on Arrow season 8 has now wrapped, which means the cast and crew have said goodbye to the Emerald Archer’s solo show for the last time. Much of what the series finale contains is still under wraps, but social media posts from those involved have given us a lot of teases at what’s to come in Oliver Queen’s final hour. Today, for instance, we learned the nature of the episode’s last bit of dialogue.
A few hours ago, Arrow Ep Marc Guggenheim shared the following tweet: ‘#Arrow is wrapped. Last two words of dialogue: “To you.”‘ Cue fans furiously trying to figure out what these words mean.
Whatever it may be, they clearly have an additional thematic resonance. Though Arrow will close the book on Stephen Amell’s time as a DC superhero, the mythos will continue in Green Arrow and the Canaries, the upcoming female-led...
