- After revealing about a curse to King Shantanu, Ganga leaves with their eighth son, Devavrat. He finds two newborns and names them as Kripa and Kripi. 16 years later, Ganga returns with Devavrat.
- Bound by his promise, Shantanu does not question Ganga as she sacrifices seven sons. Shantanu could do nothing other than grieve the death of his sons at the hands of his own wife, the queen. Ganga is not murdering the sons, she is immersing them in the water as offerings after a prayer.
The 8th son is born and Ganga again proceeds to the river to immerse him in the water. Shantanu sees her this time and runs after her. When he protests at the birth of their eighth son, Ganga reminds Shantanu of his promise & leaves with Shantanu's eighth son. Shantanu says he was propelled to ask Ganga due to his duties as a King & as a father. He asks Ganga as to why she has murdered his 7 sons.
Before leaving Ganga reveals that in a previous birth, she was Ganga the daughter of Brahma and Shantanu was Raja MahaBhishak. Indra was their common friend. At one of Indra's parties, Mahabhishak stared at Ganga as her choli flew away in the wind, when all other people bowed in her presence to protect her modesty. Bhrahma is angry (that Mahabhishak transgressed the boundaries of decency and Ganga participated in the act) and curses both to take birth as Mortals on Earth. When Shantanu stopped Ganga, she was released from the curse and now it is time for her to leave him.
The 8 sons were Vasus, who were cursed by Rishi Vashishtha to take birth on Earth. Ganga promised them to give them birth and then release them from their curse by killing them instantly. But the 8th vasu now has to live his life on Earth. She takes the son away with her as she immerses herself in the river Ganga
Shantanu adopts abandoned Rishi kids Kripa and Kripi (whom he found under a tree). He hands them over to his Rajguru for their rearing. Rajguru says that this is part of a larger universal scheme that none of them can predict at this moment. God wanted Shantanu to adopt these kids and so he has. Shantanu is a mere instrument of God.
Shantanu misses Ganga dearly and goes to the river often to be close to her. 16 Years later the son is returned, trained and educated as Prince Devarata (Mukesh Khanna). Shantanu notices Devarata when he single handedly stops the flow of the river Ganga with only the precise flow and position of his arrows. Devarata was able to dam the river with his arrows. Shantanu brings his weapons to dismantle the dam, when Ganga appears.
Ganga says that Devarata has been trained and is fully capable to being the heir to Shantanu's throne at Hastinapur. Ganga leaves again after handing over custody of Devarata to Shantanu. Devarata is a devoted son, who looks after his father's every need. They bond over philosophy and games (Chausar).
Davarata proves that he is intelligent when he tames a wild horse by hiding its shadow from him (which was scaring him). When Devarata takes the horse for a ride, he finds Shalva army moving towards Hastinapur. Devarata stops the army single handedly.
