Kunti worries about the battle to be fought between her sons, Karna and the Kaurav brothers. She is worried about how she would face Gandhari during and after the war, if anything was to happen to Duryodhan. Vidur tells them that Bhishma is the commander-in-chief of the Kauravas army and he wonders how the Pandavas will be able to face him in battle. Kunti has nightmares about Arjun and Karna killing each other in battle.
Kunti visits Karna and tells him the truth about his birth. Kunti says that Karna is her eldest son. Karna refuses to accept her as his mother, as his mother is Radha. Karna says that Kunti has only come to meet him now as she has a hidden motive. She has come at a time, just after his daily prayers, when he cannot refuse anything to anyone. He is duty bound to fulfill their wish. And even now Kunti has met him in secret, thus she is not willing to let the world know that she is indeed his mother. He knows that Kunti has come as a shield to Arjun.
Karna also adds that Kunti knew from the day of the special stadium assembly, that he was her son, yet she never stopped Bheem and Arjun from insulting him. She never acknowledged Karna as her eldest son and the eldest Pandava. She has only come today as war is on the horizon and Kunti want the safety of her five Pandava sons.
Karna tells her he already knows the truth, and he is happy to have his natural mother by his side. Kunti pleads with him to join the Pandavas as their eldest brother and not fight them in the oncoming war, but he says, "I must fight with Arjun. I cannot abandon my promise to Duryodhan.". He has to repay his debts to Duryodhan, who accepted Karna as his friend without knowing that he was the eldest Pandava. Duryodhan is counting on Karna to fight against the Pandavas and it is not possible for Karna to abandon him at this moment.
Kunti wants Karna not to kill the Pandavas. Karna cannot promise this, but also cannot let Kunti go empty handed. Karna promises that Kunti will have 5 sons alive at the end of the war. He would not attack anyone except Arjun in the battlefield. But out of Karna and Arjun, only one will survive.
