Five Inspirations is a series in which we ask directors to share five things that shaped and informed their work. The series Love Me, Click Me: Films by Eugene Kotlyarenko is now showing in most countries. The mini-retrospective of my work currently showing on Mubi has allowed me to reflect on the early days of my filmmaking journey and the people and work that inspired me along the way.Inspiration #1Directing the Film: Film Directors on Their Art (1976) by Eric ShermanDirecting the Film was a book my brother got me on my 13th birthday. Comprised of interviews with seminal directors, it's organized according to the filmmaking process. My key takeaway was that there's no right or wrong way to make a movie. Artists figure out their own path and methods. I've returned to it many times over the years.Inspiration #2Working with Agnès VardaA few months after I moved out to LA,...

Read More: SXSW: Indie Maverick Kate Lyn Sheil on Going Big With 'House of Cards' & Making Movies with Exes On Wednesday, October 28, Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg, Brooklyn hosted the official premiere of Eugene Kotlyarenko's "A Wonderful Cloud," a weird and charming story of a man trying to connect with his ex-girlfriend Katelyn (played by Kotlyarenko and Kate Lyn Sheil, respectively, who happen to be exes in real life) over a weekend in La. In a whirlwind hour and 20 minutes, the pair bounce around the city, interacting with all the idiosyncratic characters that make up the La landscape, from a psychic who swipes a lint roller across Katelyn's face to a slimy fashion designer who insists she's "the next big thing." "A Wonderful Cloud" is a deeply personal tale executed in a film that is stylish and funny, and it also makes important observations about communication and relationships in the digital age.

The quirky comedy, which premiered earlier this year at SXSW, stars Kate Lyn Sheil as Katelyn, who travels to Los Angeles to try and take control of a clothing company run by her ex-boyfriend Eugene, played by Kotlyarenko himself. The above exclusive trailer provides a brief look into the strange and oftentimes confusing L.A. that Katelyn and Eugene navigate, gaining a better understanding of themselves, each other and what they want out of life. With a completely improvised script, the film promises to take a raw, honest look into relationships and how sometimes it's possible to find love even after heartbreak. In a half empty hotel ballroom in Austin last week, Brian Schuster — a porn entrepreneur giving a lecture on the future of the adult industry — introduced the concept of “the social singularity,” the idea that the difference between our networked relationships and our Irl ones will eventually become indistinguishable. With texts, tweets, Skype, and FaceTime, we’re already getting pretty close to that futuristic premise, something a lot of films still struggle to incorporate into their storytelling. But two of the best films this year at SXSW, Ben Dickinson’s Creative Control and Eugene Kotlyarenko’s A Wonderful Cloud, updated familiar […]...

From the first shot of Eugene Kotlyarenko's wonderful SXSW feature, A Wonderful Cloud, you see that he's a man with few boundaries. Utilizing Irl footage from his 2010 relationship with co-star Kate Lyn Sheil, he starts his narrative from a place of documentary and extrapolates from there. Few relationship dramas from contemporaries have struck me as deeply as this one and few conversations have been as immediate and enjoyable as the one we had Tuesday afternoon. Over our 30 minutes together we spoke about how a delightfully accented financier was so moved by the climax of the pitch that he wrote a check right then and there, why more "cool kids" don't make movies, and how a visit to an aura reader inspired my favorite...

[Indiewire's Springboard column profiles up-and-comers who are deserving of your attention.] Boundaries are meant to be broken in "She's Lost Control," the remarkably sure-footed debut from writer-director Anja Marquardt. Centering on a psychology grad student (Brooke Bloom) working as a sex surrogate in New York, the film appropriately opens with the eradication of the fourth wall: "I know you pay me for my time, but you can't control how I feel," Ronah (Bloom) says, her big eyes gazing directly into the camera. By the time we circle back to the conversation in full, it's revealed that she's addressing Johnny (Marc Menchaca), a particularly guarded and volatile client who threatens to tip the balance of Ronah's personal and professional life. People in L.A. are weird. That's my first impression of Eugene Kotlyarenko's "A Wonderful Cloud," a movie based in eccentric Los Angeles, where "first impressions are everything." That's a quote from one of a dozen or so colorful supporting characters who make sure that it's at least an entertaining kind of weird, elevating the film well beyond its central meta fixation on the film's director (playing an exaggerated version of himself) and Katelyn (Kate Lyn Sheil, whom you'll immediately recognize as Lisa from "House of Cards"). The two were a couple in real life, and Kotlyarenko had already documented the fallout of their relationship in his Skype film "Skydiver," so he's clearly holding on to something dear from their relationship. It's commendable that he's funneling these feelings through creative means in a quasi-fictitious feature where most of the dialogue is completely improvised, real people portray parodic versions of themselves,...

[Indiewire's Springboard column profiles up-and-comers who are deserving of your attention.] Eugene Kotlyarenko isn't one to let vanity get in the way of a good visual gag. In his SXSW Visions entry "A Wonderful Cloud," his hilarious follow-up to his little-seen debut "0s and 1s," the writer-director-actor first appears on screen with his sweaty face in between a woman's thighs; later during an extended sequence, he sits on the toilet taking a dump while trying to plan the night with his disgusted ex-girlfriend (played by Kotlyarenko's own ex-girlfriend Kate Lyn Sheil). It's that no-holds-barred approach to letting it all hang out that lends his sophomore feature its zany energy and bruised heart. The story of "A Wonderful Cloud" centers on Kate (Sheil) who travels to Los Angeles in hopes of wrestling control of a clothing company from her ex, Eugene (Kotlyarenko). Unable to deny their emotional past, the mismatched pair spend the...

The Diy legend created the Black Flag logo and set the look for American punk and Indie culture of the 80s and 90s. In interviews, actress Kate Lyn Sheil can come across as quiet and a bit shy. But make no mistake about it -- Sheil is driven as hell. How else to account for her spectacular rise as an indie darling over the past several years and her recent brush with fame thanks to a supporting role on the second and third seasons of "House of Cards"? Since coming out of nowhere in Alex Ross Perry's 2001 breakout indie "The Color Wheel" (her first feature project), Sheil has gone on to become a go-to actress for other budding indie auteurs including Joe Swanberg, Ti West, Adam Wingard, Rick Alverson and Amy Seimetz. She can currently be seen at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival in two projects: the short "Kiss Kiss Fingerbang" and the Visions entry "A Wonderful Cloud," directed by and co-starring a former boyfriend of hers, Eugene Kotlyarenko ("0s & 1s"). Coming up,...

South by Southwest starts tomorrow, Friday, March 13, and my pores are beaming with excitement, though that could just be a medical condition. I am looking at a very packed schedule of films over the nine day festival, with a total of 38 in all (36 reviews to write). So, I basically will be drowning in movies. But, then again, I can't complain too much, as I wouldn't have it any other way. You can take a look at what I hope my schedule ends up being below. Obviously, things could change as the festival progresses, with some titles getting more buzz than others and overtaking current films and so forth. But, I think, this is how I will be spending my SXSW. I will be updating this post throughout the festival with schedule changes and links to my reviews, so maybe bookmark this page if you're interested. I hope you enjoy my coverage,...

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.
