During the ambush, the archers' rate to shoot is too fast. Crossbows required both hands or sometimes a stirrup to load, and even the most skilled men could not fire more than one or two darts per minute.
It is highly unlikely that experienced Viking warriors would camp in a valley where they would be ambushed.
