In an attack by the terrorist militia Al-Shabaab on a military base in Somalia and a subsequent firefight, 18 people have been killed, according to army figures. There were five soldiers and 13 of the attackers died, said a spokesman for the military. The extremists had initially detonated a car bomb in front of the base near the southern Somali port town of Merka. Al-Shabaab has been controlling large parts of central and southern Somalia for years. The Sunni fundamentalists, who have ties to the Al Qaeda terrorist network, are fighting for supremacy in the country in the Horn of Africa.
