- Sensing labor, Honoria has Frances send for the father, captain James Hawdon, who drinks at the Three Cripples, so he will fetch and pay for a doctor, but receiving the letter James sees only it's from Frances and burns it unwittingly. Amelia removes her ring and forbid Compeyson being granted entry to Satis House. Sikes acts more possessive of Nancy. Frances insisting the child is a stain on the family name, Honoria wonders at her spitefulness; Frances confesses her fiance ended their engagement because she was not as "vivacious" as her 'always favored' sister, even Sir Leicester prefers Honoria. Honoria replies "I loved you most," adding she will name the child, if a girl, "Esther Frances". Reconciled, the sisters welcome a girl into the household but the premature baby stops breathing. Honoria, self-abasing, is grief-stricken and shattered James didn't come. Frances places the body in a basket in a cupboard downstairs, but hears the baby come alive with a cry; amazed, she decides against telling Honoria, instead stooping to tend to the girl herself.—KGF Vissers
